I see the Syrups and Pirates have a bunch of head to heads coming up over the next few days. Everybody on my team has been informed to wear extra long cleats due to the unusually sticky infield in Waffletown.
Should be some fun series

Sweet (no pun intended). Same division even.... should be a fun 19 game series this year.

The battle for the second wildcard is getting very interesting.
I'm fine if you continue keeping a stranglehold on the wildcard spot, just stop hitting walkoffs in extra innings against me. Send a memo to Cool Papa and Heilmann

what's sad is.. I didn't even realize I was in the WC spot until you mentioned it... just been glancing at the division standings to see me a very distant 3rd place....

Late in September, Waffletown brings aboard a new second baseman:

Red Schoendeinst (93)

Cecil Travis will shift to backup the infield positions along with Nellie Fox.

September 30, 2053:

Waffletown has an impressive game against Miami, and pulls off the rare feat of scoring at least one run in every inning (for a nice 3000 points to the war chest):

A familiar sound could be heard from the Waffletown clubhouse as the 2053 season came to a close, as champagne corks were jettisoned from their bottles in great quantities. The Syrups claimed the second wild card spot to punch their third consecutive post season birth at the Perfect tier.

"I don't think most of us even realized we were still in the race." said starting pitcher Max Lanier. "We were just looking at that massive gap between us and second place in our own division."

Lanier had his best season yet with the Syrups, leading the staff with 17 wins and 3.87 era.

At the plate, newcomer Red Schoendienst made his presence felt immediately, batting an impressive .469 in his 8 games. Management hopes his hot start continues into the post season.

Waffletown will face division rival the Moline Maroons in the wild card match. While the standings show a 25 game gap between the two teams, the Syrups are going into the game with a quiet confidence as the season series between the two was much closer than the standings reflect (Moline won the series 10 games to 9).

Good luck in the playoffs! I thought the Syrups and Pirates were pretty evenly matched up and I enjoyed reading all the box scores.
It was a fun season

Waffletown put up a solid fight in the wild card match, but fell short as Moline emerged victorious 3-2 in 12 innings.

Commiseration, my poor Brutes also suffered a 3-2 WC loss, except they died in the 5th inning and fanned away (futilely) for four more.

The two starting pitchers had exactly the same game score, and pitched very similar games...except his got the MVP.

C'est la vie.

yeah, it's always a crap-shoot in the wild card game.... I had Smoky Joe Wood pitching, went 7.2 innings, gave up 5 hits and 2 runs.... he had Tim Keefe who went 6 innings, with 3 hits and 2 runs.... so almost dead even there... ended up being who made the first (only) mistakes to cost them the game in extras....

Once the off-season began, management in Waffletown wasted no time in working on an upgrade for the squad for the next season. Joining the team will be a new ace (hopefully) starter:

Harry Brecheen (99)

to make room on the staff, Willis Hudlin will be sent to the reserves. A long-time member of the squad, Hudlin joined Waffletown during the 2022 season. During his 32 years with the team, Hudlin mainly served in specialist reliever role. He excelled in that position especially during the 2041 season at the top tier, where he finished the year with a microscopic 0.36 ERA in 24.2 innings.

Eddie Plank will shift from the starting staff to the bullpen and provide a solid left handed arm for the relief staff.

A rather uneventful season came to an end in Waffletown with a sub-500 finish and a only a ticket to be a spectator for the post season.

Management hopes the squad can return to form next season and shoot for their first ever top tier championship.

May 21, 2055:

On top of the strong outing from Harry Brecheen (complete game, 5 hit shutout), the hometown crowd at the Spile was treated to a milestone as the Syrups tallied their 3000th win in team history.

(and today's win pushed Waffletown into first place in the AC Central by 1 game)

Syrups bring aboard a new pitcher for the bullpen

-Red Faber (93) - 1922

to make room on the roster, Billy Pierce will be sent to the reserves.

(narrator's note: soooo freakin' close to the biggest score in Syrups history... just need one more player to finish off the CWS collection and bring aboard Big Ed Walsh)

Not since the early days of the franchise has Waffletown seen so many roster shifts in such a short period of time, but when extraordinary circumstances warrant such movement, the squad must adapt:

Joining the club:

SP - Ed Walsh (100) (and the first perfect rated card to play for Waffletown):
Walsh will step into the #1 starter position. Mort Cooper will shift to the bullpen; and Tiny Bonham will be sent to the reserves.

next up:

SP - Johnny Rigney (96): Rigney will take up residence in the bullpen to provide a solid relief arm for the club. Red Faber will be moved to the reserve roster (rather short stay for Red).

and finally....

SS - Luke Appling (99): Appling will slide into the lineup at third base, and long-time Syrup Freddie Lindstrom will move to the bench to backup the infield. Sammy Hughes will be sent to the reserves.

The champagne flowed freely in the clubhouse, and the celebration in the streets around the Spile went on into the wee hours of the night as Waffletown finished up their best regular season in team history with an impressive 107-55 record.

Leading the way from the plate was first baseman George Sisler, who won the team triple crown with his team leading home runs (24), rbis (128) and average (.336). When asked about his impressive performance this season, Sisler shook his head and deflected the praise.

"This season was all about the pitching. They carried us the whole way." Sisler remarked.

And he wasn't wrong. The team ranked 2nd overall in runs allowed and 2nd overall in starter's era. With the mid season addition of ace starter Ed Walsh (11-5, 3.64 era), Ed Brecheen and Smoky Joe Wood felt a bit of the pressure taken off of them and settled into a groove where they challenged each other throughout the year. When the dust settled, the team single season record for wins had been broken.... by both Brecheen (23-8, 2.64 era) and Wood (23-6, 2.76 era) as they tied with 23 wins apiece.

The pitching staff also set new team records for ERA (3.22), breaking the old mark of 3.44 set in 2037; a new low in runs allowed (560) and earn runs (518), breaking the old marks of 595/559 set in 2026; a new low in home runs allowed (82), breaking the old mark of 98 set in 2051; a new high in complete games (21), breaking the old mark of 15 set in 2025; and a new high in shutouts (21), breaking the old mark of 20 set in 2037.

Waffletown will face off against the AC West division champs, the York Yard Dawgz. The two teams met seven times, with York taking the series 5 games to 2; so the Syrups know that, despite their impressive 107 win season, they will have their hands full in the LDS.
