Notes:
The Phillies went 3-3 this week, losing 2 0f 3 to the San Diego and sthen taking 2 of 3 from LA. Pitching remains a problem as we gave up 44 runs in those 6 games. BRuce Ruffin who was on fire for almost 2 months, went ice cold, giving up 19 ER over 10 IP in his last 2 starts. That raised his ERA from 3.48 to 4.31.

Joe Cowley (12 ER in 21 IP) and Craig McMurtry (13 ER in 11 IP ), were terrible in August and no longer in my plans. If they clear waivers will spend the rest of the year in the minors. McLarnan struggled in his first big league experience (5.1 IP, 7 ER, 15 H, 4 BB) and will get another shot at some point. Britt Burns has been great this year with a 17 IP, 17 H, 1.06 ERA, 6 BB/6K and will get a chance to hold a middle relief spot for the rest of the season. Len Watts has been steady but unspectatular at 5-10, 5.67 ERA, 4.37 FIP, 109 K in 138 IP.

I signed Charlie Moore because even though he is a catcher, he can play CF and I needed a CF at AAA. Some of my AA outfields were getting healthy, so I released Wayne Cromartie who hit .135 in 55 PA at AA and .083 in 14 PA at AAA.

The Utica Blue Sox won the Eastern Division of the New York-Penn League at 52-28 and will meet the Batavia Trojans in a best of 7 championship series.

Division Leaders:
AL East: Milwaukee 79-44
AL West: Kansas City 71-52
NL East: New York 68-55
NL West: Cincinnati 74-50

Notable MLB News:
Astros SP Danny Darwin (75/75), torn flexor tendon, out 12-13 months
Dodgers C Mike Scioscia (80/80), setback in rehab, out another 6 weeks
Royals LF Danny Tartabull (75/75), fractured shoulder blade, out for 4 weeks

Hey you took a chance on Cowley and McMurtry, no harm in that. They just couldn't deliver. Building for the future! A grand scheme! Looking forward to seeing how all this turns out, and like the detail. Feels like I'm reading a team newsletter. Good stuff!!

When you stink, you have to take those chances. The first year in a save is always tough because of the lack of free agents. If nothing else, getting Kevin Appier and Greg Hibbard made this year a plus. Hopefully they develop as expected and some of the others make a big step forward.

Spartanburg had another bad month going 13-15 and are now 13.5 games back with 16 games left. I promoted a few players from B&C Utica to gain a few weeks experience at a higher level. The Blue sox went 15-4 in August to finish the regular season at 52-28, won the East division by 7 games on Little Falls. The NYPL playoffs consist of just a best of 7 championship between the the two division winners. Utica defeater the Batavis Tigers 4-2, with LF Mark Cobb, .435, 3 HR, 5 RBI, .826 SLG, winning the Series MVP. Utica lead the league in Runs, AVG, OBP, Runs Against and Starters Era. Thier best batter this season was 1B Jimmy Barragan, who hit .361 with 30 2B, 15 HR, 56 RBIs, 51 BBs to 28 Ks, 1.046 OPS and 3.8 WAR. Their best pitcher on the season was SP Andy Carter, who went 7-4 with 3.79 ERA. He gave up 115 hirs, 10 HRs, 43 BB and 81 Ks in 107 IP. He has a FIP of 3.87 and a WAR of 2.3. Since their season was the first to end, I will promote Kevin Appier (25/70) and SP Andy Ashby (20/40) to Spartanburg.

#7 Prospect - Kevin Appier (25/70) - 3-1, 4.04 ERA, 3.94 FIP, 35.2 IP, 6 HR, 28 K, 3 BB, 1.01 WHIP, 7.1 K/9, 0.7 BB/9, 0.7 WAR.

B&C - Bend Phillies (Northwest - North) Record:35-28, 2nd, 6 GB Power Ranking: 3/8
The Bend Phillies went 13-13 in August and are now 6 back with 7 to go. Since only the division winners make the playoffs, the chances of the making the playoffs are slim. The pitching has struggled this year, ranking near the bottom in most categories.

Injuries:
  • CF Louie Meadows (45/45), separated shoulder, out 3 weeks
  • 1B Von Hayes (60/70), strained oblique, out 7 days. Then he suffered a set and is out another 4 days.

