What's an Average NHL Game Rating?

At the NHL level, what is an average, good, or poor game rating? Seems like most players are around mid-60's with good being in 80's or 90's and below 60's seeming poor.

Just trying to get a sense of at what rating is a player performing poorly for the NHL.

Thanks!

Average would be roughly around 60. Anybody consistently below 50 will probably play themselves out of the league fairly quickly. 65+ is very good, 70+ is relatively rare and should be considered excellent, 80+ is usually league-leading, 90+ an all-time great season. I don't think I've seen anybody higher than the low 90's.

The game rating score is for a particular role, right? Is there any way to tell whether a player would get a better rating if he had a different role? I'd imagine stats would tell some of it: a player who hits a lot should probably be played as a grinder/punishing defenseman, a player who gets lots of assists should be a playmaker, etc.

Yeah, it's adjusted based on the player's role - doing/failing to do things that are critical to the role will affect the score more. So if he's fighting or hitting a lot but is in a role where neither of those is a priority, it may make sense to try him in something more physical, and then watch for a change in the GR.

Is there a comprehensive list? For example, what would be a stat that would be good for playmakers but neutral (or bad) for setup men or Gretzky's officers? Vice-versa?

The game ratings scoring modifiers for those three roles will probably be so close as to be indistinguishable in the GR, since they're all focused on playmaking (Gretzky's Office gets a bit more credit for scoring, and less for defensive/body contact events, but it'll require the player do a lot of that to make a visible difference.) It'll mainly be more noticeable when the player is moving from roles that are significantly different from each other.

A lot of the stats that go into GR are also invisible to you - for example, we adjust GR based on how often someone is the target of an unsuccessful pass, but it'd massively bloat the (already large) database size to keep ongoing records of all of that, so it's just done on the fly by making an adjustment directly (and immediately) to the GR rather than recording the stat and calculating GR later.

Well, there goes my feature request for the game to track and show multiple game ratings for different role categories (i.e., "given how the player played, his game rating was 60 for TWF and 55 for playmaker").

Yeah, that would probably be difficult to implement. Although it does give me an idea for a way to give some additional coaching feedback to the user.
