WBC/IBF MW unification

Rather than face Errol Christie, IBF champ Jarrod Fletcher decided to fight new WBC champ, Fernando Guerrero, in Australia instead.

In what turned out to be a total mismatch, FG dominated the Aussie, dropping him 5 times before the fight was finally stopped @ 2:02 in the 13th.

FG also had the huge edge on the cards: 119-106, 119-105 & 118-107. PL: 365 ( 29%) to 210 (22%) for FG as well.

Guerrero is now 20-5 (17 KO's) & Fletcher loses for the 1st time to fall to 7-1-1 (3 KO's).

Stunner in Wales!

Making the 6th defense of his WBC Super Welter belt, Bradley Pryce figured a domestic class with Tom Doran would both be easy & pay relatively well for the risk level.

Tom proved to be anything but easy as he out boxed & out lasted the champ to win a 15 UD - 144-140 twice & 143-142.

At times Pryce looked a lot older than the 6 year age difference would have suggested. Tom landed 425 (42%) punches to 240 (23%) & was much more accurate as well.

As he felt the fight slipping away, Pryce pressed the action in the 9th & was rewarded with a hard left hook to drop Pryce for a 2 count.

Pryce is now 14-2-1, 5 KO's.

Making his 2nd defense, Frank Grant faced mandatory challenger - Roberto Santos in Spain.

Santos, a dangerous puncher @ 6-1, (all KO's) gave the Brit champ all he could handle for 12 rough rounds until a combo from Grant ended the fight @ 2:05 of the round.

In the gave & take affair, Frank was up on 2 of the 3 cards, 105 to 104, while Santos lead on one card: 105-104.

Making the 1st defense of his title, Italy's Salvatore Erittu rallied late to stop England's Dean Francis.

Dean appeared to control most of the fight until the 12th when 2 KD's finally put an end to his challenge @ 2:51 of the 12th.

At the time of the stoppage, Dean lead on 2 cards: 107-103 while the remaining judge at the fight even @ 105 each.

Fighting for the vacant WBO title, Paulie Malignaggi came to Italy to fight Leonard Bundu.

The fight went to a decision as expected with Paulie landing an incredible 508 punches (57%) to only 238 (16%) for Bundu.

Basically Paulie couldn't miss & swelled up both of Bundu's eyes.

Paulie's now 13-0 (2 KO's) @ WW & Bundu drops his 2nd @ 147 - now 7-2-1 (2 KO's).

Fighting for the vacant title, Victor Ortiz came to Columbia to fight the rugged - Juan Urango.

Victor was perfect @ 140 (16-0, 13 KO's). His lone pro defeat was years ago when he was knocked out in the 3rd in a WBA WW title shot.

Victor's relative youth (7 years younger) & speed appeared to be the difference until a huge left cross from Juan ended the fight 32 seconds into the 6th round.

At the time, Vic was up 49-46 on all 3 cards & was ahead in PL: 183 (46%) to 100 (32%).

Juan's now 16-2, 14 KO's & Victor blamed the loss on having to cut too much weight to still make 140.

Making his 1st defense, Charles Martin went to Switzerland to face Arnold Gjergjaj.

The 2 fighters appeared evenly matched until the 6th when a hard body shot dropped Arnold for an 8 count. At that point Martin would not be denied & kept punching until the ref stepped in @ 2:34 of the round.

After the fight Charles said anyone who knows boxing can plainly see he's the future & next huge star of the sport!

Bidding his time until one of the bigger names will fight him, Dmitry Pirog returned to Moscow to defend for the 2nd time against the seasoned but solid vet from Down Under - Sam Soliman.

Sam's awkward style appeared to give the champ problems @ times but in a 9th, a solid cross landed sending Sam to the deck for a count of 6. He rose on unsteady feet & was obviously hurt & after a few more blows the ref stepped in @ 2:57 of the round. Sam protested hoping he'd have had time to recover between rounds but it was not meant to be.

Pirog lead on 2 of the cards: 78-75 & 77-76 while the US judge had Sam up 77-76. Pirog had a slight edge in PL: 190 to 184.

Pirog's now 13-0, 12 KO's & Sam's 17-2, 8 KO's.

Making his 1st title defense, Kell Brook agreed to go to Denmark to face former WBC champ, Thomas Damgaard.

Kell wanted to be more impressive than WBO champ, Ruslan Provodnikov when he beat TD via decision. Also, Thomas KO'd Amir Khan years ago to take Khan's WBA JWW belt.

Other than a flash right cross KD for a 2 count early in the fight, not many fireworks as Brook pounded out a 15MD: 143-141, 143-140 & 142-142.

Kell won PL: 320 (30%) to 254 (21%).

Brook is now 19-0, 14 KO's & TD's 20-3-1, 17 KO's.

