The Battle of First Place!

Oakland Oaks (13-7 .660 tied for 1st place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (13-7 .650 tied for 1st place in the PCL West)

OAK: Hugo Lopez (27-R 2-1 2.81) vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (24-R 2-2 3.16)

Lopez is a tough pitcher to hit, but he led the PCL in walks last season with 121 and has walked 18 in 25.2 IP this year (6.3/9). In his last start, he walked 7 in 5.2 IP, but still got a win. He was 1-2 against us last season, but never walked more than 2 in a game.

Johnson has won his last two starts and the walk problems he had in his first 2 starts seem to be behind him. The question today will be whether he can continue to get Javy Puente and Tim Metts out. Combined, they are 4 for 44 (.091) with no home runs against Johnson over the past 2 seasons. Jeff Galka, their #5 hitter, who hit a home run yesterday, is 0 for 12. Johnson had a tendency to left the long ball bite him last year with 22 allowed. Mario Rodriguez, the Oaks' light hitting 2nd baseman is 10 for 15 against Johnson (.667).

4:1B Tim Metts (26-L .313-67-7-20-1.126 26)

8: 2B Juan Rojas (24-S .225-71-0-8-.534 104)
9: P Bobby Johnson (24-R .125-8-0-1-.361 1)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Metropolitan Stadium
Weather: 64 F, Clear Skies, with an 18 MPH wind blowing in from right
Attendance: 17,941

Top of the First:
Carl Folkers, a sub-.200 hitter, doubles off the center field wall.... Why can we not get hitters with a BA under .200 out? Gregg Buckner walks on 4 pitches... Who's this guy on the mound? Where is P Bobby Johnson? Javy Puente swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to deep right and Folkers tags up and beats the throw to 3rd. Tim Metts takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up with 1 out... Jeff Galka flies out to center and Folkers tags up and scores without a throw. 1 to 0, Oaks. Now we get to the dangerous hitter, Mario Rodriguez, a career .250 hitter, but 10 for 15 against Johnson. He grounds out to 3rd!!

Bottom of the First:
Wait him out, fellas! Jerry Suazo doubles to left center! Brian Mitchell doubles down the right field line and Suazo scores! Tie Game: 1 to 1. Fernando Mexicano grounds out to 2nd and Mitchell moves to 3rd. A runner on 3rd with less than 2 outs... A wild pitch scores Mitchell! 2 to 1, Beavers! Glenn Snowden walks. Carlos Lopez hits one a mile high out to deep right for out #2. Jim Shippy grounds out to short.

Top of the Second:
Al Burrell lines a hit to center. Mike West lines a hit to left... P Hugo Lopez bunts one down the 3rd base line, just like you are supposed to do in this situation, but he bunts it a bit too hard and Fernando Mexicano gets to it and fires to Dave Risinger at 3rd to get the force out! Carl Folkers, the .175 hitter, lines his 2nd hit of the game to right and West scores... Tie Game: 2 to 2. Gregg Buckner flies out to deep left. 2 outs. Javy Puente grounds out to 3rd!!

Bottom of the Third:

With 1 out, Brian Mitchell walks and then steals 2nd and 3rd on consecutive pitches. With the infield in, Fernando Mexicano bounces one through the left side for a hit and Mitchell scores! 3 to 2, Beavers! Glenn Snowden draws a walk. Carlos Lopez swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses. 2 outs. Jim Shippy strikes out... I am so tempted to call up that young catcher...

Top of the Fourth:

Al Burrell singles and Mike West beats out an infield hit... Johnson cannot get anybody out EXCEPT the 3-4-5 hitters.... And I just jinxed him for them... P Hugo Lopez lays down a bunt just like his last one and we get the force at 3rd again! Carl Folkers flies out to left! We get the .175 hitter out for the first time today! Greg Buckner walks to load the bases up with 2 outs.... That is 4 walks and 6 hits in 3.2 IP for P Bobby Johnson... He has walked more than Lopez! The Bullpen is up. Javy Puente pops out to center!!!! P Johnson is at 90 pitches...

