The Pirates signed free agent RP Hi West to a 1-year contract worth a total of $830.

In the bottom of the third, Downey led off with an inside-the-park home run.

The Pirates signed free agent 3B Rabbit Robinson to a minor league contract.

The Detroit Tigers traded C Oscar Stanage and 1B Del Gainer to the Chicago White Sox for RP Fred Olmstead.

In the bottom of the second, Egan put the Reds on the board with an RBI single. One out later, Downey got his own RBI single. Paskert came up with a two-out RBI single. A walk to Lobert loaded the bases with two out. Hoblitzell could not add to the big inning, however, as he flew to left to retire the side.

In the top of the third, Barbeau scored from second when Downey made a throwing error after fielding an Abstein grounder. One out later, Clarke brought Abstein home with a single.

In the bottom of the third, Egan picked up another RBI single.

After three: Cincinnati 4 Pittsburgh 2.

In the top of the fifth, Leach tied the game with a two-out two-run double. Miller then singled to score Leach and give the Pirates the lead.

In the top of the sixth, Barbeau led off with a double but injured his knee sliding into second and had to leave the game. Ed Abbaticchio came in to run for Barbeau and would be thrown out at home by Paskert after tagging up at third and trying to score on a Willis fly ball.

In the bottom of the sixth, Paskert tied the game with a two-out RBI triple.

After six: Pittsburgh 5 Cincinnati 5.

In the bottom of the ninth, with the winning run at first and one out, Mitchell grounded into the 4-6-3 and the game went into extra innings.

After nine: Pittsburgh 5 Cincinnati 5.

In the bottom of the tenth, with the winning run at first and two out, Downey popped up to the catcher and the game continued.

In the top of the eleventh, the Pirates loaded the bases with one out. Clarke brought the go-ahead run home with an infield single. Harry Gaspar took the mound for the Reds and got Wilson to ground into the 5-2 fielder's choice for the second out. Wagner then flew to right to retire the side.

In the bottom of the eleventh, Chick Brandon took the mound for the Pirates. With runners at first and second and two out, Mitchell flew to left to end the game.

The two teams combined for 25 hits in the game. The Reds also committed four errors.

Today is the second game in the series in Chicago between the Pirates and the Cubs. The Pirates last four game have each been decided by a single run.

The Pirates placed 3B William Barbeau on the 60-day injured list. He will miss 5-6 months with a fractured knee.

In the top of the first, Clarke scored from first on a combination of a Wagner single and a Shaw throwing error. Leach followed with a single to score Wagner. Leach would later leave the game with a foot injury after being thrown out advancing from first to third on a Miller single. He would be replaced by Ward Miller.

In the bottom of the third, with a runner on first, Ellis tied the game with an inside-the-park home run. Hulswitt gave the Cardinals the lead with a two-out two-run double. Hulswitt went on to score on a wild pitch. Only one of the runs was earned.

In the top of the fifth, Wilson scored from second on a Dots Miller single combined with a Shaw error. Ward Miller scored from third when Gibson grounded to short and it was a one-run game.

In the top of the sixth, Clarke scored the tying run from first on a Wilson two-out single combined with a Shaw throwing error. It was Shaw's third error of the game. With runners at first and second and two out, Irv Higginbotham took the mound for the Cardinals and got the final out of the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Konetchy put the Cardinals back in the lead with a two-out RBI single. Shaw followed with his own RBI single. With runners at first and second and two out, Lefty Leifield took the mound for the Pirates and got out of the inning.

In the top of the seventh, an RBI triple by Abstein made it a one-run game.

In the bottom of the seventh, Chick Brandon took the mound for the Pirates.