Transactions:
  • Sent CF Milt Thompson (30/30) to AAA Maine for rehab assignment
  • Activated 1B Von Hayes (60/70) from rehab assignment
  • Claimed C Tom Prince (25/25) off of waivers from Pittsburgh

  • Activated CF Milt Thompson (30/30) from rehab assignment
  • Added RF Kevin Ward (20/25) to 40 man roster
  • Purchased contract of RF Kevin Ward (20/25) from AA Reading
The Phillies went 4-2 this week, losing 2 of 3 to the New York Mets before sweeping the Pittsburgh Pirates. Von Hayes was activated from his rehab stint as I felt he was ready. He hit .381 with 1 HR and 4 RBIs and played well in the field. Though he injured his oblique before playing and is out for another week. Then Meadows was lost for 3 weeks leaving me with no CFs. His injury is only for 3 weeks but I put him on the 60 day DL as the season is over in 3 weeks. I brought up Milt Thompson after 1 game on rehab as I needed him. I also called up Kevin Ward who was playing great at AA and I wanted him to get a taste of the majors.

I had saw C Tom Prince on the waiver wire, and he has a decent arm and some gap power and plate discipline. He was injured and would not play this year but he was a speculative pickup for next year. He hit .281 with 12 HR, 48 RBI, 36 BB, 36 Ks in 358 PAs at AA this season. He also throw out 30% of base runners and has a positive zone rating.

Division Leaders:
AL East: Boston 91-51
AL West: Kansas City 84-59
NL East: New York 79-62
NL West: Cincinnati 86-57

Notable MLB News:
Blue Jays 1B Fred McGriff (75/75), strained hamstring, out for season
Padres SP Dave Dravecky (40/40), fractured elbow, out for season

The Phillies went 5--2 this week to impriove to 10-8 in September. I split a 2 game series with the Cardinals, swept a 2 game series with the Cubs, and took 2 of 3 from Expos. We were offically eliminated from the playoffs on 9/20/1987.

I offered Britt Burns a contract extension. He had pitched really well in AAA this year and struggled some with the Phillies, but I know I'm getting rid of alot of my relievers and I wanted to keep him for at least next year.

The Phillies went 1-6 this week. They were in 2 game series with the Cardinals and the Cubs, and lost 2 of 3 from Expos. With only 6 games left, I decided against bringing up any other players. At the end of the season, I will do a post on each minor league team and the Phillies as well. It's been a tough season but I felt that this season will help set up the future.

The following coaches have not agreed to contract extensions and have been let go: Maine Hitting Coach Jim Arevalo, Reading Pitching Coach Tim Crosley and Spartanburg Pitching Coach Pat Borchert.

The following players have filed their retirement papers:
  • C Charlie Moore - Age: 34, signed as FA in August. In 19 games at AAA Maine, he hit .169, with 0 HR, 8 RBI, 14 K, .459 OPS, 22 OPS+, -0.7 WAR
  • LF Joel Youngblood - Age: 36, signed as FA in June. In 34 games at AAA Maine, he hit .292, with 7 HR, 23 RBI, 26 K, .817 OPS, 114 OPS+, 0.4 WAR

Division Leaders:
AL East: Boston 99-56
AL West: Kansas City 92-64
NL East: New York 88-68
NL West: Cincinnati 92-63

Notable MLB News:
The New York Mets has clinched the NL East.

Phillies Phodder: Weekly Report - 10/5/1987
Record: 71-91, 6th Place 20 GB (2-4)
Power Ranking: 22nd, 73 pts
Fan Interest/Loyalty: 69/Below Average
Owner Mood: Happy
Hot Players:
Injuries:
  • Placed C Lance Parrish (65/65), broken elbow out 7-8 months
  • Placed CF Milt Thompson (25/25), sprained ankle, out 7-8 weeks

Transactions:
  • Placed C Lance Parrish (65/65) on 60 day DL
  • Placed C Brian Harper (25/50) on 40 man roster
  • Purchased contract of C Brian Harper (25/50) from AAA Maine
The Phillies went 2-4 this week. They lost 2 of 3 to the New York Mets and then lost 2 of 3 to the Pittsburgh Pirates. They finished the season 71-91, which was 2 games below the BNN Preseason Prediction. After the injury to Lance Parrish, I needed to bring up a catcher. With none on the 40 man roster, I had to add Brian Harper to the that roster and bring him.

