A good way to start a serious game?

In the past I have just ran it in simulation mode. I enjoy this game even if I hardly know baseball. (I know, odd).

Is this a good way to start to learn the game? I set up a fantasy league starting in 1890 and plan to GM my team (hopefully to some championships!)

Prior to 1901 things are a little weird especially if trying to play straight historical without fictional players. From 1901-1912 some teams might have just 16 or 17 players. I would suggest to start around 1915 or later just to get familiar with some of the game basics, then go back to whatever era you prefer. I think modern baseball has to many teams/players to keep up with but that is probably because I am old.

no wrong way to do it... depends on your personal wants / goals etc.

since you are unfamiliar with baseball, it won't matter where you start... you don't be familiar with the names and strategies.

do you want to learn the modern game? 1900? etc? i'd start with what you think you are going to enjoy the most in future. historical? fictional? any combination between the two?

i'd try to learn what you will do the most in that respect.

e.g. in 1900 you basically can ignore hr power, whereas in 2018 it is a significant factor in player results.

if you have no intention of playing historical leagues, then you probably don't want to waste much time on them outside of a side attraction for boredom.

Outside of say, running oddball games (1960 world series pirates vs. the current world series champs) I not much into historical leagues at this point.

I mostly want to learn on a fantasy leagues, and perhaps once I get used to the game set up the current MLB but set up a expansion team and run the expansion team vs. the current league teams.

Noted on 1915.

Of course, I just might do what I have done in the past and just run season after season in simulation mode and watch dynasties and players rise up, and fall to the wayside. But I thinking I want to try to build up a team.

Also, I read the wiki but just so I understand, Rule 7 draft is that X number of players are protected, but you can select someone who not protected if you keep them on your main roster?

I started a historical 1871 with the players going to any team. Now just done the WS in 1908 and having a blast. A little more work but I have 10 minor leagues in the mix to help with the overflow of players.

Do you mean Rule 5 Draft?

If so, if you take someone in the draft you have to keep them in the majors, on the 25 man roster, for the season.

The idea behind this is in a highly talented organization a player who could be in the majors on many teams might be stuck in the minors. Rule 5 gives that player a chance to make the majors. Don't take anyone unless you're sure you want him on your major league roster.
