Official scoring errors (earned runs, RBIs)
**League file is uploaded (1978 replay.lg.zip)**
This area has made nice strides over the years, but there are still a few scoring errors that require fixing. APRIL 9 Baltimore at Milwaukee TOP OF THE 1ST Baltimore Orioles batting - Pitching for Milwaukee Brewers : LHP Jerry Augustine Pitching: LHP Jerry Augustine Batting: LHB Pat H Kelly 2-2: DOUBLE (Flyball, 89D, EV 103.8 MPH) Batting: SHB Ken Singleton 2-2: Ground out 1-3 (Groundball, 13, EV 85.6 MPH) Pat H Kelly to third Batting: SHB Eddie Murray 1-0: Reached on error, E6 (Groundball, 6MD, EV 92.5 MPH) Pat H Kelly scores This seems to be a pretty common one. Happens with a runner on third and less than two out on a mishandled ground ball to an infielder. Murray was credited with an RBI on this booted ground ball, which is probably correct and would be fine if the run had been earned against Augustine. However, the run was said to be unearned. It is impossible for both things to be true, given the construction of this inning. If the 3D replay is to be believed (and I understand that the 3D model is only trying to recreate the results the game engine has generated and is not an authoritative representation of what actually "happened"), the infield was playing back and the runner at 3rd broke on contact. This would support crediting Murray with an RBI and Augustine with an earned run. Milwaukee committed no other errors or passed balls in the game and Augustine's line read 2R, 1ER. Batting: RHB Doug DeCinces 3-2: Fly out, F8 (Flyball, 8RXD, EV 88.8 MPH) Batting: RHB Lee May 1-2: Ground out 1-3 (Groundball, 34S, EV 77.5 MPH) Top of the 1st over - 1 run, 1 hit, 1 error, 1 left on base; Baltimore 1 - Milwaukee 0 |

Houston at Cincinnati TOP OF THE 1ST Houston Astros batting - Pitching for Cincinnati Reds : RHP Tom Seaver Pitching: RHP Tom Seaver Batting: RHB Cesar Cedeno 2-1: Fly out, F8 (Flyball, 8LM, EV 78.8 MPH) Batting: RHB Enos Cabell 2-2: Strikes out looking Batting: LHB Jose Cruz 3-0: Base on Balls Batting: RHB Bob Watson 0-0: Ball Jose Cruz steals 2nd base 2-2: Single, Error in OF, E7, batter to second base (Groundball, 56D, EV 105.0 MPH) Jose Cruz scores Watson was given an RBI and yet the run was called unearned against Seaver. Either 1) the run would have scored on the single to left despite the error by the left fielder (RBI, earned run) or 2) the runner would have held at third and only scored because of the error (no RBI, no earned run). The Reds made one other error and had a passed ball, but neither event caused any other unearned runs. Seaver finished with 4R, 3 ER. Batting: RHB Art Howe 2-0: Fly out, F9 (Flyball, 89M, EV 91.9 MPH) Top of the 1st over - 1 run, 1 hit, 1 error, 1 left on base; Houston 1 - Cincinnati 0 |

Houston at Cincinnati BOTTOM OF THE 1ST Cincinnati Reds batting - Pitching for Houston Astros : RHP Tom Dixon Pitching: RHP Tom Dixon Batting: RHB Dave Concepcion 3-2: Base on Balls Batting: LHB Ken Griffey Sr 1-1: Ball Dave Concepcion steals 2nd, throwing error, E2 Dave Concepcion to third 3-2: Ground out 4-3 (Groundball, 4, EV 85.6 MPH) Dave Concepcion scores Concepcion would have been on second without the error. He then would move to third on the ground ball to second base by Griffey and remain there as the inning ended with Foster's strikeout and Bench's grounder to short. However, Dixon was charged with an earned run here, incorrectly. Batting: RHB George Foster 1-2: Strikes out swinging Batting: RHB Johnny Bench 1-1: Ground out 6-3 (Groundball, 6, EV 82.5 MPH) Bottom of the 1st over - 1 run, 0 hits, 1 error, 0 left on base; Houston 1 - Cincinnati 1 |

