farm system

I'm inquiring about your experience from you veterens, now when it comes to your farm system and say you see a player with 1, maybe 2 stars is there really any chance that he can improve beyond what is being predicted? or the the goal just to make him a utility player? do you even give those guys much attention or should i just focus on the 4-5 star players in the minors

Quick answers (others may have longer answers) --

1. Stars are not the be-all-and-end-all of rating your players. (There are 3- and 4-star players in my current sim that I would never trade for, for example.)

2. Yes, those 1- and 2-star guys can become worthwhile contributors, but that's really on a case by case basis. Most probably will not, but some can. Often if you have a guy with high "intangibles" (intelligence & work ethic are good ones), he can "grow" into much more than you originally drafted. Sometimes, however, even their low-minors growth spurts will only make them into, say, AA or AAA players.

3. So cast a wider net than those high-star guys. Pay some attention to who's playing where on the farm: yes you want your future stars to pan out, but you need an entire lineup, and it's cheaper to grow one than to buy one. So move guys around the infield to create utility players. Get your LF to play RF too (and vice versa).

Hope this helps some.

Yes
Treat your minor league teams like real teams, if you have the time and are so inclined. It's good prqctice for your major league team and sometimes you can learn some good tricks to apply.

Sometimes you even start to like your minor league teams better than your big league team
