You might get lucky and get a Rod Carew (82) though his last 5 is 5500PP right now. I value defense and have had good luck with Keith Hernandez. What level league are you in?

I'll stick with Carew though he's slightly above your limit though you easily could get lucky (there is one now that has a low starting amount well below the limit). Carew is the 15th 1Bman (based on offense) and the 14 above him are well above the limit of this post.

Record Breaker Carlos Delgado has been doing real work for me the past few years in Diamond.

I don't remember how much I spent on him but it wasn't that much.

My favorite players to play 1B on my team do not know how to play 1B when they join my team. This approach can increase the total options available to you, including many players that will end up being superior defensive options than anyone listed at 1B.

Yeah me too. Takes a little to get them to max defense, but usually in a month or so they are somewhat serviceable at least. Or you can take a guy like Yordan Alvarez, who is listed as an outfielder, but when you look he has higher rating (77 i think?) at 1B than outfield.

Another option you can do is have 2 firstbasemen - a lefty and a righty. for like 1-3k each and platoon them, keeping them under the OP 5k budget. There are plenty of cheap 1B who would fit the bill, who are good hitters vs LHP or RHP both not really both.

Cecil Fielder is a bona fide monster vs. LHP at the lower levels for around 1K, and I'm even using him in a platoon at the Perfect level now. Not great defense, but he won't kill you.

I can't see getting rid of my Carew anytime soon. He's amazing in my low HR, big gap and average for LHH park.

If you're going the platoon route on a budget, I would suggest Chris Colabelo.

Great vs LHP and can fill in as a backup OF on the depth charts against RHP
