We have decided to let Fernando Mexicano play with his injury. He has a shot at 30 HR and a .300 BA. The worst that could happen is he gets hurt and misses the rest of the season, which he would miss anyway with his current injury, if we sat him. The odds of him getting an injury that would last into next season seem remote enough to risk. If this was early in the season, we would definitely sit him.

Melvin Rodarte has been pronounced sound and will play today, but Dave Risinger will start the rest of the games at short this season.

We are in Seattle to play a 4 game series, the penultimate series of the season and our final road games. The Rainiers split 4 games in San Francisco over the weekend. We are 5-5 against them on the year and won 2 of 3 here in our first trip to Seattle at the end of June. They are 9th in scoring in the PCL with 4.19 runs per game (Portland is not last! We are 15th with 3.84). The Rainiers are 11th in fewest runs allowed with 4.49 per game (Portland is still 8th with 4.35).

Portland Beavers (65-90 .419 25 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West) at
Seattle Rainiers (75-80 .484 15 GB in 7th place in the PCL West)

POR: Ricardo Gil (22-R 9-6 3.49) Rookie vs. SEA: Doug Carter (34-L 2-5 3.78)

Gil was roughed up for 7 runs in 3.1 IP last time out and took the loss.

One of Carter's 2 wins is against us. We scored 2 runs in 5.2 IP.

We are back home to play our final three games of the season against the Sacramento Solons. They ended their home schedule by losing two of three to Hollywood and have lost five of their last six, the same as us, though we have lost 5 in a row and they won their last game. We are 7-4 against them on the season and lost two games to them the last time they were in Portland. This will be an epic battle to decide who has the worst offense in the PCL. Right now we are both tied for last with 3.83 runs per game (610). Their OPS is 12 points higher than ours, but we have hit 35 more home runs (116 to 81). They are 4th in fewest runs allowed with 3.93 per game (625) (Portland is down to 9th with 4.40 (700)).

Sacramento Solons (77-82 .484 14 GB in 7th place in the PCL West) at

Top of the First:

Eddie Dyer works a full count walk... He steals 2nd. Dale Cave grounds out to 3rd and Dyer moves up a base. Larry Pierce lines a hit to center and Dyer scores. 1 to 0, Solons. Jim Holberton flies out to left. Les Olds strikes out.

Bottom of the First:
Brian Mitchell gets beaned. Gilberto Valdez pops out to 2nd. Shannon Kuchta bounces a 3-2 pitch to left center for a hit. We pull off a double steal! That was an essential stratagem! Actually, a useless risk as Glenn Snowden swings at a 3-2 pitch and hits a home run to left center!!! 3 to 1, Beavers! Fernando Mexicano lines out to center. Don Neumann jerks a home run down the right field line! 4 to 1, Beavers! Dave Risinger swings at a 3-2 pitch after the catcher already had it gloved....

Bottom of the Third:
Gilberto Valdez lines a hit to center. With 1 out, Glenn Snowden tries to ground into a 6-4-3 double play, but Angel Arana makes a bad throw to 2nd and they get no one out. With 2 outs, Don Neumann bloops a hit to left center and Valdez scores! 5 to 1, Beavers! That does it for P Darrell Williams. New Pitcher: Pat Hoskins (34-R) with an 0.00 ERA in 4.2 IP. Only 1 H, 0 BB and 3 SO. Dave Risinger grounds out to 3rd.

Top of the Seventh:
Angel Arana reaches on a 2 base throwing error by SS Dave Risinger. Bill Ambrose lines a hit to left. The Bullpen is up. PH Tom Gill (25-L), batting .314 with a HR in 35 AB, lines one to the right side. 1B Glenn Snowden makes a diving catch and then throws to 3rd to double off Arana! Eddie Dyer lines a hit to right. Dale Cave grounds out to the pitcher! But when he comes in to the dugout, P Steve Muir goes to see Trudy the Trainer...

Top of the Eighth:

New Pitcher: John Cox (28-L). With 1 out, Jim Holberton grounds a hit up the middle. Call to the Bullpen: Wade Ellis (25-R). We will be the only team in Baseball that failed to draw a million fans this season.

