Fielding AI

I was playing a game recently and had a large lead (I wanna say it was 8-0 or something). It was the 6th inning and the computer had a guy on 2nd with no outs. The next batter up hit a single and they sent the runner home. My OF decided he would throw home to try and get the runner. His throw was not quick enough and the runner scored and it allowed the batter to advance to 2nd base.

With a large lead why would an OF ever throw home to try and get the runner? The OF should throw it back into 2nd base to keep the hitter at 1st.

Was my OF's decision based on his individual defense/fielding ratings? Or was this a programmed AI thing where the players have no concept of large leads and potentially meaningless runs?

Thanks

It might be your manager strategy settings.

Keep in mind that in every game throughout the season a fielder throws to the wrong base or misses the cutoff man. When this happens I imagine asking the player what he was thinking. So in one way this seems very realistic as perfect baseball is exceedingly rare.
