Mlb 2020
Gotta say...with Hamels, Wheeler, the possibilities for Cole, Bumgarner, Rendon, Stras, this 2020 season is already getting exciting for me!
Things are moving WAY faster than this time last year! Wonder if anything blockbuster nuts will happen at the Winter Meetings?!?! Last edited by ForeverRoyalKC; 12-04-2019 at 06:27 PM. |

Giants making moves
Signed pitcher Kevin Gausman Also traded for the Angels' infielder Zack Cozart and last years' #1 pick, IF Will Wilson. Basically the Giants buying a prospect from the Angels. They give the Angels $12 million (in salary relief) for a prospect. Wonder what the Angels will do with that money? |

Evidently the Yankees didn't learn from A-Rod. You shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket.

Must be nice having all that money and owners willing to spend all that money.

I have to echo this. Nine years for a guy who will be 29 1/2 years old during spring training is too long. Once again, about 5, 6, 7 years from now, you are going to hear moaning and groaning about an expensive albatross on the roster.

But, heh. Price and Strasburg, especially Strasburg, must be having a V-8 moment (i.e., smacks head and says "D'oh" - a mashup of the commercial and The Simpsons but hopefully an effective way of relaying what I mean by "V-8 moment").
Not so much the average salary, Cole's is $36 mil to Strasburg's $35 mil, but the extra $72 mil guaranteed for the two additional years of Cole's contract. Does anybody realistically think, barring steroids, that Cole is going to be a $36 mil pitcher in years 8 and 9 of his contract? Of course, by then, this contract will appear as peanuts to what will be going on nine years from now. How soon will it be before we see the first billion dollar sports contract?

Only with the Yankees would "only one" sound like a disappointment. And I have yet to see a WS won because of "x" player. If you pay a player big $ it should be to get a trophy. Mission accomplished.
I personally don't feel contracts like this make sense long term. But if they win the last game of the season, a GM has gotta feel they made the right choice.

Deja, I was thinking the same thing! With a player setting a new bar year after year, I saw the Cole signing this morning and thought "In a few years, are we going to see 8 years, 550 million?"
Look, I believe players should get paid for their talents and contributions to their teams, but even as a big sports fan, this is getting way ridiculous. I can't believe Harper, Cole and Machado, just three players, are making a billion dollars! It staggers the mind! People knock golf for the game, chasing a little ball all over and knocking it into a hole, but golfers have to earn their money! You don't see the PGA resigned Joe Golfer for seven digits. You dont do well, you dont get paid. Period. |

I don't mind players getting paid, but that doesn't mean it's best for the team. For me I am happy with the big contracts it will make it easier for the Seattle Mariners to make playoff runs when their prospects mature because it is the more cost effective route.

The Yankees contract with Cole has clauses included. And the Yankees have reduced payroll by Didi and Jacoby -- so pretty much a wash for next year. Also remember Stanton contract was signed while he was a Marlin . And if the Minor league situation is changed the Yankees could be forced to cut more than 100 prospects.

Would things be different in 2020 ?
On December 6, 2010, Adrian González was traded to the Boston Red Sox from the Dodgers for a package of right-handed pitcher Casey Kelly, first baseman Anthony Rizzo, outfielder Reymond Fuentes, and a player to be named later, later determined to be Eric Patterson In late August 2012, the Red Sox completed one of the most massive trades in MLB history in terms of number of players, impact, and certainly in dollars. The Red Sox sent Adrián González, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford, and Nick Punto to the Dodgers in return for James Loney, Rubby De La Rosa, Allen Webster, Jerry Sands, and Iván De Jesús. The Dodgers agreed to cover $258 million of the $270 million owed to the players they received. Man -- did the Dodgers bail out the Red Sox ?

Rendon will wear a Halo -- 7 years, $245 million
Trout, Rendon, Ohtani, Justin Upton and an aging Pujols. This team will definitely hit and maybe have the best left-side of the infield defensively. But who is going to pitch? https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/...5m-deal-angels |