Bottom of the Fifth:
With 1 out, Glenn Snowden walks for the third time today. Carlos Lopez swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. 2 outs. Jim Shippy beats out an infield hit. Dave Risinger triples off the left center field wall and 2 runs are in!! 5 to 2, Beavers! That is his 4th triple of the season, matching his CAREER total coming into this season! They walk Juan Rojas intentionally. And we pinch hit for P Bobby Johnson. PH Oscar Trejo (30-R) is sent up. They make a pitching change. New Pitcher: Rick Nini (30-R), who has not allowed a run in 2.1 IP. He had a 2.35 ERA in 46 IP for Chicago last year, but his season ended in June with a torn rotator cuff. Trejo grounds a hit to right and Risinger scores! 6 to 2, Beavers! Jerry Suazo grounds out to the pitcher.

Bottom of the Seventh:

With 2 outs, PH Scott Plourde (24-S) makes his season debut. In 2001, he played in 10 games for the Beavers and went 2 for 37 (.054). He takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4! Jerry Suazo draws a walk. Brian Mitchell lines a hit to center and Plourde scores! 7 to 2, Beavers! Fernando Mexicano swings at an 0-2 pitch and hits a home run down the left field line!!! 10 to 2, Beavers! Glenn Snowden walks for the fifth time today, the first player in the PCL to ever do that! One fella in the NL did it. Carlos Lopez grounds one to 1st, but Tim Metts tosses it over the pitcher's head for a a 2 base error. Jim Shippy flies out to center....

The Sacramento Solons are in town to play a 4 game series through the weekend. They just won a pair of games in Hollywood and have won 5 of their last 6. We were 8-6 against them last year and 9-5 in 2001. They are currently tied for 7th in the PCL in scoring with 4.38 runs per game (Portland is 3rd with 5.52). The Solons are 7th in fewest runs allowed with 3.90 per game (Portland is still #1 with 2.95). Their run differential is +10 and ours is +54, the best in Baseball!

Sacramento Solons (13-8 .619 1 GB tied for 2nd place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (14-7 .667 in 1st place in the PCL West)

SAC: Ellis Collier (29-R 0-0 0.00) vs. POR: Steve Muir (28-R 3-1 3.08) Gold Glove(01)

This will be the 2nd start of the season for Collier. In his 1st, he faced 4 batters and got them all out with 2 strikeouts, but had to leave with an injury. He has not pitched in over 3 weeks. Last year, Collier was 2-0 against us, but we scored 4 runs in each game.

Muir won his last start, but only went 5.1 innings, though he only allowed 1 run. He has only struck out 4 batters in 26.1 IP. Last year, he struck out 5.0 per 9 IP.

9: P Steve Muir (28-R .250-8-0-2-.625 16) Gold Glove(01)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Metropolitan Stadium
Weather: 59 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 9 MPH wind blowing in from right
Attendance: 15,056

Top of the First:
Harvey Turner tries to bunt his way on, but 1B Glenn Snowden makes the play, 3-4! Bob Swanson swings at the first pitch and pops out to left. Dennis Rayner grounds out to 2nd! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:
Jerry Suazo strikes out... Brian Mitchell swings at the first pitch and loops a hit to right center. Fernando Mexicano pops out to short. Mitchell steals his 10th base of the season. Glenn Snowden hits one high and deep down the left field line and OVER the fence!! 2 to 0, Beavers! Carlos Lopez grounds out to short.

Bottom of the Fifth:
Jerry Suazo leads off with a walk and then Brian Mitchell triples to the corner in right! 3 to 0, Beavers! Fernando Mexicano hits a home run to right!! 5 to 0, Beavers! P Ellis Collier goes to take a shower. New Pitcher: Brian Beeman (30-L), a waiver claim from Miami in January. He has a 1.29 ERA in 14 IP with 2 BB and 17 SO. He gets Snowden and Lopez out.

Bottom of the Eighth:

On the Hill: Ken Moller (26-L), after a perfect 7th. Glenn Snowden leads off with a home run to left! His second tater of the day!

Won - 6 to 0

Our 3rd complete game in the last 5 games!

We had 7 hits and made no errors
Sacramento had 6 hits and made 1 error

Steve Muir (W 4-1) went 9 shutout innings (CG), allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3 (a season high). I do not know why his strikeouts have dropped so much, but it seems to be working for him. But I don't think we'll be too keen on re-signing a pitcher to a $1 million+ deal who strikes out 2 batters a game, though....

Ellis Collier (L 0-1) went 4.1 innings, gave us 5 runs, 5 hits, 2 home runs, 3 walks and struck out 3.