Chicago(N) at New York(N) TOP OF THE 7TH Chicago Cubs batting - Pitching for New York Mets : RHP Craig Swan Batting: RHB Larry Cox 3-2: SINGLE (Groundball, 4MD, EV 100.6 MPH) Batting: RHB Rick Reuschel 2-1: Sac Bunt to 3S - play at first, batter OUT! 3-4 Larry Cox to second Batting: RHB Ivan de Jesus 1-0: SINGLE (Line Drive, 7S, EV 93.8 MPH) Larry Cox to third Batting: LHB Bobby Murcer 0-0: Reached on error, E8 (Flyball, 8LM, EV 85.0 MPH) Larry Cox scores Ivan de Jesus to second Interesting scenario here. Center fielder drops Murcer's medium-depth fly ball with one out. Larry Cox, the runner at third, scores. The game credits Murcer with an RBI but says the run is unearned. Again, the OOTP official scorer can't have this both ways. If the runner would have tagged up and been able to score, Murcer should be credited with a sacrifice fly (despite the error) and an RBI (he was given an RBI but no sac fly and was charged with an at-bat). Calling this a sacrifice fly would also make the run earned against Swan. Batting: LHB Bill Buckner 1-1: Fielders Choice at 2nd, 3-6 (Groundball, 34, EV 86.3 MPH) Ivan de Jesus to third Batting: RHB Dave Kingman 3-2: Base on Balls Bill Buckner to second Batting: SHB Joe Wallis 0-0: Ground out U3 (Groundball, 34D, EV 83.8 MPH) Top of the 7th over - 1 run, 2 hits, 1 error, 3 left on base; Chicago 2 - New York 0 |

Chicago(A) at New York(A) TOP OF THE 1ST Chicago White Sox batting - Pitching for New York Yankees : LHP Ron Guidry Pitching: LHP Ron Guidry Batting: RHB Alan Bannister 2-0: Ground out 6-3 (Groundball, 6D, EV 103.1 MPH) Batting: RHB Lamar Johnson 2-1: SINGLE (Line Drive, 6D, EV 105.0 MPH) Batting: RHB Chet Lemon 2-1: Reaches on Catchers interference Lamar Johnson to second Pretty easy one. Lemon reaches via catcher's interference and then comes home on Bonds' dinger. OOTP says Lemon's run is earned against Guidry. It isn't. Just BTW, Louisiana Lightning getting rocked here! Four in the first, including two dongs (he only gave up 14 HRs in 282.2 innings in this simmed season). But, fear not, Yankees fans. Guidry put up zeroes in the following six innings and his team walked off with the win on a Bucky Dent single in the 10th. Batting: RHB Bobby Bonds 0-1: 3-RUN HOME RUN (Line Drive, 7LD, EV 102.5 MPH), Distance : 365 ft Batting: LHB Jorge Orta 2-0: SOLO HOME RUN (Flyball, 9LD, EV 108.1 MPH), Distance : 357 ft Batting: RHB Eric Soderholm 1-0: Ground out 2-3 (Groundball, 2R, EV 62.5 MPH) Batting: LHB Ralph Garr 3-1: SINGLE (Line Drive, 6D, EV 97.5 MPH) Batting: RHB Wayne Nordhagen 0-0: Fly out, F9 (Flyball, 89M, EV 90.6 MPH) Top of the 1st over - 4 runs, 4 hits, 1 error, 1 left on base; Chicago 4 - New York 0 |

Milwaukee at Baltimore TOP OF THE 2ND Milwaukee Brewers batting - Pitching for Baltimore Orioles : LHP Mike Flanagan Batting: RHB Gorman Thomas 3-2: Base on Balls Batting: LHB Cecil Cooper 3-2: Strikes out swinging Batting: RHB Sixto Lezcano 3-2: Strikes out swinging Batting: RHB Sal Bando 2-1: SINGLE (Groundball, 34D, EV 103.1 MPH) Gorman Thomas to second Runner from 2nd tries for 3rd, SAFE, throw by RF made to third Batting: RHB Don Money 1-0: Swinging Strike Passed Ball! Gorman Thomas scores Sal Bando to second 3-2: Ground out 4-3 (Groundball, 4S, EV 88.1 MPH) Another easy one. Thomas is at third base and scores on a passed ball. Money then grounds to second to end the inning. OOTP charges an earned run to Flanagan. It's an unearned run. Top of the 2nd over - 1 run, 1 hit, 0 errors, 1 left on base; Milwaukee 1 - Baltimore 2 |

I just encountered a different type of scoring error. I had a batter credited with a walk-off double with the bases loaded in a tie game. By rule in this situation the batter can only be credited with the number of bases required to score the winning run. The PbP described a hit that would in almost any other circumstance result in a double, but in this scenario, the most that would be allowed would be a single as the game winning run scored from third with the batter only needing to advance to first. The only exception to this is a batted ball that results an award of 4 bases (i.e. an over the fence HR).

