After sleeping through most of the summer, Waffletown finally woke up in August and remembered that the season was still going on. The team made a solid run to go 19-9 in August, but unfortunately their division rivals from Palolo had an equally solid month, and the Syrups only managed to gain 2 games in the standings. They sit 9 games back, but do hold down the top wild card spot, so a post season birth is still a possibility.

On the mound, Mort Cooper has put on an impressive show so far this season, going 18-8 with a 3.42 era while pitching out of the 3rd slot in the rotation. Eddie Plank has turned things around after his 2-9 start and now sits at 10-13 in his rookie season.

"Just need to make the playoffs..." first baseman Mule Suttles commented to a reporter. "...after that, anything can happen."

While it wasn't what management, fans or the team expected for their first run in the Diamond league, when the regular season came to an end, Waffletown celebrated a post season birth as they secured the top wild card spot.

Waffletown will face Miko Bros Market in the wild card game. The two teams met seven times during the season, with Miko Bros taking the series 4-3.

No team batting/pitching/fielding records were set this season; though there was one other team record set: most lifetime games against a single opponent (58) vs Palolo; and most lifetime losses against a single opponent (29) also Palolo.

At the plate, Cool Papa Bell had a solid season in the lead-off spot, batting .305 with 104 runs scored and 70 stolen bases. Sliding Billy Hamilton also had an impressive season on the basepaths, swiping 80 bases while only being caught 10 times. Mule Suttles did his best to drive in Bell and Hamilton, with 102 RBIs to go along with his 19 home runs.

On the mound, Mort Cooper settled into the 3rd slot in the starting rotation and had one of his best seasons yet with the team, going 20-9 with a 3.72 ERA and 203 strikeouts.

Waffletown celebrated a thrilling wild-card victory over Miko Bros, as the Syrups scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th to get the 5-4 walk-off win.

Waffletown moves on to face division rival Palolo in the LDS. The two teams met 19 times during the regular season with Palolo winning the series 10-9.

"It's gonna be a dog fight.... no pun intended." said reliever Paul Dean.

A subdued crowd slowly shuffled out of The Spile as Waffletown fell to Palolo in 3 straight games to bow out of the 2032 Diamond league playoffs. Despite an impressive performance from third baseman Freddie Lindstrom (5 hits, 3 home runs, 5 rbis, .357 avg), the rest of the team couldn't get anything going against Palolo.

"To be honest, I didn't think we'd even get this far." Lindstrom said in a post-game interview. "But now we know we can compete at this level, we'll be ready for next season."

The new Diamond league season is underway and Waffletown is off to another solid start, sitting just a half game back in the AC Central division at 16-9. After a similar start last season, the team is hoping to avoid the prolonged slump that plagued the team last year.

Mort Cooper is off to another great start in the #3 slot of the starting staff, with his 4-1 record and 2.30 era. At the plate, Sliding Billy Hamilton leads the team (and sits 3rd overall in the league) with his .340 batting average (thanks to a 13 game hitting streak to start the year). The rest of the offense is clicking as well with a league leading .295 average and .363 on base percentage; and 4th ranked 130 runs scored.

With two months down in the season, the mood in the Waffletown clubhouse is sky high as the team is coming off what might be their best April-May combo in their history. After a solid start to April, the team kept their focus and tore through the competition in May (19-8); and sit atop the AC Central with a league-best 34-18 record.

"Feels like we can do no wrong..." said right-fielder Billy Hamilton. "...but it's like that when things are going your way."

Hamilton sits atop the team's batting average leaders with a .317 average; followed closely by Cool Papa Bell and Johnny Pesky (both at .315) and Mule Suttles at .314. The offense as a whole is performing like a well oiled machine, leading the league in batting average, on base percentage and runs scored (something they've struggled to do in season's past).

On the mound, Tiny Bonham has been anything but small in his performance so far out of the 4th slot in the rotation, with an unblemished 6-0 record and 3.98 era.

Waffletown was well represented at the 2033 All-Star game, with four players making the trip:

RF - Sliding Billy Hamilton (3rd appearance)
C - Ernie Lombardi (5th appearance)
SP - Mort Cooper (3rd appearance)
SS - Johnny Pesky (3rd appearance)

and for the first time since the 2025 mid-season classic, a Waffletown player took home the All-Star MVP award. Johnny Pesky had a solid game, going 2 for 4, including a double that drove in both runs of the 2-1 victory.

Management hopes the team can continue their solid play into the second half of the season and avoid any prolonged slumps that have plagued the team in season's past.

At the plate, the offense continues to hum along, ranking 1st in average and 2nd in on base percentage and runs scored. At the top of the lineup, Bell and Hamilton are doing their part of setting the table, scoring 148 runs between them; and Heilmann and Suttles are taking care of business driving them in, with 160 combined rbis.

With the final month of the season upon them, Waffletown hopes they can keep humming along through September and the post season. After their solid start in April (14-9) and May (19-8), the team tried to stay focused to avoid their usual summer slump. They backslid a bit in June (12-14), but managed to avoid to duplicate that in July (15-12). As the temperature heated up in August, so did the Syrups as they had their best month yet this season (20-8). With 29 games remaining, Waffletown sits atop the NC Central division with a 12 game lead at 81-52.

"It's been a real team effort..." said starter Tiny Bonham. "...no matter who we throw out there, we feel confident about our chances."

Looking at the league leaderboards, it mirrors Bonham's comments, as the only members of Waffletown that appear there are Harry Heilmann (1st in RBIs with 101), Cool Papa Bell (1st in stolen bases with 60), and Lefty Gomez (1st in strikeouts with 208).

While management does have a small war chest of funds available for purchases off the waiver wire, they will most likely stand pat with the current squad as not to mess with the chemistry.

For the eighth time in their history, and the fourth consecutive time, the champagne corks popped in the clubhouse at the end of the season as the Waffletown Syrups clinched the AC Central division and a birth in the Diamond league post season. While management tried to temper expectations after the promotion to Diamond league, the team has responded well and reached the post season in both seasons at that level.

One team record fell this season as the offense broke the old record of runs scored (previously 800 set in 2025), by scoring 830 this season.

The table setters at the top of the lineup (Bell and Hamilton) swiped 69 and 68 bases respectively and scored 108 and 113 runs each. With the two speedsters on the basepaths, the 3rd and 4th batters, Heilmann and Suttles took full advantage driving in 122 and 119 runs respectively (and Suttles scored 104 runs of his own).

On the mound, Tiny Bonham tied Tex Carleton's team undefeated streak (set in 2023) of 14 games.

Waffletown will head to Annapolis to face the Atoms in the LDS. The two teams met 7 times during the regular season, with Waffletown taking the series 4 games to 3.

Waffletown knew the ALDS would be a tough battle as the 7 game regular season series between themselves and Annapolis was a tight affair; and the series didn't disappoint to that effect, as the two teams went the distance with Annapolis emerging victorious 3 games to 2.

"Can't say we aren't disappointed in the outcome..." said left fielder Lefty O'Doul, "...we had the upper hand after the win in game 3 and just needed to close it out, but just didn't take care of business."

Management will review the success and failure of the season as they take stock of available players on the waiver wire and determine if a new addition might be in order to help the team take that next step.

With Paul Dean struggling to adapt to the increased competition of the Diamond league, management was on the lookout for a new reliever to bolster the bullpen. The scouting staff scoured the independent leagues for talent, hoping to find a diamond in the rough. As the last game of April wrapped up and the fans shuffled out of The Spile, they were treated to a rather odd sight, as a horse and carriage trotted up to the ballpark. A gentleman with a large mustache tipped his hat to the crowd as he climbed down and tugged his rucksack from the carriage and headed into the park. He would be introduced to the fans the next day:

RP - Jack Stivetts (1889) - 88

Management hopes Stivetts will fit right in with the team as he is about as old timey as you can get. Management would also like to thank Paul Dean for his many years of service to the team.

edit: narrator commentary - not knowing much about Stivetts, I enjoyed reading up on his career and checking out his stats. In the narrator's humble opinion, Stivetts ratings as a batter here are criminally underrated, as he was quite a good hitter; and set a single season record for most home runs by a pitcher (7) in 1890 that stood until 1931. His 35 career home runs still tie him for 4th all time among pitchers (though the official record books put him at 21 as a pitcher, with 14 hit while playing other positions).

One month into the 2034 season, Waffletown is off to an up-n-down start but sits just a half game back of the NC West division lead at 14-11. After reaching the post season the past two seasons in Diamond league, the team knows they can compete at this level, so the mood in the clubhouse is a confident one.

While the bulk of the pitching staff (both starters and relievers) have struggled to find their groove, Eddie Plank has been on fire with a 4-1 record and minuscule 1.66 era to lead the team (and win the April pitcher of the month).

At the plate, Cool Papa Bell got off to a red hot start with a 15 game hitting streak in the first 16 games. He has since cooled off a bit, but is still batting a solid .333 at the top of the lineup. Freddie Lindstrom has also had a solid start, leading the team with a .344 average, and sits just one rbi behind Mule Suttles for the team lead there.

More narrator commentary regarding the shafting of Stivetts offensive abilities.... just a comparison chart between Stivetts and two contemporaries also in the game (John Clarkson and Tim Keefe) when it comes to their real life career batting stats and their PT offensive ratings.