CF Brian Mitchell had 2 hits with a triple, stole his 10th base of the season, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 3B Fernando Mexicano hit his 6th home run of the season, drew a walk and had 2 RBI. 1B Glenn Snowden had 3 hits with 2 home runs (5 for the year) and had 3 RBI.

Sacramento Solons (13-9 .591 2 GB tied for 2nd place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (15-7 .682 in 1st place in the PCL West)

SAC: Darrell Williams (26-R 1-1 4.62) vs. POR: Frank Flores (24-R 3-1 2.45)

Williams has had 2 starts where he has gone 8 IP and allowed 2 runs and 2 starts where he got hit hard. He was 12-10 with a 3.16 ERA last year. He was 2-1 against us last year with 2 good games and one bad one.

Flores has pitched 2 straight shutouts, including a no-hitter. Last time out, he gave up 6 hits. Only 4 walks in 4 starts so far. He has never faced the Solons before, believe it or not.

Largest crowd ever, except for Opening Day!

Top of the First:

Harvey Turner ends our No-No hopes and probably our third straight shutout hopes with a triple to center... Bob Swanson swings at the first pitch and pops out to center and Turner stays put. Dennis Rayner flies out to deep left and Turner trots home. 1 to 0, Solons. Jim Holberton strikes out looking on 3 pitches!

Bottom of the First:
Jerry Suazo swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 1st, 3-1. My patience with him his getting thin... Brian Mitchell beats out an infield hit. My elation with him is growing every day! Oscar Trejo grounds a hit to center and Mitchell beats the throw to 3rd! I wish Trejo could play the outfield... Well, technically, he can, but he has no range and no arm. Fernando Mexicano lines a hit to right and Mitchell scores! Tie Game: 1 to 1. Carlos Lopez strikes out on 3 pitches... Dave Risinger beats out an infield hit and the bases are loaded with 2 outs. A.J. Lee breaks his bat, but bloops a hit to right and 2 runs score!! 3 to 1, Beavers! Jim Shippy grounds one to 2nd, but former Gold Glover Jim Holberton boots it! P Frank Flores grounds out to 1st, 3-1.

Bottom of the Second:

Jerry Suazo lines a hit to center and Brian Mitchell doubles down the left field line! Oscar Trejo lines out to left and the runners hold. A wild pitch scores Suazo! 4 to 1, Beavers! Fernando Mexicano lines one to short, but it hits off the heel of Angel Arana's glove for an error and Mitchell scores! 5 to 1, Beavers! With 2 outs, Dave Risinger lines a hit to center. That does it for P Darrell Williams. New Pitcher: Brian Beeman (30-L) with a 1.23 ERA in 14.2 IP. A.J. Lee pops out to left.

Bottom of the Fifth:
A.J. Lee leads off with a home run to left! 6 to 1, Beavers!

Bottom of the Sixth:

New Pitcher: Jim Fabre (24-R), a rookie with an 0.63 ERA in 14.1 IP and 13 SO. Brian Mitchell lines his fourth hit of the day to left center. Oscar Trejo doubles to left center! Fernando Mexicano walks on 4 pitches to load the bases up with no outs. Carlos Lopez strikes out on 3 pitches.... Dave Risinger beats out an infield hit and Mitchell scores! 7 to 1, Beavers! A.J. Lee strikes out. Jim Shippy pops out to left...

Top of the Seventh:
Jim Holberton walks and we get the Bullpen stirring. Larry Pierce lines a hit to left, only the 3rd of the game for Sacramento. Joaquin Hernandez walks to load them up with no outs... Call to the Bullpen: Vic Kyzer (24-L). Mario Vasquez grounds into a 4-6-3 double play and Holberton scores. 7 to 2, Beavers. Angel Arana strikes out looking!

Bottom of the Seventh:
With 1 out, Jerry Suazo grounds a double down the right field line. Brian Mitchell, looking for his fifth hit of the day, has the patience to take a 3-2 pitch for ball 4! With 2 outs, Fernando Mexicano hits a home run to right!!! 10 to 2, Beavers! That is already the sixth time we have hit double digits this year! Our record is seven for the season, set in 2001.

Won - 10 to 2

We had 18 hits (ties the season high) and made no errors
Sacramento had 4 hits and made 2 errors

Frank Flores (W 4-1) went 6+ innings, allowed 2 runs, 3 hits, 4 walks and struck out 2.
LHP Vic Kyzer faced 2 batters and got 3 outs with a strikeout.
LHP Victor Alvarez went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 4.

