What If thread

Just recently bought the game. I've been doing some what if scenarios and seeing how they would have played out until the present time.

The first scenario I did was what if Mark Messier stayed in NY in 97 instead of Vancouver. Here are some highlights.

Messier plays until 04-05 albeit at a 2nd line pace.

In 97-98 The Devils win the Stanley Cup but Marty Brodeur bolts that summer to join the expansion Nashville Predators. That same summer Eric Lindros bolts from the Flyers for Chicago, and Jagr leaves the Pens for Tampa. This results in Mario Lemieux coming out of retirement 2 years early and leading the Pens to a cup in 99. Philly wins one in 2000 (I guess Lindros didn't mean ****), while the Pens win again in 01. After that its the Red Wings and Avs dominating until 05 when the league starts to change. Crosby winds up in Montreal, while Ovechkin winds up in Atlanta/Winnipeg.

Champions from this scenario

Champions

98-99- Pittsburgh
99-00-Philadelphia

07-08-Calgary
08-09- Ny Rangers

12-13-Phoenix
13-14- Ottawa
14-15- Montreal
15-16- Edmonton
16-17-Nashville
17-18 -Arizona

The next scenario I did was what if the trade never happens in 88 and Wayne Gretzky stays in Edmonton. Here are some highlights,

Gretzky scores over 3000 pts and the Oilers remain an elite team into the mid 90s, however they only win 1 more cup in 1990 just like in real life. Expansion and players declining eventually derail them.

Mario Lemieux plays all the way to 2006 and wins 4 cups with the Pens the Pens Oilers finals battles in the early 90s are epic. Mario surpasses Gretzky in goals but not points.

The St.Louis Blues win 3 cups as do the Vancouver Canucks. All 4 late 90s expansion teams also win multiple cups. The Toronto Maple Leafs also win 2 in this timeline.

Sidney Crosby plays for 4 teams jumping whenever he becomes a ufa.

The New York Rangers break their curse not in 1994 but in 1999. The longest drought now belongs to the Detroit Red Wings who still haven't won since 1955. Steve Yzerman,Joe Sakic, and Ray Bourque all retire cupless.
