The fall classic

In the end, it is all about the Champion...

Trying this once again. This thread will be dedicated to the World Series, the great fall classic, from 1903 going forward. What I will do is create a historical game starting in 1903 when the very first world series was played and move forward covering every world series in detail with short updates on the seasons played. I will also play through the seasons that had no world series like 1904 and 1994.

Real historical lineups will be used so I expect to get many world series rematches but in some years it will be interesting to see if the pennant goes to a surprise team. Remember this is an EXACT historical replay, so no transactions will be allowed.

The Pennants

1903 American League Champions

Philadelphia Athletics (86-49)
First Pennant

It was a breathtaking pennant race in the American League. The Boston Americans lead for most of the way before the Cleveland Naps won 18 games in a row and had a 24-4 August to jump in front. September however belonged to the Philadelphia Athletics and Connie Mack. The A's paced themselves and went 21-3 in the final month including winning their last nine games. Rube Waddell leads the A's with his 1.55 ERA and incredible 313 strikeouts in the dead ball era. This team also played the best defense in the league and allowed the fewest runs. Lave Cross and Socks Seybold may be the best offensive players, but this Philly team is all about their pitching, and along with Waddell who won 25 games comes Eddie Plank and Charles Bender who will make the World Series a tough go for the National League club to overcome.

1903 National League Champions

Pittsburgh Pirates (93-47)
First Pennant

The Pirates left little doubt who the best team in the National League is and who will represent them in the first World Series. The Pirates won 40 games in July and August and were lead by maybe the brightest star in the game in Honus Wagner. Wagner hit .342 but drove in 91 runs while stealing 47 bases and playing a tremendous short stop. Deacon Phillipe won 28 games and was the best arm in the league and will argue with any American League fan that he is better then even Waddell, Fred Clarke is an outstanding player manager, hit .339 in the middle of the order and has a line up that lead the league with 477 runs. The Pirates were 50-20 away from home.

1903 WORLD SERIES

Game 1
Friday October 2, 1903
At Exposition Park Pittsburgh
Att: 6,453
Athletics lead series 1-0

WADDELL OUTSHINES PHILLIPPE

Athletics...............3
Pirates..................2

The first ever World Series game was contested under cloudy skies in Pittsburgh this afternoon. The game featured the two best arms in either league as 25 game winner Rube Waddell of the A's faced 28 game winner Deacon Phillippe. Philadelphia as the visitors scored the first runs when in the 3rd inning catcher Ossee Schreckkengost hit the first ever World Series home run when with a man on.

The A's extended their lead to 3-0 before the home team before the Pirates scored twice in the seventh inning but left the tying run on base in what would be their best chance of the game. Waddell went the distance striking out seven on 124 pitches and walking no one. Phillippe struck out five in a decent effort and Honus Wagner went 3-4 with a run jn the loss.

1903 WORLD SERIES

Game 2
Saturday October 3
At Exposition Park Pittsburgh
Att: 6,437
Athletics lead series 2-0

Athletics Comeback Puts Them Up 2 Games

Athletics.............7
Pirates................3

With Pirates starter Sam Leever cruising on the mound and a 4-0 lead in appeared to all that the Pittsburgh Pirates were on the verge of tying this best of nine series. Connie Mack and his club had other ideas however a rallied late scoring three runs in the 6th inning and another in the 7th to tie the score. Topsy Hartsell drove in two of the runs on a two out double.

With the game tied late, Monte Cross cleared bases as the visitors put up three runs in the 9th to stun the Pittsburgh crowd and leave Leever reeling.

"I am proud of the boys and the effort they made" said manager Mack, "we can not wait to get back home to our beds and continue our good play."

Game three and the series continues in Philadelphia for games three and four as the favorite Pirates look to get back on track the hard way.

1903 World Series

Game 3
Monday October 5
At Colombia Park Philadelphia
Att: 9915
Athletics lead series 3-0

PLANK CONTINUES DOMINANCE OF PIRATES

It has been nothing but Athletics in the inaugural World Series almost to the point now where the American League is starting to feel the much better league. The A's are winning games with ease and in front of almost 10,000 spectators are Colombia Park Eddie Plank went the distance allowing one run and seven hits in nine innings. Socks Seybold singled in two runs off Brickyard Kennedy in the fifth inning where the home team scored three runs.

The Pirates look unmotivated and reeling as they are down now three games to none and some are wondering if they even have the heart to win one. Honus Wagner is batting only .250 with three hits in 12 atbats for the series and no extra base hits.

1903 WORLD SERIES

Game 4
Tuesday October 6
At Colombia Park Philadelphia
Att: 9976
Athletics lead series 3-1

Pirates.................3
Athletics..............2

ERROR IN THE 11th GETS PIRATES WIN

A throwing error by Lave Cross in the top of the ninth inning broke a 2-2 tie allowing a run to cross the plate. The Pirates would hang on and earn their first win of this best on nine series. The game saw seven errors in total but the pitching of Rube Waddel and Deacon Phillipe were both very good as both starters pitched the full nine innings.

The Athletics had tied the game in the bottom of the ninth when Danny Murphy singled with two out to score Harry Davis. The A's up to their mistake late in this game had done anything right, and it will be interesting to see if the majorly critized Pirates and manager Fred Clarke now pick themselves up and make a series of this. The series moves back to Pittsburgh on Thursday.

1903 WORLD SERIES

Game 5
Friday October 7
At Colombia Park Philadelphia
Att: 6443
Athletics lead series 4-1

SIX RUN 8TH LIFTS A'S AGAIN

The Philadelphia Athletics wasted no time getting back on track in the first World Series winning their fourth game of the series 8-3 on Friday at Exhibition Stadium. The visiting side put up 6 runs in the 8th inning to break open a close game. Harry Davis and Lave Cross both drove in two runs in the inning the get the best of Pittsburgh starter Sam Leever.

Chief Bender was very sharp in his second start striking out five and only allowing runs late in the 9th inning when he began to tire. Honus Wagner of the Pirates who hit .342 for the season is sitting on a .190 average in this world series; fans have let him know about it. The Athletics and Connie Mack are now one game away from ending this series, and very few expect the Pirates to stop them in game six on Saturday.

1903 World Series

Game 6
Friday October 9
At Colombia Park Philadelphia
Att: 6478
Athletics win series 5-1

PHILADELPHIA CROWNED CHAMPIONS

Sometimes the winner is the one who got the lucky bounces and the lucky calls, and sometimes the winner is just the one who played better.

It was the latter case in 1903, as the Philadelphia Athletics topped the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-0 tonight at Exposition Park to win the World Series. It was the 1st title in franchise history.

"When you play for championships, you have to play better than the team in the other dugout. We did that in this series, and all year. Now we're the best team in baseball," said Philadelphia starting pitcher Eddie Plank, who was named series MVP.

The Athletics took the series 5-1. The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the AL and a 86-49 record.

Philadelphia manager Connie Mack grinned and nodded when asked to comment on Plank's words.

"Eddie said it best -- we played better than the other team," he said.

Hometown officials announced they were already planning a "grand celebration" for the winners in the days to come.

The Pennants

1903 American League Champions

Cleveland Naps (94-57)
First Pennant

After coming up just short last September, the Naps started off slow again in 1904 but turned it on a little earlier this season to give their faithful something they could not a year earlier. Not sure what the formula for great September play is but this club went 29-13 to end the season. Another close pennant race saw the Naps hold off Philadelphia and Chicago pulling away by more than 8 games. The batting champion Nap Lajoie fits so well with Elmer Flick in the middle of the order. Addie Joss was dominant again with a 1.65 ERA in his 19 wins while Bill Bernhard won 22. Harry Bay who stole 57 bases this season will miss the fall classic through injury. Many are obviously saying the Naps have no chance agains the mightly National League Giants, some are saying the pennant was enough for this team, dont count on it.

1904 National League Pennant Winners

New York Giants (112-41)
First Pennant

Pure dominance of the National League by the Giants winning 112 games and never trailing in the pennant race. Christy Matthewson likely had the best season for a pitcher anyone has ever seen, 36-9 with a 1.87 ERA while the offense scored 723 runs outscoring their opponents by exctly 300 runs! Dan McGann drove in 103 runs while Mike Donlin hit .353. The club will miss catcher Roger Bresnahan for the World Series but that loss has not stopped almost a unanimous prediction that the Giants will handle the Naps for the championship.

1904 World Series

Game 1
October 13, 1904
At League Park
ATT: 10,305
New York Leads Series 1-0

Mathewson Drives In Run, Pitches Win

As expected the New York Giants won the first game of the World Series 4-1 behind their 24 year old ace Christy Mathewson. Matty pitched nine innings allowing seven hits and one run while striking out seven and even the run the Naps scored turned out to be unearned.

Mathewson even drove in a run with a double and his side scored twice in the first inning to put the pressure on Addie Joss and giving their ace more then enough to win the opening game.

Joss pitched well for himself going 9 innings as well but there was little to no room for error in this one. The favorites take the opening game as expected.

Wiltse Throws First Shutout In Series Game

A wonderful game of baseball was had on a glorious afternoon in Cleveland and for the first time, a shutout was thrown in a World Series game. New York left hander Hooks Wiltse was in complete command and erased the Cleveland lineup for nine innings allowing fits hits, striking out three, and walking only one.

The Giants Dan McGann drove in the only runs of the game including an RBI triple off of Earl Moore who likely deserved better in the loss. The Giants pitching has been the story of the series so far as Wiltse and Matthewson have carried the club at League Park and now the favorites have every intention of ending this series in New York over the next few days.

Giants Smelling Sweep Back Home

Dummy Taylor continued the trend of outstanding pitching for the New York Giants who returned home to a banner day crowd to defeat the Naps again, 7 to 2. Taylor went the full nine innings allowing only one run and was supported with five runs scored by the home team in the first two innings of play.

Red Donahue for the visitors only lasted 4 innings and Art Devlin hit the first and only home run of the series in this game. The Giants hammered 11 hits and had three players drive in two runs each.

The Giants now are one game away from capping a historic season and their ace Christy Mathewson will take the mound to close out the series in the upcoming game 5. Everyone seems to think a win is a foregone conclusion.

Pure Class; Matthewson Hands New York Title

He did it again and did it this time for a clinching championship. The National League got its revenge and Giants manager John McGraw could not be happier. Once again it was the ace of the team and best pitcher likely the game has ever seen that brought it home.

Christy Mathewson threw another shutout and threw only 73 pitches while allowing only four hits and striking out three. The Cleveland side really had trouble even getting on base in a series that in the end was a real nightmare for them. After New York scored twice in the first inning the pressure and setting was set as the Polo Grounds crowd of over 14,000 cheered every pitch the rest of the way.

Even the great Nap Lajoie hit only .250 for the series with no RBI proving the futility of the club. Mathewson threw 18 scoreless innings building on the legend of his dominant 36 win season and a sweep overall says much about the accomplishment of the club.

Many are saying that this Giants club could be the very best anyone has ever watched play. A ticker tape parade is scheduled this week in Manhattan to celebrate the success.
