Johanssen wins historic first game

Karl Peters, GSN correspondant
April 4th, 2015

The Johanssen Suns put the giddy home crowd in an even more jubilant mood after beating the Grytviken Icebergs in the season opener at South Georgia National Stadium. Second Baseman Dean White won player of the game plaudits for Johanssen. He went 3-for-4 with 2 home runs. He scored 3 times and drove in 5. Aguo Grangeman got the win, jumping to 1-0. He worked 6 innings, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits, while striking out 6 and walking none.

Uinsin Dlugolecki aided the Johanssen cause with a 2-run double in the bottom of the sixth. For the game, the designated hitter went 1-for-4 with a double, while adding 2 RBI.

Dlugolecki called the win "a collective effort."

WEEK 2 PREVIEW

This week's featured Friday Night game : "Survival of the fittest"
Port Smith Aces (4-3) at Barrington Pintails (4-3)

AT

Dominic Fry, GSN correspondant
April 10th, 2015

It seems like a few of the teams did most of the losing in the first week of the SGBL. Port Charles, Batallion and (shockingly) Grytviken combine for a 2-19 record between them, meanwhile the rest of the SGBL has been feasting on their carcasses so far.

Sitting at 4-3 and tied in the South Division, you would expect things to be fairly evenly-matched between Port Smith and Barrington. However, one team expected to have won more than this so far, while most people expected the other to be much deeper in the standings.

Port Smith
When the Aces selected Irish pitching phenom Lonergan Hobbs as their first round selection, second overall, many felt Port Smith had the best player on the island. In his first two starts for the team, he backed up that opinion: recording a 2-0 record in 2 starts, 17 K's, and no walks. However, for a baseball team to be successful, they cannot rely on one player. Hobbs only pitches every five days, so other members of the team need to step up. Thankfully for him, the Aces also have the best Bullpen in the league. The one-two closing combo of Setup Man Maake Perelini and Closer Matthew Collinson has been too overwhelming for most teams to overcome.

Statistically, the team's offense has not been the greatest. They can score a few runs, but it has really been a pitching-dependant team. All four of their wins have happened thanks to allowing 3 or less runs each time. As soon as the opposition scored 4 or more runs, they lost.

Pitching tonight for the Aces is #3 starter Freddie Stewart. Another Irishman on the team, he is a master of pitching speed. His fastball is a modest 90 mph, but he can throw a baffling array of off-speed pitches to get your timing off.

Barrington
Barrington shouldn't be this good. Really. They are also pitching-reliant, except their pitching is average, and their offence thoroughly sucks. On the surface, there is no reason why they should be 4-3. Despite having one of the worst teams in the league at the plate, they came through when it mattered and won 4 of their first 7 games. These wins were not freebies by any stretch, and all four of them were one-run wins. Unless told otherwise, Barrington could be a mirage after the first week. They would need to beef up in order to contend.

The best offensive player on the team is 1B Cortez Juarez, who kept the boat afloat, but might not have enough to steer it forward.

Pitching tonight is the team's #5 starter Beau Lynch, who was rattled for 7 ER in 7 innings last outing. The 28-year-old is a similar pitcher to Stewart, with his off-speed stuff as his force.

Wouldn't it be something if the Pintails could claw ahead? Still, the collective gut feeling is that the Aces will prevail. Tune in to GSN for all the live "Friday Night Baseball" action!

Who would have thought
Both pitchers go the distance, Lynch pitches a masterpiece for Barrington

Dominic Fry, GSN correspondant
April 11th, 2015

Well, well, well.
I'll take some ketchup with that crow.

The light-hitting Barrington Pintails pulled it off again. No small part thanks to pitcher Beau Lynch, who kept Port Smith to just 4 hits and 2 runs in a complete game victory.

Once again, the Pintails offense didn't exactly assert themselves. For most of the game, Port Smith had taken care of them. It took 6 innings before a single run was scored. However, Barrington made that 6th inning count.

Nicoll doubled, Butler grounded out but Nicoll got to third. The Aces then preferred to intentionally walk slugger Lamar Donald trying to avoid a home run, but Juarez then singled to score Nicoll anyway. The nightmare inning for Stewart kept going for a few more batters until Niculescu cranked a 3-run home run to give the Pintails a 4-0 lead.

Port Smith was able to reply with a 2-run home run by Nile Chapman the very next inning, but that was as close as they could get. Both pitchers were solid. Stewart (Port Smith) despite the loss did well. 6 K's, 2 walks in a complete game loss. Lynch (Barrington) meanwhile, had his best stuff going. He struck out 8 Aces, walked no one, and other than Chapman's home run, he basically shut down a respectable Aces offense.

