What is your biggest *strength* as an OOTP player?

Perseverance.

Picking high potential prospects that either flame out or "pursue other careers"

1. Killer AAA teams

2. Finding decent middle-round talent in the draft

Managing the financial aspects of the game. My teams always show a profit and have budget room available for trades and free agents.

In before anyone else says it: Commissioner Mode

Truthfully, I think it's minor league system development. I've had a number of years where all my minor league teams won their leagues. Not sure it's translated all that well into the majors, but seems like the right way to do it.

I have been able to find "failed" MLB cup of coffee or AAA starters and convert them into dominant relief pitchers. I usually take a flier on two or three 24-26yr olds and bring them to Spring Training and use them as relievers, then if they don't blow me away in Spring Training, I force them to be RP in the minors and I usually find 1 guy every year or two that turns into an Andrew Miller type reliever.

Interesting strategy. Going to see if it'll work in earlier eras like the 80s.

I'd be interested to hear if it works in earlier eras. My latest "discovery" was Tanner Scott, I got him as part of a trade with Baltimore (I traded for Adam Jones) and Scott was a throw in because he was a walk machine, had something like 78 walks vs 87 Ks in 107 innings at AAA. The next season he opened at AAA for me in the bullpen and was lighting it up, so when an injury happened to Miller, I brought him up and he still had some control issues but had a respectable 2.10 ERA in 51 games and struck out 86 and walked 37 in 59 innings pitched.

I have also scoured the Indy Leagues and have purchased guys who are starters and have sub 2.00 ERAs and they become solid relief pitchers. Charles Brewer was one I grabbed and was very good for two seasons before a shoulder injury put him out for 7 months and at 35, I just let him walk after the season was over.

My strength is in managing my games. I play them all out. I know my players and who could do what. I play with historical line ups in my past seasons, but once the game starts, it's all me. Many times I've won games I probably should have lost just on my moves alone. Of course the player has to help some, too. lol

Devolping hitters.

Especially left handed outfielders... typically have 5 at a time that can play in the majors

I seem to be pretty good at putting together a team with decent substitutes for injured players. It seems like I spend more time worrying about my second string middle infielder than my starters.

Having fun and not be afraid to try something different, OOTP has taught me, out of necessity, many new computer skills but I am still a Neanderthal.

Making 40 save games per OOTP.

For real though, I have ~15 so far on OOTP 19 and have had at least 20 times where I had an idea, started making a league, then gave up while doing the settings. It's almost always player salary or PCR settings that get me.

Finding pitchers in rounds 25-35 of the draft that turn in to ML players, even if it's just a mop up RP. I have no luck with hitters though.

Plucking underappreciated minor leaguers from other teams in trades that on paper are not unfair and developing them into players much better than they started out as.

Unfortunately I think I am too good at this so I've had to force myself to stop all the trading.

I haven't played in a few weeks, gotta check out that new patch!

long-term payroll management

i can always supplement what i cannot grow with enough FA contracts worth paying and without sacrificing any quality elswhere on the field to form a WS-caliber team barring massive injuries.

real cause: a consistently high revenue and budget allows it all to happen. money is the basis of everything one way or another.

I'm sure you're all over Handsome Monica and Owen Sharts if you're playing 2018 MLB games then
