The Southern League
The Teams:
Alexandria Aces 1977-1716 Baton Rouge Artillery 1841-1851 Beaumont Crush 1827-1863 Biloxi Cardinals 1947-1970 Birmingham Slammers 1973-1718 Corpus Christi Beach Bums 1744-1947 Fort Worth Mustangs 1882-1808 Jackson Browns 1771-1917 Lake Charles Pirates 1747-1943 Mobile Hustlers 1934-1757 Shreveport Captains 1820-1871 Texarkana Grasshoppers 1831-1857 12 team League. One Subleague. No Divisions(1951-1960 league was split into two 6 team divisions). 14 game round robin schedule. Three teams qualify for the postseason. Team that finishes the regular season with the best record, earns a spot in the Southern League championship series. This team also earns home field advantage in the best of seven 2/3/2 series. The teams that finish 2nd and 3rd earn a trip to the Southern League wildcard series. Best of seven 2/3/2 I allow historical modifiers to update yearly for historical accuracy. Started in 1947. My league is currently 09/10/1970. I plan on importing modifiers yearly until I finish the 1986 season. From that point forward, I will use a random number generator to select a season between 1978-1986. If for example the generator selects 1980, I will then use 1980's modifiers for the season. When that season is over, I will use 1981 for the following season, 1982 the next and so on, until I finish 1986 again. I will then pull out the number generator again. Once I reach 86 league strategy will freeze My financial are that of 1947 and will be 1947 forever. I use free agency, but no compensation. 5 round drafts each year. Go Lake Charles Pirates!!!
Joey Bats with the all-time OBP record and single season record. Really sad for me to see how far he's fallen off IRL since 2015. Shannon Stewart leads in single season SB with just 56? Wow! Wait 'til you hit the 1980s. Any fast guys are gonna hammer that record like a pinata. Jim Clancy with 181 walks in a single season? How many innings did he pitch? Oof! Looks like Mario Soto was a beast in your league. Is he still pitching or has he wound it down? What are his numbers like? Ah Ken Phelps...One of the original "3-true outcome" guys. It's too bad he didn't get more playing time IRL. Could've been even more of a beast than he was. I guess your HoF must be in it's very early stages (23 seasons so far). How's it looking? |

Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing that stolen base record obliterated. I've only had 3 players so far reach 50. Stewart, already mentioned. Chone Figgins stole 55 in 1969 and Hal Chase stole 50 in 1960. Jim Clancy pitched 238.2 innings in 1956, the year he walked 181. He went 14-18 that year with a 4.83 ERA. Jim is still active at 38. He's been a bullpen pitcher for the last 5 season. He is 180-164, 4.03. 1245 career walks vs 1678 strikeouts. 96 ERA+ 20.0 WAR. Clancy has pitched 19 seasons, pitching for 8 of the 12 Southern League franchises. Ah Mario Soto, a poster child for one year recalc. Soto was part of the 1957 draft and started his career at the age of 19, pitching for the Baton Rouge Artillery. Soto found his groove at the age of 23, 1962. He went 10-8, 2.60 with a 171 strikeouts. The following season 1963, he went 12-15, 3.03 with a league best 328 strikeouts. 1964 would prove to be Soto's best, 16-13, 2.15(league best), 289 innings pitched(league best), only 59 walks and 376 strikeouts he had a WHIP of 0.88 and a 171ERA+ and 13.6 WAR(league best). 1965, 17-10, 2.25, 272 strikeouts and another sub 1 WHIP, 0.99. 16-12, 2.86, 226 strikeouts in 1966. Then the wheels start coming off the bus. 10-13 4.33 in 1967. 2-5 4.50 during the year of the pitcher. He is still active, but is on his teams reserve roster. Career 99-93, 2.94 1807 strikeouts. The Hall only has 3 members, all pitchers at this time, Clayton Kershaw, Pedro Martinez and Felix Hernandez. We should get our first position player real soon Puig is now eligible. He missed the cut on his first ballot, but he is a sure thing. Duke Snider is also coming soon. Another sure thing. Last edited by David Watts; 03-10-2018 at 11:35 AM. |

