Season 37 (2055) - Once More Into the Breach

As the title implies, welcome to the 2055 season.

Good luck, have fun, and most importantly...don't die!

I shall indeed charge headlong unto the breach. I pray my players do not falter and close up the wall in G337, where there are three other teams with titles beyond Silver-- all in my conference.

The fight for the forest is ON. The Forest Raccoons think they can sit their bum in all the juiciest food bowls? No longer! The Raccoons will kick them out!

...or maybe get whooped 1-18 like against any other multi-PL-winning forum member team.

Very few changes once more. The Raccoons and Accountants can't really figure out where to tweak the existing formula (although the pen is always a solid bet...), while the Rebels have been terrible for three years in a row and can hardly get any packs to be disappointed by.

Oh, and historical packs won't shred market value for historical cards? Yeah, my ***!! KC had almost 10% of their card value molten off the books because of §%(/§$& historical packs. Prices have crashed almost across the board (except maybe Diamonds and surely Bronzes). Which totally nobody could have seen coming and won't ever be admitted.

I don't think I care at this point.

The Chicago Machine has made a few tweaks to the bench/platoon bats... Longtime stalwart Luis Aparicio is out, along with Rod Carew - let's see how Minnie Minoso and Frankie Frisch do. *SHRUG*
We're 10-0 to start the year!

P455: Lots of New Names

This week, the Huntley Red Raiders are in P455 with a lot of fresh faces, at least to me. Huntley resides in the AC East along with 2 teams with Gold championships (Valinor Eagles and Iowa Fighting Amish), 1 team with a Diamond championship (Brooklyn Deckers, which is a fantastic name, btw), and the heavily decorated Utah Stingers, owners of 1 Iron, 1 Bronze, 2 Silver, 1 Gold, 1 Diamond, and 3 Perfect championships. To Utah manager norton: may I humbly suggest changing the team nickname to the Medallions?

The AC Central is home to 2 teams with Diamond championships (the Perham Dragons and one of the few teams I recognize from an earlier league, the Pistol Pete Cowboys), as well as the SJ Bees, who have one of the more interesting team histories I've ever seen--5 Iron titles (yes, 5), but since the final Iron title in 2042, on the straight and narrow, claiming Bronze and Gold medallions on their way to Perfect. Last season was the Bees' first winning Perfect season, and they are off to a good start this year.

The AC West boasts one former Diamond champion (Jimmy Dean's Sausage), a former Gold champion (Drummond Destroyers), and a Silver champion (5DK Dragons).

So, overall, the AC is home to only 2 teams with Perfect League championships, and both Huntley and the Stingers (Medallions) are in the AC East. This means that at least 60% of the AC playoff participants this season will be looking for their first Perfect League championship; good luck to all!

Each NC division is home to at least 1 team with a Diamond championship, but only 1 NC team has claimed a Perfect League title: the NC Central Eureka Mallards, who, not coincidentally, are off to a fantastic 15-4 start. The Mallards' Perfect League title came way back in 2031 with an 85-77 team; they've made the Perfect League playoffs 14 times since, each time with a record better than 85-77, but have yet to win title #2. Viva la baseball playoffs!

The Frogs say hello from P426 this week. Greetings and salutations.

Just as I was beginning to think there were no other teams with any PL titles in P426, I noticed the 6-time PL champ Billinge Bangers one division over from me. And then I noticed the 2-time PL champ Madison Tycoons one division over from them. So, we neatly have 3 distinct front runners in each of 3 NC divisions all spaced-out-like. The AC is more wide open. My Frogs would qualify as among the whale-iest of the whales in this league.

A confluence of factors have resulted in the Frogs testing out a strategy this week. First of all, the Frogs won 120 games last week but didn't win the division and bowed out ignominiously in the wild card game. Second, you notice how plucky F2P teams employ those lefty-bonzana strategy/trickeration tactics? Why don't whales add this strategy element to an already overpowering roster of cards? Thirdly, finishing a good chunk of fresh collection missions last week leaves me with a surplus of big, thumping lefty bats. Are you seeing where this train of thought is headed? Choo choo...

So, we've gone down "that" dark, strategic (or "cheap," depending on your PoV) path of setting all ballpark factors to maximize lefty bats and minimize righty bats. In this vein, we're trotting out lefty mashers such as 100 Bonds, LIVE Yelich, 95 Fielder, 100 Gehrig, 97 Nettles, 99 Berra, and 94 Sisler. Also lefty/switch-hitting scrappers such as 90 Ichiro, 99 Gilliam, and 100 Ozzie. Poor 'ol SE Appling gets the week off.

