PETER FELIX GETS SECOND CHANCE

Peter Felix (6-6) becomes the first Heavyweight to battle back to the upper division with a UD10 over Jack Malloy (3-12-1) on 09-05-1903.

Felix went (6-1) on the club circuit and spent 2 full years there almost to the date.

The middleweights who battled back were both pretty good fighters, however, I feel Felix will make a return trip to the club ranks. But this is boxing so you never know.

EGAN GETS SECOND CHANCE

Dick Egan (7-7) became the second HW in the month to get another shot at the upper level with a TKO5 over LHW Jack Stewart (1-7-1) on 9-26-1903.

Egan won all five of his club fights and spent a mere 14 months on the club circuit.

On the same card, Stanley Ketchel moved to 5-0(5) and will move to pre-prime for his next fight. At the end of the year he will move to the upper level.

JOHNSON RETAINS TITLE WITH UNINSPIRED PERFORMANCE

Jack Johnson (14-1) turned in a lackluster performance but still managed a UD15 over #8 Larry Foley (7-3-1). It was a very close fight with no knockdowns and only one cut over Foley's left eye. Johnson ran away with it by winning the last 4 rounds.

I had it 145-140. Tom Trunzo ringside had it 144-141. The official judges had it 143-142/145-140/145-140.

It was Johnson's 3rd title defense and he will end the year as the champion.

On the undercard

HW - Sam McVey UD10 Dominic McCaffrey (McCaffrey came into the fight ranked #1)
HW - John J. Dwyer DRAW John Haines
HW - Denver Ed Smith KO10 Denver Ed Martin
LHW - John P. Clow UD10 Morris Heffey (Clow stepping up in weight for the win)*
MW - Johnny McGlade UD10 Geoffrey Thorne

* I'm putting in a new rule into LBA rules. If a fighter steps up in weight and wins there is a 10% chance he stays at that division. It increases by 10% with every win. Clow will not move to the LHW division.

IN WHAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A TUNE-UP

Jack Root (15-3) defended his LHW title for the 4th time on 10-08-1903 with a UD15 over UR Dan Dwyer (3-6). It wasn't as easy as Root had thought it would be.

Dwyer scored a flash knockdown and then hung around through 10 rounds. Superior conditioning took over and Root won the last 5 rounds fairly easily. Dwyer only suffered a small cut under his right eye in the 6th.

I had it 146-140. Scott Lang ringside had it 146-141. The official judges had it 147-140/145-141/146/141.

Root will finish the year as the LBA Lightheavyweight champ.

On the undercard

LW - Dick Burge UD10 Young Otto
HW - William Miller TKO9 Gus Ruhlin
LHW - Leo Houck DRAW Fred Cooley (shocker considering it was a 9 rated vs 1 rated match)
HW - Jim Flynn KO4 Joe Hess (Flynn remains unbeaten as a beginner)
WW - Jimmy Mitchell UD10 Billy Gardner (Mitchell stepping up to WW for this club fight win)

Only upper level fights will be included in the chance to move up in weight rule from the previous post.

MCGOVERN AVENGES LONE BANTAMWEIGHT LOSE

Terry McGovern (15-2) avenged his lone Bantamweight loss in his 3rd title defense with a KO13 over #9 Chappie Moran (7-10-1). McGovern's only other loss came to Harry Lyons in a Featherweight fight.

McGovern lost to Moran back on 7-29-1900 in a TKO5 which was stopped because of a bad gash over Terry's right eye. McGovern punished Moran this time. Moran was cut over the right eye, under the left eye, and his right eye was swelling shut. McGovern dropped Moran once in the 11th and then for good in the 13th.

McGovern will end 1903 as the Bantamweight champ.

On the undercard

HW- Sam Langford KO7 Jem Stewart
HW - Jimmy Elliot UD10 John Ferguson
LW- Billy Whistler UD10 Harlem Tommy Murphy ( Whistler moved up to LW for the win but will stay at FW)
MW - Kid Carter UD6 Jim Brady (Carter won a beginner club fight)
FW - Thomas Palmer TKO2 Torpedo Billy Murphy (Palmer moved up to FW for this club fight win)

GANS BOXES HIS WAY TO REVENGE

The long running thorn in Joe Gans (13-1-1) was Jack Blackburn (10-2-3). Blackburn handed Gans his only loss before Gans won the title and then fought to a draw in Gans first title defense.

This time Gans wanted nothing to do with it, he dominated the fight with defense from the word go. He made Blackburn miss then countered with combinations. He made Blackburn miss with every thing Jack tried.

He even dropped Blackburn with a counter left hook in the 15th.

Gans landed 39.9% of his punches to Blackburn's 23.9.

I had it 147-137. George Thorn ringside had it 146-138. The official judges had it 146-140/146-138/146-138.

