I will finish the final posts soon. Before that though, I have a question:
Does anyone have a suggestion for re-doing the International match-ups from post 43? I would like to have better fight match-ups but I need to keep the system relatively simple and repeatable due to the size of this thing. Could it be as simple as pitting 1v10, 2v8... then 11v20, 12v19... 21v30, 22v29...? Thanks

I would be interested though if someone has a systematic approach that would work well.

I tend to match up the contenders by their most recent records. That way you are having elimination bouts of fighters on recent win streaks to get a #1 contender for a world title. Conversely, fighters with a recent loss meet each other to determine who is worthy to remain in the higher contender groups.
These threads on universe development have been very interesting. Thanks.

Here's What I Do ...
Chris, what I do in my Uni (which I'm sure has a much smaller number of active fighters than yours because the rankings list doesn't go much below the top 30 in most cases) is match up guys roughly based on the following criteria: (1) who's available that month, (2) who has similar rankings (looking at pp, not the boxer rating), (3) guys on a roll with a win last bout tend to face each other, and (4) guys who haven't met before tend to face each other. I don't use any elaborate spreadsheet "system" or die-rolling, it's just seat-of-the-pants looking at what matches make sense. I.e., if a guy holds a regional belt and there's another guy doing well in the same region, he challenges for the belt. Of course, there's exceptions, like if two fighters had a weird result or close bout the last time (i.e. a stoppage on cuts, a foul, or a draw or split decision) the likelihood I would match them up again is alot greater than otherwise.
Don't know how to program this in a computerized exercise, but these are just the factors I look at. |

Thanks Kevin and JCWeb. I like the subjective (seat-of-the-pants) angle. I am going to try that this next round on the top thirty and see what happens. It may not take as much time as I fear and would certainly be more enjoyable.

I appreciate this whole thread you did. Glad you took the time to explain your universe. Did you post the announcer .dat file and photos yet?

I just sent a PM to Swimmer to see if he can help. This spread sheet looks fantastic and will get a lot of use in my universe if I can get it to work. Christopher

F9 doesn't work for me either. I have to reopen the spreadsheet to get it to create new names.
Here's a couple of flags Chris (or anyone else) might like. Austria-Hungary for pre world war one years and the newly independant nation of Montenegro (recently seperated from Serbia) Last edited by PublicEnemy; 10-05-2006 at 01:48 PM. |
