Are these guys HOF'rs?
Ive started my league HOF and there are 2 guys that are difficult decisions.
Jesus Morales - 2B/SS - 12 Seasons 6 time all-star. 3 time MVP and 2 time world series champion. Had a productive career but had 3 extraordinary seasons at age 34/35/36 to win 3 straight MVP awards. His overall career stats are not mind blowing though. Runs: 1060 Hits: 2055 HR: 282 RBI: 1026 SB: 37 AVG: .312 OBP: .387 SLG: .508 He seemed to be on winning teams very often and his playoff stats are pretty awesome. in 79 Career playoff games, he had 54 runs, 13 HR's, 57 RBI with a .368 AVG and .968 OPS. -------------------------------------------------------- Francisco Gallegos - RF - 15 Seasons 6 time all-star. 2 stats stand out for Gallegos, Runs and SB's, where he is 2nd and 1st respectively all time. He had 4 30-30 seasons, but his mediocre career AVG and OBP are what make him difficult to induct. Runs: 1480 Hits: 2199 HR: 369 RBI: 1179 SB: 679 AVG: .257 OBP: .323 SLG: .473 He is the best speed/power player in the leagues history, he had 11 seasons with atleast 20 HR's and 13 seasons with atleast 40 SB. |

Fielding stats and awards for Morales? Gallegos makes it for sure imo.

I voted for morales. For me the fact that he was a 2b/ss and had been a mvp 3 times was the reason.
What about gold gloves for both. If Gallegos has gold gloves then that would make him look better. |

I've mentioned this in a previous post I believe but I think it applies here as well,if a player is borderline, then its best to keep him out rather then in.The Hall Of Fame is for no- brainers, guys who dominated their position for a span of 10 years at least,JMO

I would select Morales because of the BA and his power for a middle infielder.
With Gallegos you have a good, but not great player. Gallegos overall stats kind of remind me of Bobby Bonds. A good player, even close to HOF numbers a few seasons but overall just not good enough for the Hall. |

In my opinion, an OPS of .895 for a middle infielder is excellent production, very worthy of a HOF player. With Gallegos, I feel I don't have enough info. His OPS is rather pedestrian, but if he were a great fielder I could get past it.

You don't (fool) with the Jesus ...
... to quote the Big Lebowski.
Morales has an unusually (almost historically) high OPS for a middle infielder. Gallego, on the other hand, is a pretty pedestrian RF with a lifetime .257 average and not a lot else except SB and somewhat fewer than 400 HR. Welcome to Cooperstown, Mr. Gallego. Here's your ticket and your change. Don't miss the guided tour in 15 minutes ... |

What era are we talking about? If it's the current era than neither comes close.

It all depends on your current league and how they relate to other players who have played before them.

Thanks for the responses. Just to clarify, Neither player won a gold glove but they were both above average fielders for most of their career.
The era in term of statistics I'm using is 1970's or so (League ERA's are usually 4.10). So offense is definitely slightly harder to come by. |