Friday September 25th 1970
The final weekend of the season is upon us. Fort Worth has long clinched and now awaits who they will face in the Southern League Championship Series. Mobile clinched the first wildcard spot a few days back. Meanwhile, Alexandria and Birmingham are deadlocked with 3 games left to play. Both have identical 84-67 records. Both teams are finishing their seasons on the road. Alexandria in in Texarkana against the Grasshoppers. Birmingham in Shreveport against the Captains. I'm giving the Aces the edge here, as Texarkana has had a rough go of it this season. Shreveport was in contention for a wildcard for much of the season before fading over the last month and half. In the early days of the league, Birmingham and Alexandria forged a strong dislike for each other. Birmingham would win 4 rings in 5 years. Fort Worth will be making their 3rd straight appearance in the championship series. Question now is, will they end up facing the Mobile Hustlers for the 3rd straight season. The Triple Crown is also on the line with 3 games remaining. Ken Griffey Jr. (FW) is hitting .361, just 2 better than Greg Luzinski(BIR) .359. Junior has 44 home runs, 2 more than Tom Brunansky's(BR) 42. He has 128 RBI, 7 more than Tom Brunansky 119. Last edited by David Watts; 03-10-2018 at 10:58 PM. |

Friday is in the books, Alexandria crushed Texarkana 15-5.Elam Vangilder got the win to even his record at 7-7. The Aces banged out 17 hits. Cool thing is, Hank Aaron is finally back off the DL. Aaron hasn't played since 06/27. Aaron made his presence felt right away going 2-4 with 2 RBI and 2 walks.
Birmingham had a 3-0 lead over the Captains in the 4th inning, but then the wheels came off the bus. The Slammers Dave Dravecky gave up 5 runs, 4 in the 4th and 1 in the 5th. Birmingham would end up losing 8-3. Owney Carroll picked up his 16th win for the Captains. Ken Griffey Jr. went 3-4 raising his average to .364. Luzinski went hitless and is now at .357. |

How big are your reserve rosters and how many free agents are kicking around in the league? I wish I could limit reserve rosters to 10-12. When the number of free agents gets too high, over 125-150 I expanded my unaffiliated AAA leagues. I may start reducing the size of the draft class to control the free agent pool.

It just wasn't meant to be for the Birmingham Slammers. Alexandria just won their 8th straight game in comeback fashion 6-5. The Aces fell behind 5-0 when Wil Myer smashed a grand slam off of Mike Minor. Minor stayed in the game, lasting 7.1 innings before giving way to Javy Guerra. It was at the point the Alexandria's offense came to life. The Aces would pull within 2, scoring 2 in the top of the 4th and 1 more in the 5th. The teams muster no more runs till the top of the 9th inning. The Aces would get to reliever Fernando Cabrera for 3 runs. The winning hit was a double off the bat of Ed Kranepool off of 2 time reliever of the year Sergio Romo. Kranepool went 4-5 with a home run and 2 RBI in the game.
Over in Shreveport, the Birmingham bats just couldn't get it going against 12-15 Steve Kline. Kline allowed just 1 run over 7 innings with 4 strikeouts to put an end to any hope the Slammers had of playing a big game on Sunday. Dave Goltz 14-14 took the loss for Birmingham. Dave went 7, allowing 5 runs, 4 earned, striking out 6 and walking 3. Birmingham's Greg Luzinski went 0-4 once again, lowering his average to .354. Ken Griffey went 4-5 with 4 RBI, hitting his 5th triple on the season. Ken is now hitting .369 with 132 RBI. I think the crown is his, barring a monster final day for Tom Brunansky. |

What a final weekend for Ken Griffey Jr. With all my attention on the Alexandria/Birmingham race, I didn't notice the Mustangs had a makeup game on the schedule. Of course, the AI trotted out one of their best pitchers to pitch a meaningless game against Texarkana...Ugh! Over the last four games of the season, Junior went 11-17, 1 double, 1 triple, 1 home run and 8 RBI.
The Triple Crown is on it's way to Fort Worth. Griffey finished the season hitting .371, 45 home runs and 136 RBI. Junior managed all this while only getting to the plate 46 times over the first 2 months of 1970. Fort Worth finished the season with 3 of the top 5 on the ERA list, Earl Wilson, 2.73, best in the league. 2.79 Frank Viola, 2nd and Mike McCormick 2.92, good for 5th. They also had 3 pitchers finish in the top 5 on the Wins list. Earl Wilson won 20, Frank Viola and Kevin Tapani 18, while Mike McCormick went a pedestrian 16-9 |

Jorge Orta, Lou Gehrg and Josh Willingham were the hitting stars for Mobile in the games against Alexandria. Gerry Janeski won 3 games against the Aces, while Van Mungo had a 1.27 ERA over 21 innings
Hank Aaron hit 4 home runs off Mobile pitching during the season. Mike Minor went 2-2 vs the Hustlers with a 1.99 ERA over 31.2 innings. |