And, because we don't do anything half-measure on this team, we're employing the old all-lefty starting staff (99 Brecheen/98 Blue/100 Santana/99 Pennock) on short pitch counts backed up by a stable of fireballing, right-handed pensmen (100 Ruffing/100 Walsh/99 Coveleski/100 Smoltz/100 Seaver...and friends).

So far being cheap seems to be paying dividends. The Frogs are 18-3, racking up PP in achievements, and have a +95 run differential before the end of day 1. What's more is my anticipated main competition--the Billinge Bangers--has an extremely right-handed lineup. And thus might fall face-first into the trap my Frogs are laying...

Hey, they say all is fair in love and war...and Perfect Team.

Wow, started off 19-3 and P453!
Frankie Frisch is fun. I'm just running with more and more gold players. It's fun.

One month in, the 14-12 Raccoons are the highlight here. Already five games behind the Forest Raccoons, and 1-2 in direct competition. We had ... no offense in April, at all. Fisk and the entire outfield played dead.

KC and Rebs are already under .500 and ready to drop further.

/end day 2 of sims

The Frogs find themselves 42-12 (+196) with a 45-9 pythag and a burgeoning 13.5 game division lead. No sir, we ain't getting punked in the wild card game once again this week. Might get punked in the DS, but not in the WC game!

The new alignment for this week (lefty cheese) might not be permanent, but it's mostly having the desired effect. The Lily Pad is now as much of a home field advantage as ever; the squad is 24-4 (.857) at home, vs 18-8 (.692) on the road. 100 Barry Bonds is on pace for 45 HR 159 RBI after being on a 50+ HR pace for most of the week so far. Super Ichiro was flirting with .400 earlier today, but is batting a meager .358 right now. SE George Sisler has returned to the lineup like a prodigal son. He has elbowed 100 Gehrig out of the lineup altogether. Sisler is really enjoying lefty cheese to the tune of .385/.411/.802 10 HR 27 RBI in just 24 starts, most impressive considering almost all of those starts came against lefty pitchers. Sisler is notoriously streaky, however, so he could fall hard and fast.

The pitching staff might be enjoying lefty cheese even moreso than the offense. The team has allowed just 134 runs in 54 games. That's good for a team-wide 2.31 ERA/2.85 FIP. The composite 2.31 team ERA would be a franchise record by a full quarter of a run. And this coming with lefty ballpark factors maxed out. The "worst" pitching performer of the season has been 100 Tom Seaver. Tom Terrific is pitching to a 4.17 ERA, but somehow finds himself with a 12-0 record working exclusively out of the bullpen in long/middle relief. Like a cat that just keeps landing on its feet. It would be rather impressive if Seaver were to post a 36-0 record alongside a 4+ ERA.

From a regular user of the lefty strat: beware the playoffs. Lefty strat's biggest disadvantage is that if the opponent just runs a decent staff of lefties, your splits get killed and you fall back down to earth. SE Sisler has good reverse splits, gotta try to find guys like him to prepare for that eventuality. But they're rare. Lefty strat is all about that regular season push so FTP teams can get a crack at a playoff berth they might have not otherwise had a shot at, even if it means they're more vulnerable to any decent manager making an adjustment in the playoffs.

The Raccoons keep chasing after the Forest Raccoons who are trying to escape with a fruit basket. Not with us! Stop! Will you hold up and share!! The gap is 7 1/2 with the Critters at 35-21. Both teams have zoomed out from the division already. Head-to-head it's 3-3 after the Critters squeezed out a series win just a few days ago.

The 25-35 Rebs have two silver achievements so far this year: a combined no-hitter and a 14-game losing streak. FOURTEEN.

No fancy achievements at all for the 22-34 Accountants. Comes with the territory, I guess...

P455: (All-Star) Break's Over, Back to Work

After a relatively slow start (15-9 in April), the Huntley Red Raiders hit their stride in May (23-4) and haven't looked back (June: 21-5; July to date: 18-3). Part of the reason is defensive improvement; the installation of SE Ozzie Smith as the starting shortstop necessitated the move of Luke Appling (vs R) and Lou Boudreau (vs L) to 2B, a position at which neither had any experience before this season. In 61 starts at 2B, Appling has trained up to a 72, and in 22 starts at 2B, Boudreau is up to a 49. (Appling is also up to a 64 at 3B, where he started training up last season and where he has 22 starts vs L so far this season).