The following players have filed their retirement papers:
  • RF Rick Manninn - Age: 33, signed as FA in June. In 78 games at A Clearwater, he hit .339, with 13 HR, 47 RBI, 36 BB, .940 OPS, 148 OPS+, 2.5 WAR. He also went 2 for 8 at AA Reading.

Notable MLB News:
Reds LF Kal Daniels (70/70), fractured thumb, out 6 weeks
Orioles RF Lee Lacy (25/25), broken kneecap, career ending
Rangers CL Dale Mohorcic (55/55), shoulder tendinitis, out 3-4 weeks

[B]MLB Playoff Reports 10/27/1987[B]
WOW! It was a wild finish to the 1987 regular season. The New York Mets may have clinched the NL East early, but the other divisions came down to the wire. In the NL West The Cincinnati Reds held off the Los Angeles Dodgers and won the division, on September 30th, with 4 days left in the season. In the AL East, the Milwaukee Brewers and the Boston Red Sox, were tied with 3 games left to go. In the final series, they played each other. Milwaukee took the first two games to win the divison. Sadly, Boston's curse continues as they won the final game of the season to win 100 games on the season. They had the second best record in the majors, but will miss the playoffs. In the AL West, the Kansas City Royals had a 1 game lead on the Seattle Mariners haeding into the final series of the season. The Royals took 2 of 3 from the Minnesota Twins, while the Mariners swept the Texas Rangers to force a 1 game playoff. The Mariners went into the bottom of the 8th with a 4-2 lead. The Royals tied it on a 2 run HR by rookie Kevin Seitzer. The Royals went on to win it in the bottom of the 10th to win the division!

In the NLCS, the Mets took Game 1 by a score of 3-2, with Frank Viola getting the win and Ted Power taking the loss. In Game 2, Mets SP Dwight Gooden throw a 3 hit shutout. The Reds came up just short in Game 3, losing 2-1 in 12 innings. The Mets completed the sweep in Game 4 winning 4-3. Mets SP Dwight Gooden was named Series MVP.

In the ALCS, both Game 1 starters went the distance and the Brewers won 1-0 behind Teddy Higuera's shutout. In Game 2, the Royals shifted home field advantage by winning 5 to 2. Kansas City won easily at home in Game 3 by a score 9-1. Then in high scoring game that saw 5 HRs, the Royals edged the Brewers 7-6, putting themselves 1 win from the World Series. Game 1 hero, Teddy Higuera went the distance in Game 5 limiting the Royals to 1 run on 3 hits as they won 9-1. The Brewers, back at home in Game 6, forced a Game 7 by escaping with a 5 to 4 victory. In an exciting Game 7, the Brewers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 2 innings. Kansas City cut the lead to 2 in the Top of the 4th, but Milwaukee answered back in the bottom half of the inning and tacked on a another in the 5th. Neither team scored again giving the Milwaukee Brewers a 5-1 victory and a trip to the World Series. Brewers SP Teddy Higuera was named Series MVP.

Game 1 of the World Series went 12 innings with the Brewers winning 3-2 behind another brilliant outing by Teddy Higuera. Not wanting to lose their first 2 home games, the Mets turned to young ace Dwight Gooden, who responded by brilliantly shutting down theBrewers 6-0. He held them to 3 hits while striking out 9. Game 3, in Milwaukee, was a back and forth game, the saw the Mets emerge victoriously, 6-5. The Brewers evened up the series at 2, winning Game 4, 5-4, on a wlak off double by Paul Molitor in the 10th inning. In Game 5, Teddy Higuera finally got outpitched as Frank Viola through a 8 hit shutout as the Mets won 3-0. This put them up 1 with the series shifting back to New York. Game 6 was a slugfest that saw Milwaukee outlast the Mets 8-5 setting up a Game 7. In the final game of the 1987 season, the Mets score 2 runs in the 4th, Milwaukee 1 in the 5th and the Mets scored again in the 6th to increase thier lead to 3-1. They blew it open with 4 runs in the 8th and then David Cone slammed the door closed in the 9th, giving the New York Mets a 7-1 victory and their second straight title and third championship overall. Gary Carter, hit .429 with 2 HR and 7 RBIs to win the World Series MVP.

