When to add minor leagues?

Hi!

I am new to OOTP and I am just starting up a historical sim where I plan to sim the whole way from 1871 to modern day. I know that teams did not have full minor league systems back in the day, so when do you add those teams so that things stay true historically? If you choose to auto-expand, will the minors add themselves or not?

As far back as 1871 there were "minor leagues". The first affiliation with a major league team was not until 1916 however. Many minor leagues and teams were unaffiliated until the late 1950's.

you can start with full minors if you want and just check off the 'fill with ghost players' box..

or what I usually do is just go with the reserve list and monitor that over the years. Once each time has enough players to field a full minor league club, I'll manually expand the league and add the AAA league. (Then go for more years before expanding to AA once the AAA level has enough to split into two full teams).
