Why I Ended the League When I Did

Created a completely fictional game (world and names), starting in the year 2000 (but based on 1990 stats, dynamically evolving the league). I simmed 25 years before taking over a team, my beloved Mele'Kiron Golden Crosses. It seemed appropriate to end it like this (and if you don't want to read the season recap, scroll to the bottom):

2112

We had no free agency issues and no Qualifying Offers to give. A record 12 players went to arbitration. Beforehand, we traded Elliott Boardman to Prokiev for pitching prospect Quince Dan Cragan, a young man with electric stuff.

OF Fjur Magnorsson (2586 hits, 513 homers) and Dannis Kantner (2325 hits, 487 homers) were elected to the Hall of Fame. It was Magnorsson’s first ballot, Kantner’s fourth.

In the spring, Netherkirth really wanted to get rid of SP Mengoroth Hardwater’s contract, so we took it. It wasn’t onerous, and at 28, he was at the top of his game. We gave up 26-year-old Daven Easting to get him, along with 2B Gabriel Heartbane.

Four of our players were listed in the Top 100 Prospects: P Massimo Corleone (5), SS Mercher CagMornian (6, despite being only 16), P Blaze RaeBrennan (9), and CF Matthis Nighteyes (10).

Experts predicted 121 wins on the backs of our insane pitching staff. April demonstrated that as we went 21-4, first in runs scored and against. We had a 14 game winning streak in May and ended the month at 44-10. Facitil Gray was making his rehab assignment to the minors, so we’d be truly thick with great starters when he came back. Unfortunately, he completed his rehab and then suffered another back injury and returned immediately to the DL.

At the break we were on an eight game streak which took us to 62-13. Pastorelli was leading in all the Triple Crown categories at .385/24/69. We were first in everything save stolen bases. Both Hardwaters (12-0/3.03) and Southwind (12-0/4.14) were undefeated. Beastmaster was 9-2/3.01, Barzini 8-2/3.42, and Rizzo 6-4/3.44. Victor Grammarian, who had taken over the closer’s role, had saved 25 games and had an ERA of 1.36.

The hitting slowed down in July and we had a pretty mediocre month. Still, we had a decent chance for Hardwaters, Beastmaster, and Southwind to all win 20.

We had clinched before mid-August, with no one else in the Division had a winning record. The injury troubles to the pitching staff were somewhat concerning. Gray had had an especially rough year, with three trips to the DL and multiple rehab assignments, which would eventually turn into five trips to the DL.

We cruised through September, resting all the regulars. Beastmaster failed in his last start to win his 20th game, but Hardwaters and Southwind had both won 22. Despite playing backups, we won 20 in a row going back into August and went 23-3 on the month of September. That accounted for a record of 131-31, the eighth time in team history we had topped the 130 mark, and the first since 2091. We finished first in all categories save stolen bases, in which we were second. Pastorelli didn’t win the Triple Crown, but he won the batting title at .367/40/123. Freebooter was in the 30/30 club again at .315/34/133/44 steals. Datini just missed, hitting .329/33/106 and stealing 29. Oakenshield’s production slipped to .288/27/101. Winemiller had his first 30-homer season at .264/30/72. Whitemane had another excellent campaign at .297/27/99. Jordan Breakstone hit only .214 but clubbed 35 round-trippers. Victor Grammarian set a new TBL record with 55 saves to go with his 0.93 ERA.

Emerson Long (SAL), Griffin Goodman (ASP), Victor Helios (GRM), and Aurilien Perri (LDW) had three-homer games. Goodman and Helios had seven RBI in theirs. Phila’Kiron’s Jamis Dimwold had the only no-hitter. Salmyr’s Zeth Mikerin had a 16 strikeout game.

Tulember, Pridion, and Loudwater all won OLD Divisions by comfortable margins. Salmyr won their last three in a row to take the wildcard from Goldfield by two games. Aspermond won 98 games and Thanator 105 to win the other OLD Divisions while Dardanov captured the wildcard.