Congrats to the New York Mets

Going to be an interesting offseason for sure! I see the owner mood though is happy, which isn't surprising in Philly. As long as you're making them money, that's what matters most!

Good luck in the offseason!

11/11/1987 - End of Year Report
It was a tough year for the Phightin' as they finished 71-91, which was the 2nd worst record in the NL and the 5th worst in the majors. This season saw a big turnover on the active roster as well as the minors as the GM started looking towards the future.

Here is an overview of the players who played for the Phils this season:

Catchers
  • Lance Parrish - 389 AB, .278 19 HR, 69 RBI, 6.7%, 17.3 K%, .328 OBP, .803 OPS, .347 wOBA, 112 wRC+, 2.8 WAR, +2.1 ZR, 33.6 CS% Out until June 1988
  • Darren Daulton - 309 AB, .243, 12 HR, 41 RBI, 4 SB, 11.1%, 22.7 K%, .328 OBP, .738 OPS, .323 wOBA, 96 wRC+, 1.2 WAR, -0.5 ZR, 31.5 CS%
  • Jamie Quirk - 25 AB, .240, 2 HR, 5 RBI, .321 OBP, 10.7%, 28.6 K%, .841 OPS, .360 wOBA, 120 wRC+, 0.1 WAR - TRADED
  • Brian Harper - 1 for 4, 1 BB - FA

Parrish will be out until around June. That will make the Daulton the starter with Nelson, if I resign him, as the likely backup.

Infielders
  • Juan Samuel - 625 AB, .306, 30 HR, 119 RBI, 33 SB, 6.6 BB%, 17.9 K%, .894 OPS, .380 wOBA, 134 wRC+, 5.3 WAR, +1.9 ZR
  • Mike Schimdt - 538 AB, .314, 32 HR, 90 RBI, 11.4 BB%, 10.9 K%, .944 OPS, .398 wOBA, 146 wRC+, 5.1 WAR, -5.0 ZR
  • Von Hayes - 308 AB, .308, 15 HR, 42 RBI, 22 SB, 16.4 BB%, 10.3 K%, .948 OPS, .403 wOBA, 149 wRC+, 3.4 WAR, +1.7 ZR as CF, -0.8 ZR as 1B
  • Rick Schu - 281 AB, .231, 7 HR, 35 RBI, 4 SB, 4.7 BB%, 17.3 K%, .634 OPS, .272 wOBA, 62 wRC+, -1.0 WAR, -2.0 ZR,
  • Steve Jeltz - 198 AB, .207, 0 HR, 19 RBI, 0 SB, 10.1 BB%, 16.7 K%, .557 OPS, .248 wOBA, 46 wRC+, -0.4 WAR, +1.2 ZR
  • Luis Aguayo - 160 AB, .237, 8 HR, 25 RBI, 1 SB, 7.6 BB%, 22.7 K%, .752 OPS, .313 wOBA, 89 wRC+, 0.7 WAR - TRADED
  • Mike Gallego - 137 AB, .270, 3 HR, 15 RBI, 0 SB, 11.7 BB%, 10.4 K%, .711 OPS, .302 wOBA, 82 wRC+, 0.7 WAR, -1.3 ZR
  • Walt Weiss - 102 AB, .118, 0 HR, 3 RBI, 2 SB, 8.7 BB%, 25.2 K%, .358 OPS, .174 wOBA, 0 wRC+, -0.9 WAR
  • Greg Legg - 79 AB, .228, 0 HR, 4 RBI, 2 SB, 11.2 BB%, 7.9 K%, .618 OPS, .286 wOBA, 71 wRC+, -0.3 WAR
  • Brian Giles - 32 AB, .219, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 SB, 18.6 BB%, 25.6 K%, .756 OPS, .333 wOBA, 101 wRC+, 0.1 WAR, +0.1 ZR

Schimdt and Samuel are set at 3B and 2B. I may look to FA for a 1B or play Carmelo Martinez there. Giles, Gallego, or Weiss will compete for the SS job with the others either as the backups or in AAA. Schu and Jeltz will either be released or in AAA. Legg will most likely be kept at AAA. I like his K and BB rates and he can play multiple positions. Hayes had a better season defensively as a CF than 1B. Surprisingly, Schimdt was my worst defender with a -5.0 ZR at 3B and 21 errors. I may consider him at 1B at least some of the time next season.