Meanwhile in Holland, GGG came to fight Ray Joval for the EBU belt after GGG lost his WBC belt to Fernando Guerrero due to a cut.

Joval only lasted 7 rounds & was dropped 4 times during the fight.

Joval had gone the full 15 & lost by decision to Pirog for the vacant IBO belt in his last fight.

Making the 3rd defense of his title, Canelo came to Vegas to face a very tall challenge in the boxer- Willie Nelson.

Nelson's style & jab proved to be a puzzle for Canelo as he tried to press the action in the fight. Towards the end of the 8th, a hard right cross caught Canelo rushing in for a flash KD & count of 1 right @ the end of the round.

Canelo continued to press the action against a tiring Nelson & dropped Willie twice in the 10th. In the 12th, Canelo caught Nelson again, Willie beat the count but eventually the ref stepped in to stop the fight @ 2:18 of the round.

Cards read: 104-100, 103-102 & 103-101 all for the champ.

Geez. Willie Nelson most be 70 years old and not in the best of shape at that with all his touring and weed-smoking/booze guzzling. I would've thought Canelo would put him out in the introductions....oh wait...you mean another Willie Nelson......Never mind.

No this is the 6-4 Willie that Canelo's people thought would be a light puncher.

Guys like Nelson get thrown to the wolves in my uni after the real fighter loses - like Willie did to Andrade earlier this suummer.

Battle of Britain!

Matthew Macklin finally got a 2nd chance to win back his IBF MW crown & he vowed not to let his shot go to waste.

Current WBO SMW champ, Errol Christie, won a portion of the IBF MW belt with a one punch KO back in April.

MM lost his belt years ago to Hassan N'Dam - from France via a 9th round TKO. In his fight vs. Errol he would not be denied landing an incredible 57% of his punches (375 total) & dropped EC twice in the 10th before the ref stepped in @ 1:54 of the round.

Matt came out roaring in the 10th going for the KO because he felt Errol butted him intentionally in the 9th.

After losing his title, MM reeled off 9 straight wins & now stands @ 20-1 (16 KO's).

On the undercard to the IBF MW main even, Anthony Crolla became yet another British champ with a 6th round KO of Y. Gamboa - making his 3rd defense.

A right cross from Crolla followed by a crushing left hook ended the Cuban's night & title reign.

Making his 1st defense, William Guthrie came home to Philly to face fellow PA fighter - Brian Minto.

It was Minto's 2nd title shot, he lost a 15 UD to David Haye years ago.

For Guthrie, the fight was anything but an easy 1st defense, it was a brutal give & take affair - a right cross from Brian sending the champ to the canvas for an 8 count late in the fight. A couple rounds later, Guthrie returned the favor with a brutal hook - also for a count of 8.

In the end, William's experience appeared to pay off as another hook finally ended the fight @ 2:46 of the 14th.

The judges had the fight as close as it appeared: 2 for WM, 124-122, 123-122 & one had it even @ 123 each.

Making his 4th defense, Herbie Hide imported BJ Flores from the US for this fight in London.

The 1st 3 rounds were fairly uneventful but in the 4th, Hide turned up the heat & dropped BJ for a count of 4 following a big right cross. Hide just kept punching & ended matters with a body shot @ 2:48.

Hide's now 16-0 with 15 KO's & BJ drops his 2nd, now 5-2, 3 KO's.

Looking to big fights in 2017, WBC WW champ, Ruslan Provodnikov took a stay busy defense against the durable Fredrick Lawson from Ghana.

Ruslan's pressure & power proved to be the difference over the fight as he dropped the tough African 5 times over 12 rounds & one final barrage @ the end of the round ended the fight.

Ruslan was ahead on all 3 cards: 106-102 & 106-99 twice. RP also had the PL edge: 344 (30%) to 137 (29%) in making his 5th title defense.

In a battle between 2 huge punchers, Sergey Kovalev came to Vegas for a 5th title defense & a showdown with Chris Henry.

Early on, Henry took it to the champ showing his power off but by the 3rd, SK starting giving it back to Chris.

In the 6th, Henry hit Sergey with a hard, piston like jab but Kovalev returned fire with a hard combo & ended the fight @ 1:17 of the round.

All 3 judges had SK up 48-47 who also had the PL edge: 131 (41%) to 127 (24%).

SK's now 11-0 - all KO's, Henry is 9-1-1, 9 KO's.

Kell Brook decided to pick up a paycheck with a stay busy defense before the end of the year so he headed to Germany to face Rico Mueller.

Brook did as expected as he gradually wore down the German & stepped on the gas in the 7th when he dropped Rico with a barrage, then a rib shot & finally an overhand right to end the night.

It was Kell's 2nd defense & he's now 20-0 with 13 KO's.

In real life, Aussie Jeff Horn stopped Rico in 9 rounds so this result seems about right.
