#2 Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 #7 New York Rangers
#3 Boston Bruins 2-4 #6 Buffalo Sabres
#4 Montreal Canadiens 2-4 #5 Hartford Whalers

WESTERN CONFERENCE QUARTERFINALS

#2 Colorado Avalanche 4-1 #7 Vancouver Canucks
#3 Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 #6 Dallas Stars
#4 St. Louis Blues 2-4 #5 Calgary Flames

Series Preview:

Season Recap 2-1-1 HARTFORD:
November 5th: 1-1 Tie
November 18th: 3-1 PHI
December 23rd: 2-1 HFD
March 25th: 3-2 HFD

OFFENSE: The Flyers balanced and powerful offense was on display vs the Rangers with Peter Forsberg, Pavel Bure and Mikael Renberg scoring 4+ goals in the five game series. Leading the Whalers is Pat Verbeek(4-5-9) and Bobby Holik(3-5-8), but their offense is just as balanced as the Flyers as they scored 3+ goals in all six games vs Patrick Roy and the Montreal Canadiens.
ADVANTAGE: Philadelphia

DEFENSE: The Flyers were led by the pairing of Sergei Gonchar and Sandis Ozolinsh as the two combined for a +2 and 6 points vs the Rangers. Eric Desjardins(56GR) struggled vs the Rangers and will need sto step it up vs the Whalers. Veterans defenseman Gord Murphy broke his pelvis and will miss the rest of the post season, so Terry Carkner will be relied on in the third line position. The Whalers are led by Zarley Zalapski(2*)(16G-35A-51PTS) and 21-year old Chris Pronger(3*)(13G-32A-45PTS) and they will be called upon for a majority of the games. Both defenseman averaged 23 minutes a night vs Montreal with the 2nd line of Marc Bergevin(1.5*) and Frantisek Kucera(2*) averaging 20 Minutes.

ADVANTAGE: DRAW

GOALTENDING: Ron Hextall took over after Snow floundered in the 2-1 Loss to the Rangers in Game 1 and never looked back. His 4-0-0 record with a 2.44GAA and 92.6SV% put him in the top five for goalies. Whalers Goalie Roman Cechmanek did enough to hold the Canadiens at bay. 3-1 record with a 3.35GAA and 88.8SV% is nothing to brag about and he'll need to be better.
ADVANTAGE: PHILADELPHIA

Prediction: Philadelphia in Six

Flyers Obliterate Whalers in Four-Game Sweep

The Flyers took advantage of Hartford's decision to start goaltender Jason Currie over Roman Cechmanek and blew the Whalers out in four straight games. Wayne Gretzky took over Game 2 and 4 with a combined eight points in those games.

#1 Pittsburgh Penguins vs #2 Philadelphia Flyers

Alas we meet again you flightless birds.

Season Recap Flyers won series 2-1-1:

November 4th: 7-4 PHI
December 17th: 5-5 Tie
January 27th: 6-5 PIT
March 31st: 7-3 PHI

PREVIEW

OFFENSE: The Flyers are starting to heat up after a blowout series vs the Whalers. Four players have over six goals. Forsberg has been playing some of the best hockey around with 18 points in 9 games, averaging 21 minutes a game and has a 59.3 FO%. Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr are 1-2 in the Playoff Scoring race with 22 Points each, the next closest is Paul Coffey with 13 points so the balance that was once there is starting to dwindle. Ron Francis only has one goal in the 9 games the Pens have played.
ADVANTAGE: DRAW

DEFENSE: Both bluelines have injuries that may keep them out of the lineups. Larry Murphy is currently out with a Strained Groin for the Penguins and Eric Desjardins is day to day with groin tightness. Top to bottom the Flyers have a more talented defense corp, while the Pens have the higher talented players in Coffey and Murphy.

ADVANTAGE: Philadelphia

GOALTENDING: Tom Barrasso vs Ron Hextall again. Hextall is the hotter goalie right now, going 8-0 with a 2.22GAA and 93.1SV%. Barasso is 8-1 with a 2.39GAA and 90.6SV%. If the Flyers can put a lot of rubber on net they'll win the series.
ADVANTAGE: PHILADELPHIA

PREDICTION: FLYERS IN SEVEN

Flyers advance to cup finals

After falling in Game 1 to a lopsided 6-2 loss, the Flyers rebounded with a blowout victory of their own then turned out three straight defensive battles to take the series 4-1 over the FIVE-time defending Stanley Cup champions, Pittsburgh Penguins. Wayne Gretzky scored the OT Winner in Game 5. The Flyers will take on the Chicago Blackhawks, who swept the Detroit Red Wings handily. Could this be the start of a new dynasty?