Not surprisingly, the musical chairs infield has affected Extreme Groundballer Ed Walsh more than the other pitchers; Walsh has been dropped to the fifth starter slot with an 8-6 record and relatively high 3.46 ERA (but more representative of his actual pitching 3.01 FIP).

Offensively, it's LF Mickey Mantle's world, and everyone else is just living in it; in the AC, the Commerce Comet ranks fourth in BA (.324), third in homers (19), second in OBP (.415), second in SLG (.559), second in OPS (.974), second in OPS+ (164), second in wOBA (.421), and first in WAR (4.6). George Brett is also having a strong season (.320/.376/.497, 137 OPS+, 3.2 WAR), and Smith's Huntley debut is going well (.301/.382/.395, 114 OPS+, 3.3 WAR).

One interesting note about the standings: in both the AC and NC, if the season ended today, the 2 Wild Cards would come out of the same division as the #1 seeds. In my weekly therapeutic preparation for Division Series disappointment, here are the records of the #1 seeds vs their division mates and potential Division Series opponents:

Huntley vs Utah Stingers: 7-3
Huntley vs Valinor Eagles: 8-5

Eureka Mallards vs Murphy BRMest 1985: 8-4
Eureka Mallards vs Portland Beavers: 9-4

So, while the projected #1 seeds are winning the season series, none are blowouts, which means, as I always emphasize, the potential Wild Card teams should definitely not lose hope!

Current standings follow...

The Frogs survived a random team-wide offensive slump in yesterday's sims and are back in the saddle (80-25, +329) with a 30.5 game division lead. Giddy up. It'll come down to the wire for the NC's #1 overall seed. The Billinge Bangers (78-26, +307) have been matching the Frogs stride for hop.

The Frog offense slashed .257/.329/.415 in June, which is a woeful mark considering the roster talent and lefty Cheez Whiz strategy being employed. In July, the Frogs snapped back into shape, slashing .283/.363/.444.

Tom Seaver-as-reliever continues to be fun to watch. Although his ERA is now below 4 (currently 3.38), he's still unbeaten. That's now 21-0. Seaver is on pace to go 33-0 in 162 IP of long/middle relief. Teammate Christy Mathewson is being overshadowed, but Matty has a 13-0 record out of the pen.

The pitching staff as a whole is doing some pretty impressive things. The team ERA is 2.46 and only 272 runs have been allowed through 105 games played. A quartet of "relievers"--Red Ruffing, Ed Walsh, John Smoltz, and POTM Max Scherzer made the NC's All-Star squad.

In other random news, 100 Ozzie Smith has trained up to 48 at 2B after only 11 starts there.

Ed Walsh'll make it back up after you get your dream INF trained up and installed. Walsh has basically been a juggernaut for me 2.67 ERA vs 2.68 FIP and never less than 7 WAR in a full season. And a smattering of 'Great Gloves'. I suppose I should get him some pinch running duty as well?

It's well past the All-Star Break, so an update out of Medford is overdue. The Mashers currently sit at 64-51 with a 4-game lead on the division.

A return to neutral park factors has brought some good to the team and some bad. Tony Gwynn is hitting above .300 and the pitching staff is respectable. On the flip side, Rocky Colavito's slugging percentage is a full 100 points lower than normal. He leads the team with 12 home runs, a significant team-wide drop-off from previous years.

The pitching staff has been carrying the team. Zack Wheeler is 13-6 with a 2.91 ERA and AC-leading 1.03 WHIP; Brandon Woodruff is likewise 13-6 with a 3.25 ERA. The Mashers sent three players to the ASG, all of them pitchers: Wheeler, Kirby Yates, and Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani managed to cheese the voting algorithm because he had thrown under 20 innings at the time of voting, but was playing well on the long half of a DH platoon and as such got extra votes. Yates has a sparkling 1.54 ERA and 28 saves.

I am achingly close to completing the Sisler mission. I only need a Wally Judnich to appear on the AH.

Tom Seaver's win streak ended at 23. That was good for 7000 PP, so I'm not complaining. Christy Mathewson is now 20-0. There may be some nice PP benefits to running this cheesy reliever setup.

The team is near 20K PP so far this week after a bit of a downer last week.

It's Wildcard week for my teams.

Doubledays are in the Top 5 in the Power ratings. Unfortunately with the division alignment this week this is good enough for the 2nd wildcard spot in my conference.
