Motivating Players
I'm in the playoffs in my first season playing the game, coaching in the Danish league. One of my (normally solid) D-men has been laying eggs - last few game ratings were all mid-40s as opposed to his usual mid-60s. Bumping him up a line for a few games didn't help, so I benched him. Does anyone know if FHM players can be motivated by benching like real players? Or any other ways to motivate players in a slump?

He may have a poor rating in the big games hidden attribute. I'd check for some line chemistry possibilities, change his tactical role to something more basic, demote him instead of promoting him.

Benching him is more likely to hurt his morale, unless he happened to miss some games where you were beaten badly. Moving him up to a unit where he was playing with a (presumably) better partner was a better idea; it may also be worth checking if he has particularly good chemistry with any teammates and then, if so, helping him out a bit by playing him with them.

I ended up benching him for three games - a loss and two wins. Another D-man got hurt so I put him back in for game 1 of the semis, and he had his best game of the season. He has some chemistry with his normal partner so I put him back on that line. I'm planning to leave him in for a few more to see what happens. It might be worth simplifying his role, as very few of my players are particularly skilled.
