Stars?

I am sure this answer is already here but i searched and couldn't find it. I am wondering how important the star ratings are, why they differ so greatly from scout to scout, and if it's possible for a player that has a potential of 2 stars to eventually have a potential of 4 or 5. I'm clueless as to how important the star ratings are but being a newbie to the game and baseball in general more or less, it's what i rely on. thanks in advance.

Star ratings are important, but not the end-all and be-all. I actually use the number rating system myself, because you get better data and because there's more differentiation.

Jumps (and crashes) in potential do happen. They aren't very common, but they do happen, and the amount of money you put into player development makes a difference.

Also, players with higher intelligence and work ethic personality ratings can have a greater potential boost, since they take good coaching better, and are harder workers.

Last year I used stars, this year I'm using numbers like Avindian stated because, to me, it's a clearer representation of your player's rating summary.

Oh, and for players with lower potential... Keep playing them, especially in the minors, if they can play several defensive positions, as players only develop in the minors if they play. You can build a few gems in the minors that way, and not have to rely on drafting high potential kids.

I started to figure out that stars were less important when I'd get my player development report and it would say something like:

Current Eye increases from 10 to 12
Potential Eye increases from 13 to 15
Potential Power increases from 15 to 16
Player rating goes from 3.0 stars to 2.5 stars

So...he's getting better, but his stars are decreasing? Maybe my scouts are just drunk.

The star rating is an amalgamation of the other metrics, so don't worry if the star rating is dropping. It usually means your scout is now getting a clearer image of the player's true potential. This occurs a lot for younger players.

Don't forget, how the player is playing also affects their overall star rating (although not, as far as I am aware, the potential star rating) if you have that option enabled.