Outfielders
  • Carmelo Martinez - 320 AB, .225, 3 HR, 30 RBI, 3 SB, 8.2 BB%, 19.5 K%, .596 OPS, .266 wOBA, 58 wRC+, -1.5 WAR, 0.0 ZR at 1B, -4.0 at RF, -1.2 at LF
  • Chris James - 273 AB, .260, 13 HR, 51 RBI, 1 SB, 4.8 BB%, 15.4 K%, .759 OPS, .325 wOBA, 98 wRC+, 0.0 WAR, +1.0 ZR in LF, +0.2 ZR in RF, -8.2 ZR in CF
  • Mike Easler - 273 AB, .289, 8 HR, 34 RBI, 0 SB, 7.0 BB%, 16.7 K%, .755 OPS, .325 wOBA, 97 wRC+, -0.3 WAR, -9.2 ZR in LF - TRADED
  • Milt Thompson - 222 AB, .248, 4 HR, 15 RBI, 23 SB, 6.7 BB%, 18.8 K%, .626 OPS, .279 wOBA, 67 wRC+, 0.2 WAR, +2.7 ZR in CF - FA
  • Greg Gross - 188 AB, .223, 1 HR, 15 RBI, 0 SB, 16.2 BB%, 7.5 K%, .642 OPS, .299 wOBA, 80 wRC+, -0.3 WAR
  • Jeff Stone - 146 AB, .233, 4 HR, 17 RBI, 6 SB, 7.5 BB%, 25.5 K%, .688 OPS, .306 wOBA, 85 wRC+, -0.6 WAR, -4.1 ZR in RF
  • Keith Miller - 120 AB, .225, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 8 SB, 13.3 BB%, 16.1 K%, .669 OPS, .294 wOBA, 76 wRC+, 0.0 WAR, +1.2 ZR in LF
  • Ron Roenicke - 107 AB, .206, 1 HR, 13 RBI, 1 SB, 14.8 BB%, 21.9 K%, .610 OPS, .286 wOBA, 72 wRC+, 0.1 WAR - TRADED
  • Rick Lancellotti - 69 AB, .246, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 0 SB, 9.1 BB%, 20.8 K%, .645 OPS, .292 wOBA, 75 wRC+, -0.3 WAR - FA
  • Kevin Ward - 67 AB, .313, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 4 SB, 4.3 BB%, 24.3 K%, .880 OPS, .377 wOBA, 132 wRC+, 0.7 WAR, +1.0 ZR in RF
  • Louie Meadows - 66 AB, .167, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 10 SB, 11.7 BB%, 23.4 K%, .551 OPS, .244 wOBA, 43 wRC+, 0.0 WAR, +1.6 ZR in CF
  • Glenn Wilson - 66 AB, .227, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 0 SB, 4.3 BB%, 8.7 K%, .594 OPS, .263 wOBA, 56 wRC+, 0.0 WAR - TRADED
  • Ben Oglivie - 35 AB, .400, 2 HR, 18 RBI, 0 SB, 10.3 BB%, 10.3 K%, .976 OPS, .432 wOBA, 168 wRC+, 0.3 WAR - TRADED

My inital thought is Hayes will start in CF, with James, THompson, Miller and Meadows fighting for the other spots. Gross is a FA and won't be back and Stone will be AAA depth. After looking at defensive stats, I think Martinez would be best suited at 1B