It was Gans 5th defense of the Title.

On the undercard

BW - Billy Plimmer UD10 Tommy Kelly
HW - MIke Schreck UD10 Billy Wilson (Wilson dropped to the club ranks after the fight)
Mw - Jack Burke UD10 Dick Sandall
HW - Jim Daly DQ3 Jack Stelzner (club fight)
HW - Tompkin Gilbert UD10 Jim Miles (club fight)

RYAN WINS FOUL PLAGUED TITLE DEFENSE

Tommy Ryan (16-0) won his 3rd title defense with a UD15 over Joe Walcott (6-6-3). It was an ugly foul-plagued fight with both fighters recieving numerous point deductions. Without a stat to back it up I recall numerous of Walcott's loses being due to point deductions.

The fight was close for the first 5 rounds. Ryan took over then and only lost one more round the rest of the way. He was penalized in the 7th and 13th. Walcott was penalized in the 5th, 9th, and 13th. Walcott was also dropped for a 9 count in the 14th round.

I had it 145-135. Jim Trunzo ringside had it 146-134. The official judges had it 145-135/144-136/145-135.

On the undercard

HW - John Haines KO8 Joe Goddard
MW - Jack Dempsey UD10 Edward Rollins (Rollins will drop to the club ranks)
LW - Harry Gilmore TKO3 Kid Farmer
MW - Bill Slavin UD6 Dick Moore (more still a begginer and looking like he'll never get out of the club ranks at 0-4 )
LW - Charles McCarthy KO5 Kid McPartland (club fight)

MCAULIFFE DESTROYS MEYER

A fight between the #1 and #2 lightweight contenders, both undefeated ended with a 2nd round KO.

Jack McAuliffe (15-0-1) swarmed Billy Meyer (12-1-1) in the 2nd round finally dropping him with under :30 seconds remaining.

McAuliffe has started taunting Gans claiming Gans is avoiding him. I'd say after this fight Gans should avoid him.

FUNNY THING ABOUT TUNE-UP FIGHTS

Jimmy Briggs (2-2) shocked the LBA world with a TKO7 over champion Abe Attell (12-4-1).

Attell was cruising to an easy victory winning 5 out of the first 6 rounds. Briggs was bleeding from the nose and a cut over his left eye. In the 7th Briggs connected with a huge left hook that opened a bad gash over Attell's right eye and the after calling a time-out to have the doctor look at it, referee William Connors called the fight. Chaos ensued in the ring with Briggs' corner celebrating and Attell's protesting.

The LBA commission will meet to decide if there will be a mandatory rematch.

On the undercard

HW - Tom Sharkey UD10 George Godfrey
WW - Paddy Duffy UD10 Patsy Sweeney (Sweeney moving up for the loss)
FW - Young Corbett KO1 Billy Barrett
HW - Jack Malloy TKO5 Tug Wilson (club fight)
BW - Thomas Palmer UD 10 Joe Bowker (club fight)

FITZSIMMONS CONTINUES TO DOMINATE

Bob Fitzsimmons (14-0) won by KO3 over #11 Dan Creedon (7-6) on 12-7-1903. Back in 1901 Fitz took a close UD10 over Creedon so people had hopes for this fight being close. Creedon came out swinging in the first and won the round big. Fitz came out for round two with a mouse under his right eye and dropped Creedon halfway through the round.

Creedon survived the onslaught that followed, but clearly was hurt as he stumbled back to his corner. Fitz wasted no time in the 3rd dropping Creedon twice in the first minute and Creedon stayed down the 2nd time.

For Fitzsimmons, this was his 5th title defense and he stated after the fight that he would stick around the middleweight division for a little bit longer.

On the undercard

MW - Frank Glover KO3 Honey Mellody (Mellody moved up to MW for the loss)
WW - Willie Lewis UD10 Dixie Kid
BW - Joe Wagner UD10 Tommy Feltz (Feltz will drop to the club ranks after this loss)
HW - Jim Miles SD6 Bill Doherty (Doherty still a beginner)
LW - Jimmy Mitchell UD10 Mike Daly

MCAULIFFE DISQUALIFIED

December 22, 1903

Less than a month after destroying Billy Meyer, Jack McAuliffe (15-1-1) was disqualified in the second round against featherweight Billy Whistler (2-4-1). Reports are hazy (because I simmed the bout) but it appears the fight was stopped due to several low blows.

Gans was reached for a statement and laughed at the thought of facing McAuliffe now. "He can't get past a blown up featherweight and he wants me to make him rich. Talk to me again in a year."

* LBA ruled that the stoppage of the Briggs-Attell fight was just and will not intervene or order a rematch. Esp. since they didn't order a rematch when Attell fought to a draw with Corbett. The LBA dislikes intervening and only will in extreme cases, such as Gans - Blackburn.