Philadelphia flyers vs chicago blackhawks

Season Tied 1-1

October 22nd: 5-4 PHI
February 25th: 4-1 CHI

Offense: Peter Forsberg and Wayne Gretzky vs Jeremy Roenick and Steve Thomas. Foppa and the Great One are the Point leaders for the current players(behind Jagr/Lemeiux), but Roenick, Chelios and Thomas are over 17 points as well. The Flyers have Renberg, Yashin and Bure at over a PPG. Top lines will be the deciding factors.
ADVATAGE: PHILADELPHIA

DEFENSE: Chicago managed to stifle the high powered offenses in the Western Conference in Colorado and Detroit with two straight sweeps allowing just 15 goals. Chris Chelios leads the way for the Hawks with Karl Dykhuis, Alexei Zhitnik and Bryan Marchment providing support. Head Coach Mike Keenan has the Hawks playing a heavy forechecking style that keeps the pressure off the blueline and goaltenders. Philadelphia is healthy and their young talented blueline is very hungry and can shut down any team. They held Lemeiux and Jagr to just eight points in their series and only two goals so their confidence is riding high.
ADVANTAGE: EVEN

GOALTENDING: Hextall has been continuing to dominate the opposing teams with a 12-1 record and a 2.33GAA and 93.4SV% with two shutouts. Jimmy Waite has surprised many with a 12-2-1 record and a 2.21GAA, 92.1SV% and three shutouts. It's Hextall's experience vs Waite's current game.
ADVANTAGE: Philadelphia

PREDICTION: FLYERS IN SIX

Not Dead

Sorry haven't updated in a while. Into November 1996 so here's a quick Off-season recap:

Signings:
Resigned John LeClair(3yrs/$1.52M)
Resigned Peter Forsberg (3yrs/$1.85M)
Resigned Wayne Gretzky (1yr/$1.72M)
Signed Free Agent Chris Pronger(3*/4*) to a 4yr/$3.3M deal
Couldn't resign Roger Neillson as Head Coach (Couldn't afford him ) so we hired up and comer Benjamin Beavington(20 in tactics and 12 in-game tactic rating). Our bench is loaded with Gerry Cheevers as our goalie coach while Jacques Demers, Ken Hitchcock and Barry Trotz hold the other A.Coach positions. I'm going to promote either Hitch or Trotz after Beavington leaves.

Draft:
Drafted Danius Zubrus with the 24th Overall pick, then dealt our 4th, 5th and 6th round picks to TB for their 1997 3rd Round Pick

Notable draftees:
#1 C Pavel Datsyuk - Florida
#2 G Nicklas Backstrom - TB
#3 LD Mark Streit - Anaheim
#4 C Daniel Briere - NJ
#5 C Eric Belanger - NYI
#6 LW Matt Cooke - SJ
#11 Tomas Kaberle - PHX
#14 Chris Phillips - NYR

As of November 24th, 1996 we're sitting at 14-6-3 which is #2 in the East behind the damn Penguins(18-2-1) despite having scoring the most goals(99). We've allowed 68 goals, so goaltending will be something I'm looking to shore up with Hextall(2.5*) and Garth Snow(1.5) holding it down at the moment.

End of 1997 Season

Another Division Title for the Flyers as we win our third straight! Chasing the Penguins again as usual, but their time is coming(I hope)(Mario is out with a fractured hand for 1 month and their #1 Dman Larry Murphy is out 2-3 months with a Grade II Concussion). Our core is all under 30, with only our goaltending being the old guys. We finished off the season with a 14-game unbeaten streak and Ron Hexall is now the All-Time leader in Wins for the Flyers. We have a date with the Hartford Whalers, led by a young Roman Cechmanek and Daniel Alfredsson. Should be fun. Pronger returns to his old stomping grounds

Flyers Eliminate Whalers in 5 Games

Flyers set the pace with two blowouts in the Series openers and never looked back. Despite losses to their blueline, the Flyers never wavered against the Whalers and see their way through to the Semi-Finals. Mikael Renberg led the way with 4 goals and 7 assists, while Forsberg and LeClair each chipped in 8 points each. The Flyers lost Eric Desjardins for a week as well as Chris Pronger, who is day-to-day with a sore hip. Vladimir Malakhov suffered a Severe Calf Laceration in Game 3 but returned for Game 4 and still played an average of 18 Minutes.

Around the league the two main threats to our Repeat were knocked out in seven games. The league had 6 out of the 8 Series go to a full seven game series.

Rod Brind'Amour Saves the Flyers' Bacon with Game 7 Heroics

Ron Hextall stopped 66 of the 67 Shots he faced from Game 5 to Game 7 and Rod Brind'Amour scored the two lone goals including the OT Winner to help the Flyers survive an embarrassing upset at the hands of Patrick Roy and the Montreal Canadiens. Hextall ended up with three shutouts in the series and they were during pivotal points of the series. The Flyers needed a win in Game 3 after dropping the first two at Home, much to the dismay of the Philly faithful and Hextall shut the Habs down. The Habs answered back in Game 4, but that was their last hurrah. Forsberg led the way with four assists in Game 5, while ex-Habs Mark Recchi potted two goals in Game 6 to secure the win.

