Beta Testing 1.0.3 with Arod/Garlon

At about 9 PM Eastern time, I started up a sim in 1912. It was an Arod/Garlon import, using one of their three year moving avg files to smooth out year to year and era to era changes. I plan to run it to 1953.

I left things as default. Left it with modern financials, which makes using Anderson Utilities tools simpler. Using 25 man rosters, 10 man reserve rosters, and I am not importing players to their original teams.

After 45 minutes, I'm in the home stretch of 1925. I have not been interrupted once for a invalid number of players or illegal # of pitchers.

It's a hoot to watch Babe Ruth of the White Sox dominate. It was fun to see Oscar Charleston get a $100 million dollar deal from the Yankees.

I am concerned about SB totals; they look low. Pie Traynor led the AL with 18 SB. I am reporting that concern

Can't say much about aging yet, have not done any math yet.

If I can stay awake, I can take stat requests tonight or tomorrow.

I just want to know how Matthewson, Joss, Johnson and Rube Waddell end up.....Please tell me one of them stayed around long enough to win 300 games...

Simmed through 1952 overnight. Just did a data dump and FTP'd it to work, so I can analyze it if it's a slow Friday. Dunno. Fridays are slow. Yesterday was sheer terror at the old grind, and scoping out the threat schedule for today I saw some ugly stuff being scripted .. .

Looks like complete games are way too common, a problem Ive encountered too. I know that in the early days it was usual to have a starter go 9 innings most of the time, but looking just at these samples I would have to say that this is still an area of concern.

I mean, realistically, the stress on pitchers' arms would seem to cause significant injury increases, as well as impacting offenses as fatigue reduced effectiveness. Instead, we get 20 year careers that are so over-inflated that any semblance of realism is destroyed.

Baseball is all about maintaining the delicate balance between pitcher and hitter, offense and defense; perturb that balance, be it with steroids, aluminum bats, or untiring pitchers and the game you get is not what I would call a realistic simulation. The uproar over aging arcs and doofus AI moves is merely reflective of the need for accuracy in achieving balance and believability in a game using 1's and 2's to imitate life. It would appear there is still work ahead for the crew.

W. Johnson
real CG 531
simmed CG 490

Gomez
real CG 173
simmed CG 439

Gomez had 7 more effective season in the sim, adding 204 more CG. A better comparison # may be 235 CG.

I also see where Gomez was averaging more starts per season in the sim than in real life, perhaps 7-9 a year. Gomez was a far bigger stud in the sim than in real life.

More importanty, Gomez did not tank at 28 and convert to MR.

Raidergoo - After the initial import in 1912, did you switch over to the Career Average DB v2.1r for importing rookie classes?

I ran a 1901-1960 sim the other day on 1.03 too. I set it up so that all teams use a 4-man strict-order rotation - this way each SP starts about 40 games each season which seems a bit more realistic than using highest rested starter. I also set pitcher endurance to low and was still seeing plenty of CG's.

From 1920-1950 there really weren't that many great base stealers so it is not too surprising that you didn't see any high SB totals after 1920 -but you should have had more than that between 1912-1919. It's probably just a mattter of choosing which SB frequency in the game setup provides the best results.

I did not switch DB's. Initially, I don't want too many moving parts, that's why I picked 1912-1952.

Injuries set to Normal, BTW.

I have not actually examined the actual SB totals or records. It's completely anecdotal observation.

This thread is dead. This was done with a build issued Wed. A new one just came out. I'll see how it does.

This is why you have to adjust your league setup throughout your historical simulation. If you start in the early 1900s, pitcher endurance will be very high, while reliever and closer usage will be very low or something similar. Once you get a a few decades into the sim, this will need to be adjusted, with the 'normal' setting being appropriate for pitching endurance for most of baseball history until the 1990s.

Reliever and closer usage shouldn't normalize quite as quickly, but they shouldn't be far behind if they are different at all. Closer usage is a lost cause for historical simulations, though, unless you make sure that the pitcher designated as a closer is also set as a MR and setup guy. Otherwise, if you set closer usage to low or very low, these pitchers appear in only a fraction of games compared to real life. Their saves will be down to more realistic levels, but their games pitched will be ridiculously low.