Final score : Barrington 4, Port Smith 2.

Not surprisingly, Beau Lynch was named player of the game.

WEEK 3 PREVIEW

This week's featured Friday Night game : "The rise of the Tough Guy Towns"
Annenkov Vikings (7-6) at Salvesen Aeros (10-3)

AT

Karl Peters, GSN correspondant
April 17th, 2015

Life doesn't get much more rugged than living in either Annenkov, the mountainside mining town, or the harsh, wind-swept western port of Salvesen. Those that decide to live there are tough, and live a no-nonsense lifestyle.

On opening day, when the Annenkov Vikings took to the field, there was a warm and fuzzy billboard, written by fans, in the stand.

It read : "Blood. Anything less, and we don't want to hear it"

What a lovely bunch.

However, Annenkovians expressed their fandom in another way : by selling out all Viking games so far. The comparatively small South Georgian city set out maximizing their team's capacity to get funding for these tough-minded players. This is hard-earned money. Those dollars spent at the ballpark were earned slugging for coal, or mineral samples in the tough Normann Mines.

Much the same is true in Salvesen : SGI's westernmost town. Swept by howling wind and housing a seaport cursed with brutal weather and high seas, not to mention a volatile windy airport, the town is equally as tough.

Annenkov

Backing the Vikings are it's pitching staff. Annenkov posesses the best starting rotation in the SGBL so far, anchored by 31-year-old Zak Evans. He is a well-balanced pitcher with some great breaking balls to keep hitters off-balance. So far this season, he has compiled an 0.81 WHIP and a 1.69 ERA in two starts (one complete game). The team's young closer Doyle Lagala has been equally as effective. Offensively, most of the team's grunt has come from their RF Bear Kent, or Venezualan 2B Willie Hernandez, who have combined for 5 HR and 12 RBI in a dozen games.

Evans, the team's best pitcher, takes the mound tonight.

Salvesen

Contrary to Annenkov's philosophy, the Salvesen method is pure offense. They lead the league so far in runs scored (94), batting average (.311), on-base percentage (.384) and home runs (19).

Their heart of the order includes the young slugger Meto Christiansen, a left-fielder, and their supremely talented catcher Coy Blazer, who was a first-round selection by Salvesen in the inaugural draft.

Pitching has been relatively secondary for the Aeros, and pitching for them tonight is Vic Aulet. A calm, cerebral pitcher with several pitches at his disposal. Not a world-beater, but he is a tough-nosed competitor who lasted a complete game in both his starts so far. He brings a 4.50 ERA, 7 BB and 12 K's to the table.

Salvesen's offense has propelled them to the top of the SGBL with a 10-3 record, but Annenkov could have just the antidote to the Aeros' high-flying ways.

However this game ends, it will be a hard-fought game... on the field and (most likely) in the stands.

Week 3 Showcase Review

A wild win by the SGBL's 'Wild West'
Salvesen catcher Coy Blazer reminds SGBL why he was picked in 1st round

Annenkov pitcher John Sarich

Karl Peters, GSN correspondant
April 17th, 2015

A packed crowd was on hand in Salvesen to watch this week's featured game, which was also broadcasted live on GSN. Both in-person and television fans were treated to a thriller.

The game started with the visiting Annenkov Vikings initiating total chaos on pitcher Vic Aulet. The top of the 1st was punctuated with a walk, two singles and a triple, which was enough to place Annenkov ahead 3-0 on the scoreboard.

The Aeros needed someone to step up, and they certainly got it. Catcher Coy Blazer drove in Sigurd Neumann in the bottom half of the inning to make it 3-1, then in his next at-bat he drove in John Madsen to make it 3-2 in the 3rd, then a single next time up drove in Madsen again in the 5th to tie the game 3-3.

Blazer was due up again in the 7th, and surely his night would slow down... but he did it again! A single to shallow left scored Meto Christiansen for his 4th RBI in 4 at-bats. The hit was part of a big 7th inning for Salvesen, which gave them a 7-3 lead.

Believe it or not, that healthy lead did not last for long.

Annenkov finally fought back in the top of the 8th, pummeling a tiring Vic Aulet, who was still on the mound for the Aeros. Bear Kent cranked a two-run home run, and the two Willies (Perez and Hernandez) combined for another run scored before Aeros Manager Frederick Jensen finally gave Aulet the rest of the evening off. Despite the new pitcher, Annenkov tacked on another run in the inning to complete the comeback. It was now a 7-7 tie in the middle of the 8th inning.