It was the Bears’ first playoff appearance since 2092. The left side of their infield, 3B Dannis Escavalon (.268/30/106) and SS Vincent Cadet (.330/27/103) powered the offense. Landon Dan Cragan (19-8/3.95) was their ace.

RF Singer Clark homered off of Grammarian in the top of the ninth to break a 5-5 tie and send the Bears to an opening game win. Hardwaters pitched seven innings of three hit ball and the Crosses equalized, 5-2. Balim Ford, who had come to Dardanov from Aspermond in the regular season, held the Crosses to two runs over seven and the Bears took a 2-1 series lead, 4-2. Whitemane and Oakenshield both had four hits and the former homered twice and drove in five in a 12-5 rout to even the series and send it to a deciding game back at The Churchyard. Grammarian had trouble closing out a game again, allowing two runs in the top of the ninth, but Cliff Halfelven hit a pinch hit walk-off in the bottom of the ninth to send the Crosses to the LCS.

There, we’d face Aspermond, after Thanator was once again upset in the Divisional round. Mostly the same team we had seen in the Divisional Round last year, the Thoroughbreds had upgraded at 1B with Jonval Adonwys (.273/43/111) to go along with LF Griffin Goodman’s .277/44/136, leading the league in homers and RBI. Ravelainen FA Ulfinn Thorfinsson paced the team in wins at 17-11/4.52, tied with lefty Brad Whiteman (17-11/4.00), who they had signed as a FA from Prokiev.

Freebooter homered twice and had three RBI as the Crosses scored early and often in a 9-1 win in the opener. Hardwaters went out after 2.2 with an oblique strain; Barzini pitched 5.1 great relief innings to pick up the win. Rizzo was strong through eight and Pastorelli and Datini both homered as the Crosses took a 2-0 lead, 4-2. Beastmaster and Thorfinsson locked up in a pitching duel that the Ravelainen won 2-1 to get the Thoroughbreds back in the series. More top shelf pitching from both sides in Game 5, with Whiteman allowing only three hits, but two of them homers to Winemiller and Whitemane, and the Crosses took a 3-1 LCS lead with a 3-1 win. Datini homered among his three hits and drove in four in the 8-2 win in the clincher. It was on to face OLD powerhouse defending champs Tulember, making their fifth World Series appearance in six years.

Strong from top to bottom in the order, the Explorers were led by former Cross RF Gregor Mountainside (.281/39/108), one of four players with 30+ homers. They featured two top flight arms on the mound, Spencer Procaccini (20-5/2.80) and Davos Hartman (16-5/2.80). Former Cross Spencer Stonebrook had 41 saves out of the bullpen. In the non-DH park, Freebooter would move over to CF and Datini would play LF, with both getting defensive replacements late in games.

The Crosses broke open a close game with a six run fifth, a Whitemane grand slam being the big blow, en route to a 13-3 win in the kickoff game. Freebooter and Pastorelli homered and Beastmaster allowed only four hits through 8.1 and the Crosses went up two games with a 7-2 win. It was all Hardwaters in Game 3, pitching a three-hit complete game shutout, walking one and striking out nine, Oakenshield’s double in the bottom of the first driving in the game’s only run. Southwind was cruising into the seventh but then gave up four runs and suffered a back injury, the Explorers staying alive, 4-3. Five different players had two hits apiece and the Crosses broke open a one-run ballgame with five runs in the bottom of the sixth, en route to an 8-3 win and third championship in five years, their sixth in eight, and their unprecedented 50th in TBL’s 112 year history.

Moments after the last out, the sky darkened with the appearance of a fleet of great starships. A powerful voice boomed over the stadium PA:

“Attention all planets of the solar federation. We have assumed control. We have assumed control. We have assumed control.”

Love the names in this one.
Freebooter is a particular favorite.
Though the English major in me is also pretty fond of Grammarian.

Then you'll love that Grammarye is one of the city names, and since the world's only institution of higher learning is there and is rumored to be a haven for sorcerers, the team is called the Wizards. The team went to the the World Series only three times in 112 years, winning but once, in 2085, upsetting our beloved Mele'Kiron Golden Crosses.