First game, October 1st: Alexandria vs Mobile 7:05
Fritz Peterson (15-12) vs Gerry Janeski (13-5) Oh man do I love postseason baseball. Alexandria takes game one 3-2 in 10. The Aces got on the board first in the top of the 3rd, when Ed Kranepool tripled off of Gerry Janeski and Hank Aaron flew out deep to left to drive in the run. Jim Presley the very next batter slammed a home run to left center. Aces 2-0. Fritz Peterson the Aces pitcher would not yield a hit till the bottom of the 4th, a Kirby Puckett single. He kept the Hustlers scoreless for 8 innings. In fact, it was the 8th before the Hustlers got their 2nd hit. Peterson pitched to two batters in the bottom of the ninth, striking out Jorge Orta to start the inning, but then yielded a single to Tommy Holmes. That was all for Fritz as the Aces manager decided to bring in Jesse Crain. Crain would not do the job. He quickly allowed a single to Kirby Puckett. Got Lou Gehrig to fly out to centerfield. Followed by back to back singles to Frankie Hayes and Doug Mientkiewicz.and the game was tied. Crain managed to get pinch hitter Bama Rowell to hit a weak grounder to second to end the inning. The Hustlers brought in Wayne Gomes to pitch the 10th inning. The first batter up is Joe DiMaggio. DiMaggio works a 3-2 count ball, called strike, foul ball, foul ball, ball, ball, foul ball, HOME RUN 422 feet, right center. Gomes would get the next 2, give up a single to Tyler Moore and then retire pinch hitter Roy Smalley to end the inning. The Aces stuck with Jesse Crain for the bottom of the tenth. A smart move, 3 straight ground outs.. Aces win the first game Jesse Crain gets the win, but also earns a blown save Wayne Gomes takes the loss Player of the game, Fritz Peterson. The news was not all good for the Aces though as they lost Hank Aaron for the rest of the postseason when he dove for a line drive in the 4th inning and came to his feet holding his wrist. Aaron sprained his wrist. Last edited by David Watts; 03-10-2018 at 08:18 PM. |

October 2nd Alexandria vs Mobile 7:05pm
Mike Minor(17-11) vs Van Mungo(6-6) Clear skies, 75, wind blowing in from right, 13mph Van Mungo was a man on a mission today. He wasn't going to Alexandria down 2 games. It didn't take long for the Aces to know Mungo had his best stuff. Van threw 7 innings of 3 hit ball allowing zero runs and striking out 4. Wayne Gomes redeemed himself by going tossing 2 scoreless innings for the save. The win for Mungo is his 11th postseason win, making him a stellar 11-3 when it matters most. At the plate for Mobile the hitting stars were Jorge Orta, Tommy Holmes and Kirby Puckett. Orta was 2-5 with 3 RBI. Holmes 2-4, with a home run and 2 RBI. Puckett picked up 2 hits as well. The series is tied 1-1. We now have a travel day as the series shifts to Alexandra. |

October 4th Mobile vs Alexandria 7:05pm
Erik Bedard(16-9) vs Jimmy Key(14-10) How cool is this. Bedard(25) and Key(24) are front runners for Rookie of the Year. The battle of the rookies goes to Alexandria's Jimmy Key. Mobile got to Key first in the top of the second, Lou Gehrig singled, Frankie Hayes singled, Key then whiffed both Doug Mientkiewicz and Josh Willingham, but Russell Branyon hit a soft liner to center, scoring Gehrig. Charlie English flew out to center to let Key off the hook only down 1-0. Erik Bedard cruised through the first 3, but the 4th did him in. Bedard had 2 strikes on Jim Presley before he hit a grounder toward SS Charlie English. The ball bounced off Charlie's glove allowing Presley to reach first base. Up next, Joe DiMaggio. With a 1-2 count, Joe smashed one over 3B and down into the corner. Presley was able to score all the way from 1st and the game is tied. Buddy Blair is next up. He flies out to shallow left. Tyler Moore steps to the plate and with the count 2-1 pushes one to 2B on the ground. He's out, but DiMaggio moves up to 3B. Bedard then walks Duke Kenworthy on 4 straight pitches. 1st and 3rd, and up steps the man replacing the Injured Hank Aaron in the lineup, Curtis Pride. Pride has been a member of the Southern League for 8 years now. 319 games, 960 at bats, a wonderful .198 batting average. Dude has a 0.5 WAR. So, what do you think happens..........well I bet you guessed home run.....nope, Pride triples on a 2-2 count to RF. Up steps Marty Marion, single. Alexandria 4-1 at the end of 4. Bedard would go 6.2 innings, allowing 4 runs, all unearned, allowing 8 hits. Erik whiffed 7 and walked 1. Jimmy Key would settle in allowing only 1 more run a solo Charlie English home run. Key 7 innings, 8 hits, 2 runs, 6 k's and 2 walks. Jesse Crain came in to pitch the last 2 innings, doing so in scoreless fashion for the save. Alexandria now leads series 2-1 |