Darrell Williams (L 1-2) went 1.2 innings, gave us 5 runs (4 earned), 8 hits, no walks and struck out 1. He threw a WP.

RF Jerry Suazo had 2 hits with a double and scored 2 runs. CF Brian Mitchell went 4 for 4 with a double and a walk and scored 4 runs. 1B Oscar Trejo had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. 3B/LF Fernando Mexicano had 2 hits with his 7th home run of the season, drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had 5 RBI. He has a home run in 3 straight games. LF Carlos Lopez hit a double. SS Dave Risinger had 3 hits and an RBI. 2B A.J. Lee had 3 hits with his 2nd home run and 3 RBI. It appears that he has taken over the 2nd base job from Juan Flores, though tomorrow will be a scheduled day off for him.

For Sacramento, LF Harvey Turner went 3 for 3 with a triple and a walk and scored a run. He had 3 of the Solons' 4 hits.

2nd record crowd in a row!

Bottom of the First:
Jerry Suazo pops out to left. Brian Mitchell strikes out. Fernando Mexicano takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Glenn Snowden strikes out...

Bottom of the Second:
Carlos Lopez lines a hit to center and Dave Risinger takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. It is amazing how much he is walking this year! He now has 13 walks and 76 AB. Last year, he had 25 BB and 413 AB. With 1 out, Juan Rojas gets beaned to load the bases up. Rondey Moe grounds a hit to center and 2 runs score!! 2 to 0, Beavers! Jerry Suazo walks on 4 pitches to load them back up. Brian Mitchell takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to force in a run! 3 to 0, Beavers! Fernando Mexicano flies out to deep right, but not deep enough to keep P Moe from being thrown out at the plate by Dennis Rayner...

Bottom of the Third:
Glenn Snowden walks on 4 pitches, the 5th walk issued by rookie P Bob Hill. A wild pitch sends Snowden to 2nd. Carlos Lopez takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Dave Risinger swings at the first pitch and grounds into a force at 2nd, 3-6, and Snowden goes to 3rd. Jim Shippy swings at 3-2 pitch and grounds into a 4-6-3 double play... There ain't no Shippy magic this year...

Bottom of the Fourth:

With 1 out, P Rondey Moe lines a hit to left center. Jerry Suazo grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. Brian Mitchell beats out an infield hit. Fernando Mexicano grounds a hit to right to load the bases up with 2 outs. Glenn Snowden lines a hit to center and 2 runs score!! 5 to 0, Beavers! That sends rookie P Bob Hill packing. New Pitcher: Ken Moller (26-L) with a 3.77 ERA in 14.1 IP. Carlos Lopez grounds out to short.

Top of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Jon Weekley (27-R). With all the complete games of late and the blowouts, our Bullpen has not gotten much work. With 2 outs, Harvey Turner lines a hit to right center. The Bullpen gets up. Can't waste time with guys that have not pitched in a week... Ralph McKinney grounds a double over the 3rd base bag... PH Eddie Dyer (27-L) grounds another double down the left field line and both runners score... 5 to 3, Beavers. Call to the Bullpen: Vic Kyzer (24-L). He is one who HAS gotten some work lately, but the tying run is at the plate and they have 7 left-handers in their lineup... Jim Holberton lines out to left!

Bottom of the Seventh:

New Pitcher: Rick Iverson (36-L), who made his season debut with a scoreless inning against us yesterday. He was with the Royals the past two years and signed a minor league contract with Sacramento in February. With 1 out, Glenn Snowden hits a home run to left! 6 to 3, Beavers! Our fifth straight game with 6 or more runs! Ties the team record. We had a string of 5 last year. With 2 outs, Dave Risinger draws a walk. Jim Shippy lines a hit to center! Risinger goes to 3rd. Back to back double digit games and our seventh time this year, tying our all time season record on May 3!! That does it for P Iverson. New Pitcher: Duane Rokita (29-R), who was their closer for the past two seasons with 78 SV, but has been displaced this year by ex-Beaver David Fuentes. Rokita has not allowed a run in 7 IP this season. Fernando Mexicano grounds a hit to to right and rookie RF Brent Ray overruns the ball for an error and Suazo scores! 11 to 3, Beavers! Sacramento Solons (13-11 .542 4 GB tied for 3rd place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (17-7 .708 in 1st place in the PCL West)

