IBF MW title

Matthew Macklin had to go to Jamaica to make his 4th title defense due to the fact there was such little interest in his fight vs. Kemahl Russell in England. Fight fans there are hoping he'll have a huge domestic battle soon.

In the mean time, Matt easily dispatched Russell with a left hook rib shot @ 2:43 of the 7th - ahead 59-54 on all the cards.

MM now 24-1 (19 KO's) - not bad for a 5 rated fighter!

Battle of Britain

In the latest version, David Price was making his 1st defense after taking the title from Charles Martin earlier this year via an 8th round TKO. Dillian Whyte was the challenger & not much happened until the 8th when a huge right cross dropped Price for a count of 8. At 2:52 of the round, a Whyte left hook ended David's short reign as IBF champ.

WBC LHW title

Adonis Stevenson keeps on making successful defenses vs. the very best @ 175 - this time going Down Under to face Trent Broadhurst.

This fight was stopped in the 3rd round (TKO) after Trent received too much punishment from the heavy handed champ who now moves to 9-0 @ LHW & made his 7th title defense.

WW showdown

After losing his IBO title to Luis Collazo by decision earlier this year, Timothy Bradley agreed to go to Argentina to face the semi retired, Marcos Maidana.

Early in the fight it appeared Tim's speed & boxing ability would be enough but as the fight wore on, Marcos started to walk down & hurt the former champ with his powerful shots. In the 7th, a weary Bradley was getting beaten up & a hard rib shot dropped Tim for a 4 count. Teddy Atlas had seen enough & threw in the towel to save his fighter from additional punishment from the Argentine puncher @ 2:54 of the round.

Tim's now 8-3 & 147 while Marcos improves to 10-1 - all KO's.

At the time of the stoppage, Maidana lead 58-57 according to the Belgian judge but the American & Argentinian judges both had Tim ahead: 59-55 & 58-56.

WBA SMW int.

France's Hadillah Mohoumadi made the 1st defense of his interim belt against the unheralded - Beibi Berrocal.

Beibi didn't come into the fight known as a puncher but the Colombian proceeded to drop HM twice in the 5th & again in the 7th. Hadillah had not anticipated his 1st defense being this difficult so in the 8th, he bit down on his mouthpiece & came out firing - dropping BB for a 9 count after a hard hook. HM then just kept punching until the ref stepped in to save Beibi @ 2:54 of the round.

Beibi was up on all 3 cards @ the stoppage: 66-64 & 67-63 twice.

Scandal in the Ukraine

Making his 2nd title defense, Vyacheslav Shabranskyy (IBF LHW champ) welcomed Cedric Agnew to the Ukraine. Cedric was not a courteous guest as he proceeded to basically beat up the champ for 12 rounds - dropped VS 4 times. Then in the 13th, a low blow by Cedric caused the ref (Kruperich) to DQ Agnew @ 2:39 of the round. At the time of the stoppage, Cedric was up 116-107 on all 3 cards & won the PL battle as well: 408 (41%) to 139 (14%).

Ibo mw

Miguel Cotto assumed his 2nd title defense would be much easier than it was against the light punching - Willie Monroe, Jr.

After the 1st 7 rounds, Cotto decided to turn up the pressure & a huge hook/miss by Cotto was answered with a counter hook that dropped Miguel for a 4 count.

Then in the 10th, a right cross from Cotto dropped Willie. Coming down the stretch, it took everything he had to rally winning 5 of the last 6 rounds to eke out a 15 MD 142-142 & 143-141 twice.

Willie held a 324 (26%) to 256 (20%) PL edge but the judges gave Cotto the nod in what may have been his final fight.

WBO MW belt

Many assumed the younger Martin Murray would prove too big, strong & young for the WBO champ - Anthony Mundine (making his 7th title defense).

The so-called experts turned out to be wrong as Mundine turned in maybe his most impressive win yet with a 13th round left hook KO of Murray.

From the opening bell, Mundine tried to take out the Brit challenger but Martin proved too strong.

Over the 1st 12 rounds, Mundine dropped Martin 3 times before finally finishing him off in the 13th.

Mundine was was up 450 (40%) to 226 (29%) in PL & 119-106, 118-106 & 119-105 on the cards. Mundine is now 18-1 @ MW.

Martin falls to 19-2. Martin was the former IBO champ but lost the title due to a cut - after this thorough beating @ 160, Martin will probably stay @ 168.

The combined records of Mundine's last 3 opponents was 40-1.

WBC SWW title

Italy's Marcello Matano won the belt earlier this year via a close MD over James De La Rosa so in his 1st defense, he agreed to come to Ireland to face UFC superstar - Conor McGregor.

Conor came into the fight in tip top shape, Marcello came in less than toned - thinking this would be an easy night.

Early it looked that way as Marcelo dropped Conor in the 3rd. As the fight wore on, Marcello appeared to be the more skilled boxer but Conor's aggression & being in better shape helped make it a close fight. By the 10th, both were exhausted - then in the 15th, Conor dropped the champ with an uppercut - for a 4 count.

This was left to the judges, 1 American had Conor 143-142, another had Marcello 145-140 & the Brit judge had it 142 - all so the Italian retains his title via a Draw.

Conor was up 342 (22%) to 286 (32%) in PL. Conor's left eye had orange level damage. Marcello's record is now: 2-0-3

After the fight Conor said you know the judges would never allow an MMA fighter to win a boxing world title in his 1st fight but said he proved he's just as good as a boxing champ @ 154!

