Fake Baseball is Fun
"No matter how it is that your mind works, baseball reaches out to you. If you're an emotional person, baseball asks for your heart. If you are a thinking man or a thinking woman, baseball wants your opinion. Whether you are left-brain or right-brain, Type A or Type Z, whether your mind is bent toward mathematics or toward history or psychology or geometry, whether you are young or old, baseball has its way of asking for you." - Bill James
Baseball always has something to offer us. It offers us its past, its present, and its future. We see the past in sepia-toned photos, handlebar mustaches, retired numbers, and plaques in a Cooperstown museum. We see the present in high definition, in multiple millions and billions of dollars, in the MLB Network and Extra Innings, in the joy of a summer day out at the yard. But how do we see the future? Of all the joys to be found in a simple game, the anticipation of watching baseball's unscripted drama play out is one of its greatest... |

Michael Kay is working the New York Yankees’ play-by-play. The Yankees are hosting Texas, and lead 1-0 in the fifth with two out and Endy Chavez at second. Elvis Andrus is the hitter, Javy Vazquez the pitcher. "...Elvis Andrus now steps to the plate. Two away here in the top of the 5th… Yankees lead, one to nothing. Chavez takes a lead off second… here’s Vazquez, and... he missed down and in. Ball one… Andrus, one of the better rookies in the league last year, at the moment in a furious battle with the Mendoza line… now the one-oh pitch… here’s a sharp liner in the hole – A-Rod dives and makes a spectacular diving catch on that line drive! A sensational play by A-Rod! And he is suddenly coming up... rather awkwardly… it's not clear exactly what happened, but he is on the ground now, and holding his right leg near the ankle. It's hard to tell what went wrong - A-Rod dove to get the line drive from the bat of Andrus, and when he tried to get up, was unable. Jeter is waving for Donohue, who is already on his way out... Rodriguez made the play to end the inning, and now appears to be seriously hurt..." Last edited by His Own Bad Self; 04-15-2010 at 12:52 AM. |

Associated Press Alex Rodriguez has broken a bone in his right ankle and is likely to be out until at least the All-Star Game. Rodriguez, hitting .106 with 3 home runs and 5 RBI, suffered the injury diving to catch an Elvis Andrus line drive in the fifth inning of Sunday’s game against Texas. Kevin Russo substituted for Rodriguez and will start at third base tonight in Rodriguez’ absence. It's unclear for now how the Yankees plan to fill the position long-term. Has There Been a Worse Time for Baseball Fans in Los Angeles? Forgive Dodger Fan and Angel Fan if they need reminders of their teams' respective division crowns last season. Only five weeks into the 2010 campaign, both teams already find themselves in last place. The Angels have lost six straight heading into a three-game series against Tampa Bay, dropping to 13-20, and the Dodgers have fallen in five consecutive games leading into their series at NL West-leading Arizona. They now sit at 12-19. Neither of the managers involved is familiar with losing, either. Mike Scioscia has been at the Angels' helm for 10 seasons, eight of which saw the Angels finish over .500, and six of which led to playoff berths. Joe Torre, of course, is well-known for managing the Yankees to their four World Championships between 1996 and 2000, as well as leading the Dodgers to the NL West title last year. "We know very well what we can do, so now it's just a matter of going out and doing it," Torre said after last night's 12-3 loss to Colorado. "From 1 to 25, we have players capable of playing championship-caliber baseball." That may be true, but injuries have been partly to blame, so that some of those championship-caliber players are currently on the shelf. Most notable of those among the missing is Chad Billingsley, who tore his labrum on Opening Day and will be out for at least the next couple of months. Hiroki Kuroda, Jeff Weaver, and Billingsley's fill-in, Charlie Haeger, are the other significant pieces currently out with various ailments. The same could not be said for the Halos. Until last week, when Howie Kendrick was lost for the season, the Angels' roster was largely injury-free. The losses of John Lackey, Chone Figgins, and Vlad Guerrero in the offseason have not been patched over well enough, and the offense has struggled noticeably. The Angels' trademark ability to manufacture runs appears to have deserted them. In the process of being swept by Seattle this weekend, the Angels left 36 runners on base, including 14 in last night's 6-2, 14-inning backbreaker, which was capped off by Jack Wilson's walk-off grand slam off of Rafael Rodriguez. If Mike Scioscia was displeased by his team's failure to come through in the clutch, he was able to hide it, at least momentarily. "Every team has rough stretches. We've just played at Boston, who's very good as usual, and at Seattle, who's leading our division. And in all of those games except for I think Friday, we gave ourselves a chance to win. All we need to do is take advantage of those situations. Kendry [Morales] has been great for us this season. He just had a bad day today. [Morales went 0 for 7 with three strikeouts, and 8 men left on base.] So did Torii [Hunter]. Baseball's like that sometimes." One hopes for Torre, for Scioscia, for their clubs, and the fans thereof, that "sometimes" doesn't last all season. Last edited by His Own Bad Self; 04-17-2010 at 02:09 AM. |

SEATTLE The Mariners had a chance to celebrate more than their team success last night. Ichiro scored his 1,000th career run in MLB play as the Mariners downed Detroit, 4-1. Seattle took the two-game series with pitching and defense, as the Tigers managed only one run in eighteen innings, and that only coming with two outs in the ninth of last night's match. Ian Snell had a masterful outing, pitching 81/3 scoreless innings, walking four, but striking out seven and giving up only two hits. He completely shut down the top of Detroit's order, as their first through fifth hitters went 0 for 16, striking out five times. Snell wasn't the only one to get a standing ovation during the game. Ichiro scored on Ken Griffey Jr.'s single in the fifth, leading to a short delay as the announcement was made, and the fans showed their appreciation. Ichiro is having a subpar year by his standards, hitting .300, a career low, with four home runs and 23 RBI. However, the 36-year-old is still an effective hitter and fielder, and otherwise shows little sign of his advancing age. |

PHILADELPHIA The Philadelphia Phillies have fired manager Charlie Manuel, it was announced today. The Phillies were expected to contend, but lost their eighth game in a row last night, falling to 29-31, six games behind the NL East-leading New York Mets. Bench coach Pete Mackanin will serve as interim manager tonight against Boston. Last week, the Phillies put Chase Utley on the 15-day disabled list after the All-Star second baseman strained his oblique. It's unclear how long he will remain out. |

KANSAS CITY Kansas City general manager Dayton Moore drew even more attention to the surprising Royals earlier today when he announced that "we can't be idle" as long as the Royals are in contention. The Royals, in second place behind Cleveland, have far exceeded expectations by playing one game over .500 (34-33) this season. Only five games separate first place from last in the American League Central, and under those conditions, Moore said, the time was right to act aggressively. "Certainly, there's still a lot of time left in the season. But we know for now that this team can play well for an extended period of time. If opportunities present themselves for us to be buyers and not sellers, we have to take advantage." The Royals will be without pitcher Zack Greinke indefinitely. The defending AL Cy Young Award winner strained a triceps muscle last week and is currently on the 15-day disabled list. |

Then he was a scout for the Reds and became interim manager after they canned Jerry Narron. He led a terrible team to a decent record, and they got rid of him anyway to bring in Dusty Baker and kill some young pitchers. Now in your league he's stuck with the interim tag yet again. I really feel bad for him. |
