Favorite Sport?
I'm curious, what's your favorite sport and why?

Baseketballkey.
Actually it's baseball, and because if I gave myself over to the Jets/Knicks as well, I would be in an asylum by next fall. Actually it's because baseball is the most beautiful sport to me. Nothing will beat a perfectly executed 643 DP, or a perfect hit and run (sidebar: where the heck has the hit and run disappeared to, and can we bring it back somehow?). That perfect sequence watching a dominant pitcher (Harvey, Kershaw, Fernandez, etc...). The other sports are sports. Baseball is an obsession.

The Nets are a thing?
Mets/Jets/Knicks/Rangers has always been the sort of... default rooting interest. Yankees/Giants usually. Knicks too.

It depends, I think if you are my age, and I'm not even that old. I'm 34, I remember the days of Sportschannel in NY - and the teams on that channel were Mets, Nets, Islanders, and Devils. Then there was MSG, with Yankees, Knicks and Rangers.
Since the NFL was predominantly (even then) on national television, Mets fans always gravitated towards the Jets and Yankees, the Giants. So for me, I think the answer is yes, Mets and Jets fans are supposed to be Nets fans. But it may not all apply. Or if your parents were too cheap to pay for MSG (like mine), then the answer is probably really yes. Often, I think about if my parents just had paid for MSG, how many championships I would have seen? 5 Yankees and 4 Giants vs 1 Mets (I'm going to leave out hockey, since I don't really care about it anymore) |

For me, Baseball is up here ...
... and everything else bubbles around down here, with their relative positions dictated by how well Detroit teams are doing in them. |

Baseball is the first sport I followed as a kid and has remained my favorite. I love its long history (Ken Burns' "Baseball" documentary may have its corny moments, but I just love it anyway) and its sense of tradition.
I also love its quirky players. Where else could a one-handed athlete succeed at the pro level? Where else could players with so many wildly unorthodox styles still succeed as pros? And I love its funky rules. You can strike out but still end up on first base. You can get a hit and an out in the same at-bat. You can throw a no-hitter but lose the game. Etc. |

Was baseball for a long time from childhood, but soccer has passed it up in the last 4-5 years.

Baseball. For me it takes brains to watch baseball and keep track of all the stats baseball has vs other sports. Any idiot can watch football and know whats going on. What are the fielders doing when the pitcher is getting ready to throw the ball. What pitch did the PC/MGR or Catcher call that caused the pitch to be thrown belt high on the soon to be league MVP that caused my team to lose when he crushed it over the CF fence for a 700 foot dinger. The rare enjoyment of October Chicago baseball. My team winning a World Series in my lifetime, sweeping the 'Stros. Buerhle, Konerko, Big Hurt, Baines, Black Jack, Put it on the board, Yes!
No other sport has that. it doesn't help that I was spoiled from 1991 - 1998 with the best basketball player in my generation and watching Da Bulls is like watching paint dry now. Still not into NHL as much as I would like to be. Bears aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

I'm an American baseball nut, but I watched quite a bit of cricket when I was in Oceania this past March, and I really liked what I saw. I have been watching a fair amount of cricket since I have gotten back, on ESPN3 (or WatchESPN, whatever it's going by these days). Pretty entertaining, especially the T20.
Rugby league, I have zero interest in. |

In order top to bottom
Hockey - I prefer hockey for it's pace. Even when nothing is going on an lot is going on. Baseball - I breath some of the same sentiment that many younger fans do about baseball, Slow and boring. Football - has just blown up recently and even before this year I've been put off by players getting away with off field issues. I watched two games last year and this year will probably be less. I'll still follow it but they won't get any of my money. ( I know holier than though but I lived though lots of domestic abuse in foster care and my girlfriends mom was killed by her husband after years of abuse which my girlfriend also suffered though). Soccer - Soccer is interesting being 30 I'm right on the upper edge of people who grew up as soccer was expanding but it was never on tv and we don't have a local team. I do watch some Primer League games when I'm at a buddies house but that's about it. Basketball - A solo sport in a team game. Never really been a fan and with all the flopping and whining that is going on now it's become more of spectacle than a game. |

Rugby league, first for me. Cricket and baseball tied for second.

By tier:
Soccer Baseball F1 Rugby Union Basketball American Football Cricket Handball Le Mans - Prototype/GT racing Tennis Rugby League Hockey Golf I like even the bottom sports quite well, don't get me wrong, but the top three are my loves, the others are just "likes" that I follow as I have time and inclination. Baseball
Tennis Various Motorsports (too many to list individually) Hockey Then everything else is way lower. The NFL is probably in the mix somewhere right now, but only because Chip Kelly makes it watchable.
