Balanced Schedule with Interleague?

If you choose a balanced league schedule AND interleague play, will each team play each team from the opposing league or will it just be a balanced league schedule with interleague similar to how MLB does it?

It may depend somewhat on the particulars of your league. Note that the first thing OOTP does is check the Schedules folder to see if there is an already existing schedule file which matches the parameters of the league. If it finds one, it uses it. If it can't then it'll create a schedule from scratch. In the Mods forum there is a thread filled with a ton of custom-made schedules. It is worth checking out because such hand-crafted schedule files are almost certainly to be better than the ones the game creates (automated schedule creation is a complicated beast, so the one in OOTP is fairly basic).

What preconditions are there for it?

I tried to set up a league with 30 teams in 5/5/5 per conference and it wouldn't let me advance because there was not an even number in each Subleague. I figured with Interleague play it would match, but it doesn't.

Is there a way around it (like somehow constructing a schedule)?

It's been awhile since I looked at it, but I know there has to be a match in the size and alignment of the league, the number of games scheduled, whether interleague play is on or off, and whether the schedule is balanced or not. If what is set in the schedule file does not exactly match what the league is set to the schedule file won't import.

You can't set up that scenario straight away as OOTP cannot generate a fictional schedule for that alignment. You can get around that by creating a 16-14 arrangement, generating the schedule, realigning the league, and then importing a custom schedule file. (With MLB moving to a 15-15 setup, there'll be a real MLB schedule to use next year.)

Check the Mods forum. There are a huge number of hand-crafted schedule files available for use. Peruse through the (long) list and you may well find one that suits your needs.