Using Ice Tea's updated ratings, Billy Joe Saunders cruised to an easy UD (148-137 & 147-138 twice) over defending champ, Curtis Stevens (now 16-2, 14 KO's).

BJ dropped the champ in the 10th with a left cross & improved to 12-0, 9 KO's.

BJ won the PL battle: 428 (32%) to 163 (17%).

Making his 2nd title defense, Rocky Martinez assumed he'd be far too experienced for the Money Team's hot prospect - Tank Davis.

Davis came into the fight in Puerto Rico with only 2 fights: a 2nd round KO & a 1st round TKO. The champ came in with a 7-1 record.

In the 1st, Rocky gave Davis a boxing lesson easily winning the round. In the 2nd, Tank came out firing & shook Rocky on 2 occasions winning that round. 47 seconds into the 3rd, a vicious hook from Tank ended Rocky's brief reign as champ & a new star is born.

Due to Manny's duties as a senator, he's been deemed a champ in recess so Jermall Charlo came to Argentina to face Javier Maciel.

Maciel won the WBA interim belt last year with a 1 punch KO 4th round KO of John Jackson.

Charlo took the 1st round due to his jab & boxing as Maciel was cautious with the large American. Javier appeared to take over from there for a few rounds until Charlo started picking up his pace.

In the 10th, a huge left hook dropped Javier for a 3 count, then a combo dropped Javier for another count of 3. With blood in the water Charlo just kept punching until the ref had no choice but to step in @ 2:26 of the round.

At the time of the stoppage, 2 judges had the fight even @ 86 each & the 3rd had Charlo up 87-85.

Charlo won the PL battle: 230 (32%) to 147 (19%) & improves to 9-0 with 7 KO's.

Maciel is now 5-1, 3 KO's.

Wrecking Machine

I've built Oleksandr Usyk to 6-0, 6 KO's.

He's fighting TC's but this is impressive:

3 KO - 2:11 (overhand left)
2 TKO - 2:31
1 KO - 1:47 (overhand left)
1 TKO - 2:26 (O -left dropped opponent for a 2 count)
1 KO (uppercut)
1 KO - 2:40 (short hook)

Nobody has made it to the 4th round with him & he's stopped his last 4 in the 1st.

Italy's Marcello Matano came back to the UK for his 2nd defense, this time in England vs. Larry Ekundayo.

In a tight fight with no KD's, Matano won the PL battle 349 (30%) to 342 (30%) while 2 judges had the fight tied @ 143. The 3rd had Matano winning 147-140.

So after having a draw with UFC superstar (Conor) in December, Matano has yet another draw & moves his overall record to 2-0-4.

In all my history of playing this game, both on the computer & the old board game, I can't ever recall having a fighter with 4 draws on his record - and that's with only 6 fights so far.

The Cuban Catasrophe

Is what it will always be known as to Russian fans of Sergey Kovalev. Sergey wanting to get away from another hard Russian winter agreed to come to much warmer Cuba for his 8th defense of his WBO LHW belt.

Thrilled to be fighting on his home soil, Sullivan Barrera unloaded a wild overhand right in the 2nd round that caught Sergey by surprise & knocked him out @ 1:23 of the round. Last year Barrera went up to CW for a title shot @ the WBA crown & in a brutal war with another Russian (Dmitry Kudryashov), The Russian Hammer finally knocked Barrera out in the 10th with a vicious uppercut.

This time Barrera changed the script to improve to 4-1 @ LHW while Kovalev suffers his 1st defeat & falls to 13-1 (13 KO's).

Making his 1st defense, John Molina made Amir Iman look like a tough sparring partner by dropping him 9 times over 15 rounds for a blowout UD: 149-129, 148-127, 147-127.

John also won PL 400 (21%) to 155 (15%) in what figured to be a tough defense for the now 8-0 WBA champ.

Amir is now 4-2, his previous loss (also by decision) to WBO champ, Jessie Vargas for the vacant belt.

IBO CW title

Fringe HW contender, Mike Perez, dropped down to CW last Sept to face Dmytro Kucher in a WBC int belt eliminator. Perez appeared well on his way to victory when an overhand right from Kucher caught & KO'd Perez @ 2:22 of the 15th.

So it was a surprise when Perez came in fat for this IBO title shot in front of his adopted fans from Ireland against the fearsome puncher making his 1st defense - Dmitry Kudryashov.

In the 5th, a left hook from The Russian Hammer dropped Mike for an 8 count. At that point it only appeared to be a matter of time but Mike survived the round & in the 8th, both men came out looking to end matters. Perez hit DK with a huge left cross that dropped the champ for a count of 3 & followed that up with a vicious uppercut to end the fight @ 2:21 of the 8th!

DK led on all 3 cards: 67-66, 68-64 & 68-63 but Perez's shots had started slight swelling on both of DK's eyes.

Shocker in Atlantic City

Ray Mancini decided to make his 1st title defense on the Boardwalk in AC as part of the July 4th holiday. His team picked Yordenis Ugas figuring forcing him to cut weight to 140 would make the much younger Cuban too weak.

Bad plan as Mancini dominated round 1, Ugas found his footing in the 2nd & in the 4th, a huge left hook miss by Ray was countered by a scorching right cross for a 7 count. A combo later in the round sent Ray down again for a 6 count. Ugas kept hitting Ray with brutal body & head shots until the ref reluctantly stepped in at 1:50 of the 4th.

Ray won the WBC JWW belt in May due to a cut over Julius Indongo so it was a short 2nd reign at 140.

Ugas indicated he might not be able to defend his new belt due to the problems he had making 140.