Switching leagues here. This example comes from my fictional league:
TOP OF THE 9TH Chicago Captains batting - Pitching for Detroit Industrials : RHP Erik Budka Pinch Hitting: LHB Cory Weatherhead 3-2: Base on Balls Batting: LHB Eduardo Sanchez 2-0: SINGLE (Line Drive, 9S, EV 105.0 MPH) Cory Weatherhead to second Batting: LHB Russell Barbour 2-2: Reached on error, E6 (Groundball, 6, EV 81.9 MPH) Cory Weatherhead to third Eduardo Sanchez to second Batting: SHB Jose Duran 1-2: SINGLE (Groundball, 34D, EV 106.9 MPH) Cory Weatherhead scores Eduardo Sanchez to third Russell Barbour to second Batting: LHB Efrain Mere 1-1: GRAND SLAM HOME RUN (Flyball, 9D, EV 99.4 MPH), Distance : 417 ft Pitching: RHP Greg Wayman Batting: RHB Jeff Hatch 2-1: DOUBLE (Line Drive, 78XD, EV 110.6 MPH) Batting: SHB Alex Ramirez 1-0: Ground out 4-3 (Groundball, 4, EV 103.1 MPH) Jeff Hatch to third Batting: RHB Matthew Johnson 1-2: Fly out, F9 (Flyball, 9D, EV 90.6 MPH) Runner from 3rd tags up, SCORES, no throw by RF The issue here occurs with the second pitcher of the inning, Greg Wayman. Earlier in the inning, with Budka on the mound, Barbour reached on an error and later scored on Mere's grand slam. The Barbour run was correctly categorized as unearned against Budka. Following the grand slam, Wayman entered with the bases empty and allowed a double to Hatch, who later scored on Johnson's sacrifice fly. OOTP classified the run as unearned against Wayman, which is incorrect. While Johnson's fly ball would have been the third out of the inning had the error not occurred, that error took place with Budka on the mound, not Wayman. Therefore, while the run that scored off of Wayman is unearned against the TEAM, it is earned against Wayman, because he is not able to "benefit" in an earned-run sense from misplays that happened in the inning prior to his taking the mound. Batting: LHB Antonio Sarango 1-0: SINGLE (Line Drive, 8RS, EV 96.9 MPH) Batting: LHB Cory Weatherhead 0-2: Ball Antonio Sarango steals 2nd base (no throw) 1-2: Fly out, F7 (Flyball, 7S, EV 81.9 MPH) Top of the 9th over - 6 runs, 5 hits, 1 error, 1 left on base; Chicago 10 - Detroit 7 |

BOTTOM OF THE 8TH
Los Angeles Surf batting - Pitching for Denver Explorers : RHP Jim Feick Batting: RHB Mario Sommer 0-0: SOLO HOME RUN (Flyball, 7D, EV 101.9 MPH), Distance : 369 ft Batting: RHB Bryan Wilcox 0-0: SINGLE (Line Drive, 6MD, EV 103.8 MPH) Batting: RHB Miguel Mendoza 1-2: Fly out, F7 (Line Drive, 7, EV 103.8 MPH) Batting: RHB Mathias Gardini 1-0: DOUBLE (Groundball, 3L, EV 103.8 MPH) Bryan Wilcox to third Bryan Wilcox scores Batting: LHB Marcos Franco 3-2: Base on Balls Pinch Hitting: RHB Justin Woods 1-0: Fly out, F8 (Flyball, 89XD, EV 107.5 MPH) Runner from 2nd tags up, SAFE at 3rd, no throw by CF Batting: LHB Carlos Suarez 1-0: Ball Pickoff Throw by Catcher to First - Error! E2 Mathias Gardini scores Marcos Franco to second 2-1: Fly out, F9 (Line Drive, 9, EV 95.0 MPH) Catcher tries to pick off the runner at first and throws it away, allowing the runner at third to score. The run was incorrectly classified as earned. Bottom of the 8th over - 3 runs, 3 hits, 1 error, 1 left on base; Denver 2 - Los Angeles 7 |