His career average is over 100 points higher than Keefe and 80 points higher than Clarkson, yet his contact rating is barely above theirs; with more career home runs than either, his power rating of 1 (compared to 50 for Clarkson and 20 for Keefe) almost seems like a glaring mistake that warrants correction....with more career walks than Clarkson, his eye rating shouldn't be exactly the same and should be closer to Keefe than not; and with less than half the career strikeouts, he definitely shouldn't have an avoid K of 10 when the other two are at 35.

As the season rolls into the dog days of summer, Waffletown hopes their play will heat up along with the temperatures as they have slipped to 3rd place, 7.5 games back of the division lead; and a half game back of the 2nd wild card spot.

For both the offense and defense, it's been a rather mediocre season all around as the batting and pitching basically all rank middle of the pack across the board.

Management is keeping a close eye on the waiver wire, as the team's war chest for improvements is slowly approaching a point where they might be able to afford a solid upgrade if the price is right.

For the first time in their 15 year history, Waffletown managed to go an entire season without having a single sub-500 month. They finished with a team record 97 wins, which was good enough for 3rd best in the league. Unfortunately for the Syrups, the second best team was also in the NC West division, so Waffletown ended up in second place with the top wild card spot.

Waffletown will host the Jackson Generals in the wild card game. The two teams met seven times during the regular season, with Jackson winning the series 4-3.

Two team records were set in 2034: most team saves (66), and fewest home runs allowed (104), which ties the low mark set in 2026.

For single-season individual team records, new marks were set for runs scored (Sliding Billy Hamilton - 120), RBIs (Harry Heilmann - 133), OBP (Hamilton - .407), Games pitched (Wilcy Moore - 75), Saves (Moore - 51), and Strikeouts (Lefty Gomez - 264); and Harry Heilmann set a new RBI streak record (9 games).

while management is definitely pleased with the performance of the team this season, there are still areas in need of improvement. With the focus on improving the offensive output, the defense has suffered greatly (zone rating of -39.1 this season; which is the worst in team history; and an all time high of 93 errors). Management will watch the free agent list during the off season for any potential upgrades that might improve the defensive side without sacrificing much on the offense.

Waffletown takes care of business in the wild card game with a 6-3 victory over Jackson to advance to the LDS.

The Syrups will face division rival and NC top seed Green Lake in the division series. The two teams are quite familiar with each other as they met 19 times during the regular season, with Green Lake winning the series 12-7.

Another post season came to an early end for Waffletown as they went down to Green Lake 3 games to 1.

"Frustrating part is we had leads in games 1 and 3 and let them both slip away." said designated hitter Harry Heilmann. "All we had to do was hold down the fort and we'd be moving on."

In the early morning hours of Friday, June 1st, the Waffletown GM was just waking up with a cup of coffee while he scanned over the current offerings on the waiver wire. He spotted a name of a player on his watch-list, took a moment to mull over the cost, and pulled the trigger. Joining the squad will be:

OF/IF - Martin Dihigo (peak) - 89, for 20500 points.

With Lefty O'Doul struggling at the plate this season (not to mention his less than stellar defensive abilities), management has decided to send him to the reserve roster for the time being. Sliding Billy Hamilton will shift to left-field, and Cool Papa Bell will move to right-field, as Dihigo will take up residence in center. Management hopes his skills as a defender will help shore up the team on that side, and any extra contributions he can provide on the offensive side will be a bonus.

While O'Doul will be sent to the reserves, he could be recalled as needed for his offensive skills. O'Doul joined the squad just before the 2022 season. In his 14 years with Waffletown, he played in 2134 games, with 8234 at bats, 2255 hits, 376 doubles, 271 home runs, 1267 rbis, a .274 average, 1135 runs scored and a 35.5 war.

As the season hits the All-Star break, Waffletown fans are reveling in their team's success in the first half. After a strong start in April (18-9), the Syrups stepped up the pace ever so slightly in May (19-8). They slipped back a bit in June (15-11), but still kept over the 500 mark for the month. As most of the team kicks back for the break, Waffletown sits in first place in the NC East division with a 61-34 record.

"We got a good chemistry going in the clubhouse." said manager Joe Shlabotnik. "Gonna enjoy the run as long as it lasts."

The Syrups will send six members to the mid-season classic:

SP - Lefty Gomez (1st appearance)
SP - Eddie Plank (2nd appearance)
SP - Mort Cooper (4th appearance)
C - Ernie Lombardi (7th appearance)
RF - Cool Papa Bell (3rd appearance)
DH - Harry Heilmann (1st appearance)

In an unexpected move, Paul Dean was recalled from the reserve roster and placed in the bullpen; and Claude Passeau was shifted back into the starting rotation in the 5th position, after former starter Ted Lyons was sold to another club.

"Sometimes you just get an offer you can't refuse." said the Waffletown GM. "We wish Ted all the luck in the world with his new club."