SAC: Mike McLane (25-R 3-0 1.80) vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (24-R 3-2 3.23)

McLane is their #1 starter. He was the first overall pick in the 2001 B Leagues Draft, the year we took Fernando Mexicano with the 2nd pick. He has extensive injury troubles. In 2001, he managed to pitch all of 3 innings for the Solons. They were hitless innings and he struck out 3. In 2002, he did not pitch for the Solons at all. He had 4 starts in Calgary (A) with a 2.57 ERA. He is technically not a rookie, because the time he has spent on the DL counts as Major League service time, but those 3 innings in 2001 were the extent of his Major League experience before this season. His last start ended early with a sore back. SD Oscar Cervantes says he is the best pitch alive when he can go and he can go today, unfortunately....

Johnson, who was picked 12th in that same 2001 B Leagues Draft, has won his last 3 starts, though his most recent outing was not all that pretty. He walked 4 in 5 IP after we had thought his early season control troubles had been licked. He is averaging 5.0 BB/9 so far this season after averaging 2.1/9 in his first two seasons.

We are in San Diego for the shortest road trip in history. We'll play two games here before we head back home. The Padres just won 2 of 3 up in Los Angeles over the weekend, winning games by scores of 1 to 0 and 2 to 1 and losing, 11 to 5. We were just here two weeks ago and swept them in 3 games. They are last in the PCL in scoring with 2.92 runs per game (Portland is tied for 1st with the Seals at 5.84!). They are hitting .201 as a team (last) and we are up to .273 (4th). They are 11th in fewest runs allowed with 4.67 per game (Portland is still #1 with 2.80). Their run differential is -42 and ours is +76, the best in Baseball! We are 17-8, but 3 games UNDER our Pythagorean projection!

Portland Beavers (17-8 .680 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
San Diego Padres (9-15 .375 7.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL West)

POR: Bill Woodward (22-R 2-1 3.96) Rookie vs. SD: Bobby Wolfe (26-R 2-2 4.60)

Woodward pitched a CG 5 hitter last time out, giving up a home run with 2 outs in the 9th to spoil the shutout.

Wolfe has given up at least 4 runs in each of his last 4 starts, one of which was here against the Beavers. We scored 5 runs (4 earned) in 3.2 IP.

We put RP Denny Jennissen (29-R) on the Disabled List and we optioned C Jim Shippy (32-R) and RF Jose Julio (29-R) to Vancouver (A). We recalled RP Jim Kokos (29-R) and LF Kim Springer (22-L) and purchased the contract of C Tim Higbee (20-S).

Shippy just is not hitting a lick and Higbee has to be at least as good as Shippy has been. C Rick Mansoor, who hit so well for us last year, has hit a little bit this year, but after grounding into 1 DP in 120 AB last year, he has 4 in 46 AB this season. Springer did not set the world afire in his time in Vancouver (.208), but Carlos Lopez is doing nothing but striking out lately.

Portland Beavers (17-9 .654 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
San Diego Padres (10-15 .400 6.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL West)

POR: Steve Muir (28-R 4-1 2.29) Gold Glove(01) vs. SD: Pablo Venegas (23-R 1-1 2.87) Rookie

Muir has won 3 in a row with a 6 hit shutout his last time out.

The last time Venegas took the mound was against us almost 3 weeks ago. He has not been injured. He took the loss that day, but pitched well, holding us to 3 runs in 7 IP.

We are in Dallas to play the PCL West division leading Eagles a 4 game series. The just lost 3 of 4 in Sacramento. We were 3-5 against them last season and 1-7 in 2001. They are 3rd in scoring in the PCL with 5.39 runs per game (Portland is up to 2nd with 5.42). we have scored 1 more run than they have. They lead the PCL in BA (.290) and SB (36). We are hitting .277 (3rd) and have stolen 25 bases (9th). The Eagles are 3rd in fewest runs allowed with 3.81 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.00). Their run differential is +49 and ours +75.

We are back home to play the Los Angeles Angels a 3 game series over the weekend. They just split 4 games in Salt Lake City. We split a pair of games with them to open the season here. They are 15th in scoring in the PCL with 3.29 runs per game (Portland is down to #4 with 4.89). 4.89 runs per game, but 3 total in the last 4... The Angels are 6th in fewest runs allowed with 3.97 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.11). Their run differential is -23 and ours is +62. We are now tied with Dallas for the best, but we know who the better team is...