TOP OF THE 4TH Detroit Industrials batting - Pitching for Seattle Sounders : RHP Ken Godfrey Batting: RHB Steven Carter 2-2: SINGLE (Line Drive, 56D, EV 96.9 MPH) Batting: RHB Noah Marshburn Pickoff Throw to First - Error! E1 Steven Carter to second 0-1: Ground out 5-3 (Groundball, 56S, EV 68.8 MPH) Steven Carter to third Let's follow Carter's path around the bases had the error not occurred on the pickoff attempt: He most likely would advance to second on the weakly-hit ground ball to the left side by Marshburn; probably unlikely that he would tag at second and advance to third on the line drive to medium-depth right field by Scott, though, even if he did, he is left at third base when Almenza grounds out. So, even in the most optimistic of reconstructions, Carter gets no further than third base in this inning. Despite that, OOTP scored his run as earned. Batting: RHB Curt Scott 0-1: Fly out, F9 (Line Drive, 9, EV 99.4 MPH) Runner from 3rd tags up, SCORES, throw by RF Batting: RHB Octavio Almenza 2-0: Ground out 5-3 (Groundball, 56, EV 80.6 MPH) Top of the 4th over - 1 run, 1 hit, 1 error, 0 left on base; Detroit 1 - Seattle 1 |

BOTTOM OF THE 8TH Dallas Derricks batting - Pitching for Houston Barons : LHP Mike Brandewie Pinch Hitting: LHB Mike Cruz 0-0: Reached on error, E6 (Groundball, 4M, EV 89.4 MPH) Pinch Hitting: LHB Josh Staiert 3-2: Fielders Choice at 2nd, 4-6 (Groundball, 4, EV 91.9 MPH) Batting: SHB Carlos Gonzalez 0-0: 2-RUN HOME RUN (Flyball, 7LD, EV 96.9 MPH), Distance : 353 ft Cruz reaches on the error, but is then erased on a fielder's choice ground ball to second off the bat of Staiert. So, does this mean that Staiert, when he scores on the home run by Gonzalez, carries home an earned run? No. Despite the fact that he did not reach on an error, Staiert wouldn't have reached at all had the error not occurred on the Cruz ground ball. Reconstructing the inning, Staiert's grounder to second would have been the second out and left Dallas with two outs and no runners on base. So, in effect, Staiert takes the place of Cruz as the runner who should not have reached base. Therefore, Staiert's run is unearned. It was incorrectly scored by the game. Batting: RHB Jose Marrero 3-2: SOLO HOME RUN (Flyball, 7LD, EV 100.6 MPH), Distance : 372 ft Pitching: RHP Cesar Rivera Batting: LHB Carlos Salazar 0-0: Ground out U3 (Groundball, 3, EV 105.6 MPH) Batting: RHB Ben Moore 3-1: Fly out, F8 (Flyball, 8RD, EV 90.0 MPH) Bottom of the 8th over - 3 runs, 2 hits, 1 error, 0 left on base; Houston 11 - Dallas 3 |

TOP OF THE 1ST San Francisco Sandpipers batting - Pitching for St. Louis River Runners : RHP Juan Osuna Batting: SHB Jason Flynn 2-1: DOUBLE (Groundball, 5L, EV 109.4 MPH) Batting: LHB Salvatore Cervantes 0-1: Fly out, F8 (Flyball, 8LXD, EV 105.0 MPH) Runner from 2nd tags up, SAFE at 3rd, no throw by CF Batting: LHB Ali Bullock 3-0: Base on Balls Batting: LHB Juan Baroz 1-0: Fly out, F7 (Flyball, 7D, EV 88.1 MPH) Throwing error, E7 Jason Flynn scores Ali Bullock to second Batting: SHB Aaron Todd 0-1: SINGLE (Groundball, 6D, EV 96.3 MPH) Ali Bullock to third Runner from 3rd tries for Home, SAFE, no throw by LF With runners on first and third and one out, Baroz flies to deep left. Flynn tags and scores while the left fielder throws wildly to the plate in a futile attempt to cut him down. Because Baroz was credited with a sacrifice fly (as he should have been), the error accounts for Bullock's advancement from first to second on the play. Todd follows with a ground single to center which drives home Bullock from second. But, minus the error, Bullock would still be on first and would not advance three bases on a grounder to center field. So, with Bullock on third base (at best), Beltran strands him there with his fly ball to right. Bullock's run is therefore unearned against Osuna. OOTP assessed it as an earned run. Batting: RHB Manny Beltran 0-0: Fly out, F9 (Flyball, 9, EV 83.8 MPH) Top of the 1st over - 2 runs, 2 hits, 1 error, 1 left on base; San Francisco 2 - St. Louis 0 |