Top of the First:
Eddie Dyer strikes out! Harvey Turner grounds out to short. Larry Pierce flies out to center! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:

Brian Mitchell grounds out to short. Gilberto Valdez doubles down the right field line. Shannon Kuchta grounds out to short. Glenn Snowden takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Fernando Mexicano swings at a 3-2 pitch and strikes out...

Top of the Fourth:
With 1 out, Jim Holberton hits a home run to right center, 452 feet... 1 to 0, Solons.

Bottom of the Fourth:
Fernando Mexicano leads off with a home run to right center! His does not go as far as Holberton's, but it counts the same! Tie Game: 1 to 1.

Top of the Sixth:
Eddie Dyer leads off with a single. We get the Bullpen stirring. Harvey Turner bunts the runner up. Larry Pierce strikes out! 2 outs. We walk Jim Holberton intentionally, which for once makes sense to me. Les Olds pops one up to short, but Dave Risinger drops the ball and the bases are loaded. Mario Vasquez flares a hit down the left field line and 2 runs score.... 3 to 1, Solons. Boyd Wassink walks to load the bases back up... We stick with P Ricardo Gil, because I want to give him a chance to get 10 wins.... Angel Arana flies out to right.

Bottom of the Sixth:
With 1 out, Don Neumann triples to right. Dave Risinger beats out an infield hit and Neumann scores. 3 to 2, Solons. PH Kurt Cunning (30-R) grounds out to 2nd and Risinger goes to 2nd. 2 outs. 2B Jim Holberton made an awesome play on that ball. PH Melvin Rodarte (32-L) strikes out...

Bottom of the Eighth:
Don Neumann leads off with a hit and Dave Risinger bunts him to 2nd. PH Jack Hinckley (25-R) grounds a hit to left and Neumann scores! Tie Game: 3 to 3. PH Marcell Amici (31-R) is sent up. Yes, we are scraping the bottom of the barrel... Hinckley steals 2nd. Amici pops out to short. They walk Brian Mitchell intentionally to face Gilberto Valdez. That is interesting; they must think Mitchell is a pretty good hitter. Valdez walks unintentionally and the bases are loaded for Shannon Kuchta. They make a pitching change. New Pitcher: Ken Powell (30-R) with a 2.54 ERA, but 31 BB in 49.2 IP. Can Shannon be patient? Probably not... But maybe so!! He walks on 4 pitches to force in the go ahead run!!! 4 to 3, Beavers! Glenn Snowden swings at a 3-2 pitch and pops out to left...

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: David Fuentes (25-R), our leader in saves, but who has two losses in his last two appearances. Jack Hinckley stays in to play center and Brian Mitchell moves to right. Marcell Amici stays in to catch. Angel Arana grounds out to the pitcher. PH Dennis Rayner (27-R), batting .269 with 4 HR in 350 AB, swings at the first pitch and flies out to right! Eddie Dyer strikes out and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!

LF Don Neumann had 2 hits with a triple and scored 2 runs. SS Dave Risinger had 2 hits, stole a base and had an RBI (and a BIG error). PH/CF Jack Hinckley had a hit in his only AB, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI.

The final game of 2001.

Sacramento Solons (77-84 .478 15 GB in 7th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (67-94 .416 25 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West)

SAC: Juan Sanchez (26-R 15-15 3.24) vs. POR: Roger Lerer (27-L 0-1 6.23) Rookie

We are 4-0 against Sanchez and he has a 6.56 ERA against us. Let's hope the magic can continue for 1 more game. He has gone at least 8 innings and allowed exactly 1 run in each of his last 3 starts, but is only 1-0.

Lerer pitched his best game of the season last time out and got a no decision. Not that it was that great or that he has pitched many games this season....

We might try to sneak Bobby Johnson a win in relief if the opportunity arises.

Angel Arana walks on 4 pitches.... Bases loaded with 1 out. Call to the Bullpen: John Cox (28-L). Eddie Dyer grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and a run scores. 3 to 0, Solons. We do not turn a double play because 2B Shannon Kuchta was brutalized by Angel Arana. Kuchta has to leave the game... Melvin Rodarte goes in to play 2nd. Mario Vasquez grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the First:
Brian Mitchell grounds out to 2nd. Gilberto Valdez walks on 4 pitches. Melvin Rodarte flies out to right. Glenn Snowden pops out to right.