Starters
  • Bruce Ruffin - 33/33 G/GS, 14-9, 217.1 IP, 18.6 K%, 9.6 BB%, 4.14 ERA, 3.46 FIP, 59% GB, 6.1 WAR
  • Kevin Gross - 33/33, 11-17, 204 IP, 20.8 K%, 12.4 BB%, 5.29 ERA, 4.88 FIP, 57% GB, 2.2 WAR
  • Mike Maddux - 37/17, 10-7, 160 IP, 21 K%, 12.7 BB%, 4.95 ERA, 4.40 FIP, 54% GB, 2.4 WAR
  • Don Carmen - 19/19, 6-7, 137.2 IP, 22.1 K%, 8.2 BB%, 2.75 ERA, 3.61 FIP, 51% GB, 3.6 WAR - TRADED
  • Shane Rawley - 14/14, 2-8, 92.1 IP, 14 K%, 9.4 BB%, 6.73 ERA, 4.63 FIP, 57% GB, 1.3 WAR - TRADED
  • Joe Cowley - 6/6, 0-4, 29.1 IP, 18.4 K%, 22.7 BB%, 9.51 ERA, 6.68 FIP, 52% GB, -0.2 WAR - FA
  • Freddie Toliver - 34/6, 3-3, 77.1 IP, 15.9 K%, 15.6 BB%, 6.28 ERA, 5.58 FIP, 56% GB, 0.0 WAR
  • Steve Cummings - 8/8, 1-5, 50.1 IP, 18.9 K%, 16.1 BB%, 5.19 ERA, 4.71 FIP, 49% GB, 0.5 WAR
  • Odell Jones - 10/10, 3-5, 50 IP, 18.9 K%, 15.6 BB%, 5.58 ERA, 5.00 FIP, 57% GB, 0.6 WAR - FA
  • Len Watts - 6/6, 1-1, 36.1 IP, 20.1 K%, 20.1 BB%, 5.20 ERA, 5.55 FIP, 47% GB, 0.1 WAR
  • Craig McMurtry - 11/1, 0-1, 25 IP, 15.8 K%, 22.8 BB%, 11.50 ERA, 8.12 FIP, 52% GB, -0.7 WAR
  • Britt Burns - 10/1, 0-1, 14.1 IP, 13.6 K%, 17.5 BB%, 9.42 ERA, 8.68 FIP, 59% GB, -0.5 WAR

I would expect that Ruffin and Gross would be the 1 and 2 unless I get a FA. Then Watts, Cummings and Burns and a few minor leaguers would fight for the last 3 spots. Maddux and Toliver would be better served in the bull pen.

Relievers
  • Dave Rozema - 29/9 G/GS, 2-5, 83.2 IP, 15.1 K%, 16.4 BB%, 6.67 ERA, 5.19 FIP, 58% GB, 0.4 WAR - FA
  • Steve Bedrosian - 38/0, 1-5, 19 SV, 42.1 IP, 27.5 K%, 13.1 BB%, 4.68 ERA, 3.62 FIP, 46% GB, 0.6 WAR - TRADED
  • Michael Jackson - 29/0, 2-4, 1 SV, 36.1 IP, 21 K%, 16.5 BB%, 5.20 ERA, 5.14 FIP, 51% GB, -0.1 WAR
  • Jesse Orosco - 35/0, 5-3, 3 SV, 32.2 IP, 24.4 K%, 14.0 BB%, 3.31 ERA, 3.61 FIP, 56% GB, 0.5 WAR
  • Tom Hume - 21/0, 3-2, 32 IP, 16.5 K%, 14.8 BB%, 6.75 ERA, 6.30 FIP, 64% GB, -0.5 WAR - TRADED
  • Ed Nunez - 26/0, 4-1, 17 SV, 32 IP, 28 K%, 11.4 BB%, 0.95 ERA, 2.85 FIP, 44% GB, 0.7 WAR
  • Kent Tekulve - 21/0, 0-2, 1 SV, 21 IP, 13.7 K%, 9.6 BB%, 6.43 ERA, 2.86 FIP, 66% GB, 0.5 WAR - TRADED
  • Jim Corsi - 17/0, 1-0, 20 IP, 16.9 K%, 15.5 BB%, 1.80 ERA, 4.99 FIP, 58% GB, 0.0 WAR
  • John McLarnan - 13/0, 0-1, 18 IP, 15.6 K%, 14.1 BB%, 7.50 ERA, 4.91 FIP, 62% GB, 0.0 WAR
  • Dan Scatzeder - 14/0, 2-0, 17.2 IP, 18.8 K%, 11.9 BB%, 4.58 ERA, 4.66 FIP, 53% GB, 0.1 WAR - TRADED

Ed Nunez was outstanding when coming over and will open as my closer. Maddux and Orosco should open in the pen.Corsi, Toliver and Jackson will compete with minor leaguers and any FAs that I sign for the other spots.
