Real players, but custom structure possible?

Is it possible for me to do a sim with historical players, meaning import the real players starting in 1871 . . . but use a custom structure. Like say I want to use 6 teams with my own structure for 1871, then change to 8 for 1875, drop to 6 in 1876 (I assume the players on the contracted teams will be thrown into the free agent pool. That's just an example by the way, not sure exactly how I'll do it.

Can I do this? Can I add another league starting in 1882? Move a few teams from one league to the other in 1892, get rid of the second league and again 'contract' the excess?

I realize the game won't do this automatically (at least I don't think it will), but can I do this on my own, while still using real players, assuming I get a little creative somehow?

Thanks for any help/guidance.

Yes you can.

This is my approach to it. I use advance mode. Select the season you want the players to come from (1871). You create a historical league from that year.

Then do to the league set up and change then names of the league and the teams. If you need to add/delete teams, then create the league and before you sim any days, go to the league structure. You can delete the structure and create your own.

I usually say it as a template, so I can make the initial structural changes. The start a new league from the template and make other changes.

You can edit you league anytime during the sim.

Enjoy. A great way to sim.

A couple of questions:
Does this approach only work for one season? I did something like this, but once the next preseason started, all of the teams had reverted to their RL teams even though I'd changed cities and nicknames.

Using your approach will future RL players be added to the drafts in subsequent years?

Thanks.
