New York Mets starter Charlie Puleo was in a groove as he led his team to a win over the Atlanta Braves, 5-2. With the win, New York has a record of 68-53. Atlanta falls to 60-63. It could have been a different outcome for New York, had it not been for Mookie Wilson, the 26-year old left fielder . Behind a solid performance from first baseman Dave Kingman, the New York Mets defeated the Chicago Cubs, 6-1. Kingman went 3 for 4 with a home run and a triple. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2 for the Mets. Ed Lynch, the winner, improved to 12-10. He held the Cubs to 1 earned run on 4 hits over 7 innings, while striking out 3 and walking 2. Kingman had a big at-bat with the bases empty in the bottom of the fourth inning, when he hit a solo home run. The Mets went on to win. The Philadelphia Phillies overcame a good performance by New York center fielder George Foster to knock off New York, 9-8, at Veterans Stadium. Foster was 3 for 6 with 2 home runs. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice. Tug McGraw, credited with the win, is now 1-0. He allowed no runs on 3 hits in 2 innings. With the win, Philadelphia elevates its record to 4-3.
Mike Schmidt, who is a four-time All-Star, chipped in for Philadelphia with a solo home run in the bottom of the tenth. Tim Leary handcuffed the San Diego Padres at Shea Stadium today, coming away with a 1-hit, complete game shutout.
"I had everything working for me out there," the New York Mets right-hander said later. "I used every one of my pitches, hit both sides of the plate really well and felt like I could do whatever I wanted." With his stuff working, Leary had little trouble with the Padres and led the Mets to victory, 11-0. He recorded 3 strikeouts and 3 walks in an impressive performance. To date this season Leary sports a 5-0 mark with a 1.70 ERA in 8 starting assignments. He has held the opposition to a .184 batting average and has 29 strikeouts in 53 innings.
