epansion draft picks, no. Ammy draft picks yes. League settings - then under Rules i think, where you see the trading options. It's rare that the AI trades draft picks.

I have played trading draft picks sometimes. Never been offered one by the AI, but have used them to swing a deal the AI was close to accepting. Also, if you get to a point where you think your team can contend and want to add that one final impact player, but don't want to part with a high-caliber player, the AI will trade some very good players for 1st & 2nd round picks. I know this isn't realistic in baseball, but it is in every other major sport and this strategy is used frequently. Personally, I think baseball is behind the times on this.

I think you will enjoy playing this way. I find starting with an expansion team to be the most challenging and enjoyable way to play the game.
A few tips: - after you expand make sure you go through all the league settings menus to set your league to how you want it. After you are done all of this I would generate a new fictional schedule. ***note that after every 2nd year with the 32 team league the automatic scheduling will make up a weird schedule that features a lot of 2 game series----you can change this by generating a new schedule during the 'pre-season' but has to be done before the start of 'spring training' - With an expansion team I play the first season or two in 'Commissioner Mode' and also set myself to 'can't be fired'---the game has become much more expansion team friendly over the last few seasons but there are still some hiccups that a first year GM can't reasonably deal with (ex my owner is angry with me for not having enough draft picks playing for the big league team---I am in my 2nd year!) - on the day I expand the league and take control of my team I fire my scout and hire a good one. If you want him to be on board by the time the expansion draft goes offer him better then average money. I leave the rest of my staff (they are pretty lousy) in place and replace them as their contracts expire - sink your extra money in to development and scouting....you might as well use your extra budget money - if you are playing a quickstart and expanding from there you will have little time to sign free agents before the season starts....this is problematic because you have to fill your AAA, AA and A minors before the season starts.....you can either grab a bunch of free agents and using the editor (in Commish mode) put them on your teams or you can fill the teams with fictional players. I now use fictional players and delete them at the end of the year - you will also have to fill your Short Season and Rookie teams but wait until after the draft to do that - watch that waiver wire! You will need a lot of warm bodies to get through year 1 Cheers! |

In regards to draft pick trading, I'd be careful having it enabled and also having free agent compensation on as well
I've never had a league where both are enabled, but I could see it potentially leading to some odd scenarios |