Monday, October 5th 1970 Mobile vs Alexandria 7:05pm
George Brunet(0-0) vs Fritz Peterson(0-1, 1.08) Partly cloudy, 56 degrees, wind blowing out to left 9mph Fritz Peterson too much for Mobile. For the second time in the series, Peterson held the Mobile bats in check. Both teams traded runs early, with Mobile scored a run in the 1st, Alexandria a run in the 3rd. Both scored a single run in the 4th. It was the 5th that did in the George Brunet and the Mobile Hustlers. The Aces Curtis Pride led the inning off with a meek ground out to the pitcher. Brunet then walked Marty Marion. Dave Watkins would replace Marion at 1st grounding a ball to SS to force out Pride at 2B. Ed Kranepool would then single moving Watkins to 2B. Jim Presley was next in the order. Presley is 2-2 for the game with a RBI single in the 1st and a triple in the 4th. Ball, ball, called strike, swinging strike, Home Run to left center 410 ft. Presley is now 3-3 and he's driven in all 4 of Alexandria's runs. Mobile would try to mount a comeback in the top of the 9th Kirby Puckett singles, followed a batter later with a double by Lou Gehrig. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Doug Mientkiewicz grounded out to 1st. This allowed Puckett to score and move Gehrig to 3rd. With 2 outs, Josh Willingham went down on strikes. Game over Alexandria wins 5-3 Fritz Peterson went 8 strong innings, scattering 8 hits, 3 runs, 6 strikeouts, 1 walk. Javy Guerra entered the game with one on in the top of the 9th. He got the 3 outs to earn the save. Alexandria is now up 3 games to 1, with one more game at the home park. |

Tuesday, October 6th, 1970 Mobile vs Alexandria 7:05pm
Gerry Janeski (0-0, 3.18) vs Mike Minor (0-1, 2.45) Cloudy 51 degrees, wind blowing out to left 10mph. What a game. Janeski and Minor locked in to a pitchers duel with neither pitcher allowing a run over the first 5 innings. Mobile would score first pushing across 2 in the top of the 6th. Lou Gehrig would single and move to second on a Doug Mienkiewicz single. Josh Willingham would follow with a walk. Russell Branyon would step up with the bases loaded. With the count 1-1, Russell would double to right scoring Gehrig and Mienkiewicz. Williingham would try to score from 1st but is nailed at the plate. 2-0 Mobile. The game stayed 2-0 until the bottom of the 8th. Gerry Janeski cruising along with 7 scoreless innings, allowed a single off the bat of Marty Marion. Janeski was yanked from the mound in favor of Wayne Gomes. Looked like it was a smart move to start, as Gomes got Buddy Blair to swing and miss on a 3-2 pitch to. One down Marion stole 2nd on strike 3. This is when the Gomes insertion went bad. Jim Presley singled between short and third scoring Marion from 2nd. 2-1 Mobile. Gomes would then get Ed Kranepool to fly out to center. 2 outs, can Gomes pitch his way out of it??? Nope. Joe DiMaggio for the second time in the series, plays the role of hero with a line drive home run to left. Alexandria 3-2. Jon Coutlangus would remain on the mound for the Aces to start the 9th. Jon would get the first two batters to go down peacefully. He then allowed a single to Tommy Holmes. The Aces brought Javy Guerra into the game to face Kirby Puckett. After falling behind 2-0, Guerra got Puckett to foul off a pitch and swing and miss at the next offering. 2-2. Pucket then hit a weak grounder to 2B to end the game. Aces win series 4 games to 1. Series MVP: Jim Presley 8-20, 2 home runs and 6 RBI. Presley hit .400 for the 5 game series. Now it's off to Fort Worth after a travel day. |