Flyers Advance to 2nd Straight Final

After the scare they got from Montreal, Philadelphia was determined not to have that happen again as they made short work of the Boston Bruins and prevented Ray Bourque from lifting the Stanley Cup. The Legion of Doom (Recchi-Forsberg-LeClair) has continued to dominate their opponents.

Next up are the Colorado Avalanche led by Joe Sakic, Owen Nolan(League leading 14 goals) and Eric Lindros

(Note: I can't believe this happened like this. Forsberg vs Lindros)

Peter Forsberg Scores Game 7 OT WINNER

Flyers have won their 2nd Straight Stanley Cup after Peter Forsberg scored in Overtime of Game 7! In a back and forth series that saw some of the best hockey NHL Fans have ever seen, it was no surprise that Overtime was needed as both teams refused to give an inch. The Flyers managed to do it without John LeClair, who missed the remainder of the series after suffering a Groin Injury in Game 4, as well as Sandis Ozolinsh, who fell from his friend's roof while helping his buddy shingle the roof....during a Stanley Cup Final.....

1997-98 - Flyers win President, allow only 151 Goals. Garth Snow and Ron Hextall were under 1.90 GAA. Rolled through the East and Knocked off Detroit in 5 for their third straight Cup. Nashville joins the league, picks four goalies (Burke, Potvin, Snow, Theodore) and get Lecavalier #1

98-99 - Devils are knocking at our door. McPhee makes his 1st huge move, dealing Wayne Gretzky and Mike Knuble to Florida for Jarome Iginla(21yrs) and Niklas Hagman early in October. Detroit tied us for League lead, Chris Osgood was insane with a 1.52 GAA and the NHL did not have a 50 goal scorer or a 100-point scorer for the first time in a LONG time.
Playoffs: Penguins swept NJ in the 1st round, Flyers win 4th Straight Cup(FOrsberg took home Conn Smythe)
Mike Ricci has won 6 straight Selke Trophy

99-00: Atlanta joins the NHL(Evgeni Nabokov from TB is their key pick and picked Zetterberg #1). Henrik Sedin goes to EDM and Daniel goes to NSH. Heatley goes to VAN. Atlanta also went after RFA Stephane Robidas from OTT.

Reg Season: NJ took everone to school, Martin Brodeur ensured that. Flyers lost in 1st Round to Pittsburgh so that rivalry is still very much active.

Detroit won the Cup with a 4-0 Sweep of the Penguins behind Ty Conklin and Chris Osgood

00-01: Minnesota got Luongo and Vokoun from the Exp Draft, while Columbus got Dafoe, Potvin and Turek.

Flyers returned back to the top behind Forsberg, Iginla and Ron Hextall. Dwayne Roloson jumped to a 5* Potential(strange). Devils plummeted, Detroit lost the Division to Chicago. Florida, with Hasek in goal, took the Southeast division by storm.

Playoffs: Flyers blitzed through the League with only the Penguins winning games. Gonchar took home his 3rd Conn Smythe, Forsberg won the Art Ross.

01-02: Flyers took home the President, but the gap is closing and it showed with the Rangers knocking the Flyers out in the Semi-finals in 7 games. Dallas took home their 1st Stanley Cup in Six games vs the Rangers.

02-03 - Flyers squeaked into the Playoffs, Hextall/Roloson split for reasons....Flyers made it to the Conf Finals, Penguins knocked them out in five then beat Chicago for the Cup in five. Ron Hextall retired, Flyers retired his #27, Yzerman retired, Detroit retired #19

03-04 - Flyers traded Brind'Amour to NSH for 20-yr old Mark Giordano. Forsberg fractured a neck vertabre at the start of the season. Detroit did terrible
Devils beat LA Kings for the Cup.
Detroit won the Draft Lottery, but drafted Jonathan Quick instead of OV. Ovechkin fell to #7 Columbus. Malkin went #2 to the Blues

04-05 Colorado had an abysmal year (17-51-14), Pittsburgh took home the President, but there is a shift in the League powerhouses with Anaheim, Florida, Edmonton and Buffalo creeping up. Jagr is dragging the Penguins to the top. Flyers are struggling with out a goalie

San Jose Sharks won the Stanley Cup
Hasek(FLA), Hull(STL) and Robitaille(LA) retired with # Retired

Islanders won the Lottery and picked Carey Price. Colorado picked Tuuka Rask....Detroit got Sidney Crosby