It all boiled down to the bottom of the 9th.

On the mound for the Vikings was young fireballer Ross Richardson. A 25-year-old with a loaded cannon for a left arm, but still trying to control that power... and he would face Salvesen's top of the order.

Leading off the bottom of the 9th was Aaron Atkinson, who fouled off a string of Richardson's fastballs, and finally hit a single after forcing him to throw some of his sliders. Madsen popped out, then Christiansen also singled, and then walked Coy Blazer (there he is again!) to load the bases with only one out.

Then, the 41 year old switch-hitter "Old Man" Finlay Kerrigan came up to bat. All he had to do was make contact and the game was theirs. He obliged by popping up, and Atkinson tagged up for the winning run.

A hard-fought game which also garnered the highest ratings in GSN's short history. Truly a memorable finish!

Final score : Annenkov 7, Salvesen 8

The player of the game was a lock : Coy Blazer was given the nod, and deservedly so! He went 3-for-4 with 1 walk, and 4 RBI's.

Life has a habit of getting in the way of OOTP doesn't it But i suppose that's one of the great things about doing a dynasty report: you can do it at whatever pace you're able to. We're not going anywhere, anyways

WEEK 4 PREVIEW

This week's featured Friday Night game : "Stuck in quicksand"
Batallion Royals (4-16) at Grytviken Icebergs (6-14)

AT

Dominic Fry, GSN correspondant
April 24th, 2015

For two of South Georgia's larger cities with (theoretically) more resources, they certainly made a mess of their first month in the league. Both teams have been guilty of going for the "star" player to boost marketability for ticket sales, rather than build an entire team.

In the inaugural draft, Grytviken selected pitcher Taka Buchannon, and he became the focus of the team's promotional material. On paper, he is one of the best pitchers on the island, but this has not translated to results so far. On one hand, he has struck out batters at an impressive pace (36 K's in 5 starts), but he also allows hits and runs, and only holds an ERA of 5.88.

On top of that, Buchannon only pitches every 5th day. The rest of the week, the pitching staff's "great unwashed" are in the spotlight, and things have been desperate. The Icebergs have the SGBL's worst starting rotation. This week, all five starters had an ERA over 5.50 to their name. On the other side of things, their run production has also been lacking. In eight of the team's games so far, they were limited to scoring 2 runs or less (all of them losses, of course). The team started the year by losing 12 of their first 14 games.

Two days ago, in order to inject a new face in the team's struggling rotation, the team removed Taylor Trimble from the active roster, and replaced him with 23-year-old Bailey Williams, who impressed in 3 starts for the minor-league Grytviken AAA Blue Sox.

Bailey Williams will make his major-league debut tonight.

Meanwhile, Batallion's situation equally as bad.

They banked on Catcher (and Batallion native) Oskar Sorenson to be their star. He was selected in the first round of the inaugural draft, and Oskar appeared on most of the team's pre-season advertising and in team press releases.

A few weeks before the season, the team began a #BelieveInOskar social media campaign, to draw attention to the team. It worked, and the season opener at Queen Elizabeth II Park was sold out. However, the team's lack of competitiveness quickly became apparent, and attendance has since faded.

Perhaps owing to nerves from being thrust in the spotlight, Sorenson has struggled. Although he can draw the occasional walk, he is batting only .215 at the moment, and has produced almost nothing offensively. It is possible that the pre-season media pressure (or the snowball effect of a bad start to the year) left most of the team in a slump. The team is currently near the bottom in every major statistical category, whether it is offensive, defensive, or pitching.

To add to the drama (at least from an outside perspective) has been the hot-headedness of Batallion's Manager Magnus Hansen. Over the first few games, he has been... shall we say... 'animated'. His loud, no-nonsense style has been seriously tested in April. So much so, in fact, that the team and media gave him the nickname "Earl", referring to Earl Weaver, the legendary but wild and short-tempered Manager of the Baltimore Orioles from the late-1960s to the mid-1980s.

Depending on how he channels his passion, Manager Hansen might be helping or hindering the team's current slide. Time will tell if GM Fred Zagula will intervene.

On the mound tonight for Batallion will be Dylan McGregor.

This game will be an interesting game to watch from a human perspective. Which group will be able to pull themselves together for a win and start a glimmer of hope, and which one will sink further in the quicksand?

The game will be aired live on GSN on Friday night, don't miss it!
