I'm glad you are enjoying this Henry, thanks for sharing your dynasty with us. The format is growing on me, I'll have to catch up with my reading.

Did you by chance mention which schedules you are using? Searching around finds me a couple that Cooley did in June but I see your standings indicate you're using something other than a standard schedule throughout the years.

I've got plans on doing this myself (although I'd have to adjust the database) and have started on updating my Facegen caps and jerseys for the PCL throughout it's history.

Thanks again!

I wanted to include the variation in games from year to year (110-210), but wanted a balanced schedule AND didn't want to have to manually make one for each year change, so I used the in-game scheduler and 5-game series (most I could within options of the game scheduler). There's a lot of opinions about balanced versus unbalanced, but I kind of agree with Mark that a balanced schedule at least makes it fair. It would be interesting to know what the people of the time thought about uneven games.

In 1907, the PCL reduced to only 4 teams - partially because of the chaos of the San Francisco earthquake the year before, including a loss of fan interest as a result of teams playing in non-home parks and the huge financial and resource drain on the Western economy as the city was rebuilt. League management was concerned about the possible breakup of the league, and thus decided to cut back to four teams to stabilize the league.

The Seattle and Fresno franchises were dropped. Seattle due to its interest in joining the popular Class B Northwestern League, and Fresno (losing a lot of fan interest since Oakland was playing on their home field) disbanded.

My original intention in playing out the PCL was to treat the league as an independent league by breaking its tie with the MLB - and its constant loss of players to the bigger organization... letting the PCL players play out their careers in the PCL.

Since in RL Seattle went to the NW League and Fresno disbanded, the logical choice would be to dump the Fresno players to free agency and retire the Seattle players (since the roster would go with the team). That action, however would loose league leaders like Harry Lumley and Truck Eagan. In real life Lumley experienced a series of injuries that ended his career in the majors by 1909, and Truck Eagan was to retire in 1909 at 32. Personally I really don't want to cut off their careers in 1906 when my replay could bring them different outcomes.

So, I will put both rosters into the free agent pool and see where they go from there, basically ignoring the fact Seattle went to the NW league in order to keep my original plan intact.

Just as clarification for those interested, the 1906 season was reduced to 180 games to represent the 2-3 weeks the league shut down after the earthquake. In 1907-08, the season will be 190 games for the remaining 4 teams, and will go back to 210 games when the league expands back to 6 teams in 1909.

I think in general, PCL or otherwise, the schedules were in some way unbalanced because of travel considerations or events like the 1906 earthquake that relocated teams or forced teams to share facilities. It may have been a way to keep financially unstable franchises in the league.

Proceeded to make changes as outlined above and noticed that Portland (having been in 5th place) managed to sign almost all the better free agents including Eagan and Lumley. Not sure what logic the game uses to prioritize these signings, but it did seem heavily weighted in favor of Portland.

I then loaded up a backup copy, and manually drafted the first three "rounds" for each of the four teams - then let the game sign players after that. The results were more equal - BUT - the 12 signings I made did not get recorded to the player histories - from a historical standpoint, these players just magically appeared on thier new team with no signing date.

The game wouldn't allow to be set up a draft to distribute these players since I wasn't expanding the league.

At this point I need to think which is the lesser evil - to let Portland sign the cream of the crop - or to manually make it more even and accept that the signing line item will be missing in some players histories.

Leaning toward letting Portland get away with a killer signing spree.

PS: In situations like this, the game needs to document all transactions - even if we go in manually to do them.

The PCL didn't have a fully balanced schedule until the mid to late 1950s if I recall correctly. Schedule imbalances were mostly an artifact of its scheduling system: 7-game series, with single games Tuesday through Saturday and a doubleheader on Sunday. Mondays were left open for travel. The league adhered fairly rigidly to this scheduling system, and when combined with the length of the season, teams typically didn't play opponents the same number of times. Moreover, the home and away splits against an opponent, or for the season as a whole, were also often imbalanced. (Adding to the imbalance was that doubleheaders were always played on holidays.)

Here, for example, is how the opponent matchups looked in the 1953 PCL schedule, which called for a 180-game regular season:

Code:
