GM - manager, facegen, aging?

Seeing the ages of GM/Managers (facegen pic on manager's office page) makes me curious... thinking it's suppose to be me...
Does that character ever die and need to be replaced?
Or if you sim out 100 years, are you then whatever your start age was +100 years old?

No, there is no provision for death in the game, yet. So your pic will get pretty old-looking but "you" will never die. Which is not realistic and which has been discussed in these forums at length but so far nothing has changed.

One of the points that people have made is that most leagues don't last that long (100+ years) due to user abandonment or file corruption. But some do, which is why we should all look the grim reaper in the face, including in the game that we play!

I see...
Being that the game saves over itself every time it saves instead of making a new file, I have been wondering about file corruption with this game.
How often or soon does it take for file corruption happen?

That's not easy to answer. File corruption is a phenomenon that we have all experienced but it is NOT an inevitable occurrence. People here have told about leagues that have lasted for decades, over a century.

What I think the chances of file corruption depend on are:
  • Size of league; that is, how many teams and levels of minor leagues.
  • Complexity of league; that is, how many other leagues exist in the universe?
  • Longevity of league; the more seasons, the more players, the more files created.
  • User customizations; the more tinkering done with database files, the more risk incurred.
Computer age, quality, and regular maintenance may also play a role. So does luck, no doubt.

So there is no hard and fast rule about file corruption. Don't worry about it, because it will spoil your fun. Just back up often because sometimes you can go back to a backup and resume from that point without further trouble.

Since there is only one backup save file... when a corruption does happen:
Do you learn about the corrupt file right away when you load the game?
Or can a corrupted game be saved as the backup and you find out that it happened later?

What prompted your inquiry about file corruption, if you don't mind my asking. Have you had this experience with other games?

  1. No. I don't think it becomes apparent some times until the game repeatedly crashes or will not start at all.
  2. Yes, unfortunately. That is why, if you want to be super-cautious, you may want to save and save multiple backups. Even then, what appears to be a clean restore may already have the seeds of file corruption and you end up in the same boat anyway.
So perhaps the best way to deal with file corruption is to avoid overdoing the bulleted points in my response above while at the same time not living in fear of it. Stuff happens but I would not let it overly limit your game-playing freedom and flexibility, and therefore your fun.

How do I make more than one backup?
Since there is no 'save as' file function... and I thought all the files for the game are spread out...
Or are they all in one folder? If they are, then copying and saving that folder as a different name would be easy, I would think.

Ohh... http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...kup-files.html
So if I save and rename the file from here into a different folder for each extra backup, that would do it all?

i save 2 files each season and have at least 1 backup per season for the entire history of my league. After i backup the game i move it from the backups folder to a folder on my external drive and name it SOS 2005 or EOS 2004. Eventually i delete the EOS.

I see you found the answer to your first question - by default, the backup is made to a folder within the C:\Users\[your name]\Documents\Out of the Park Developments\OOTP Baseball 15\backups folder (see below). What you would do, then, is to rename this folder and include the backup date in the folder name. Even better, what I do is to use a file compression program like WinZip to make zip copies of the entire folder at different times, each time after doing the latest backup. So then you have just the one backup folder going but a series of zip files which you would name with the dates of when they were created.
