Walkers news: August 21 -- St. Louis 7, Cedar Rapids 5
Record: 65-62, 3rd, 5 GB Quad City
St. Louis jumped out to a 7-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the first inning and two in the third and another in the fourth before holding on for a 7-5 win over Cedar Rapids at Busch Stadium (1997). The victory extended St. Louis' win streak to eight games. Alan Dondero set the early tone with a home run to lead off the bottom of the first inning against Golden Grapplers starter Madison Bumgarner. The next four batters would also reach base, Romy Gonzalez adding a two-run double in the process. Bo Bichette plated the inning's fourth run with a sacrifice fly. In the fourth inning, Rhys Hoskins coaxed a lead-off walk from Bumgarner before being eliminated when Andrew Benintendi hit into a fielder's choice. Romy Gonzalez followed with a single, and Benintendi scored on a Jared Thomas double which led to Bumgarner's exit. Reliever Yeankarlos Lleras got Bo Bichette to ground out, but it didn't prevent Gonzalez from scoring. St. Louis added another run in the fourth. Benintendi reached on a two-out single off Lleras before a walk to Gonzalez and Jared Thomas reaching on an error by second baseman Terrin Vavra loaded the bases. Benintendi then scored on a wild pitch by Lleras. Cedar Rapids would make it a game. It started with a two-run homer from Vavra off Walkers starting pitcher Alex Faedo in the fifth. Sam Cohen then smacked a three-run homer off Faedo in the seventh, slicing the deficit to 7-5. But the Walkers' bullpen was lock down from there to close out the win. Due to the two homers, Faedo (8-9) would allow five runs on seven hits in his 6.1 innings. John Curitss closed out the seventh inning. Nick Lodolo worked a scoreless eighth inning and recorded the first two outs in the ninth. Phil Maton struck out Jose Leyva to end it for his second save. |

Argenis Batista worked eight shutout inning and allowed just one hit before exiting with an injury in the top of the ninth, helping St. Louis to a 2-0 win over Green Bay at Busch Stadium (1997). The lone hit allowed by Batista was a double by Bobby Bradley to lead off the fifth inning. Batista retired the next three batters to leave Bradley stranded. He struck out eight to go with the one walk. John Curtiss relieved Batista and retired the next three batters for his second save. The River Walkers got the only run they would need in the third when Alek Thomas drew a one-out walk from Long Haulers starting pitcher Gerrit Cole. Walkers news: August 28 -- Chicago 7, St. Louis 2
Record: 68-66, 3rd, 5.5 GB Quad City
Down 1-0, Chicago took control with four runs in the third inning and broke it open with three in the fourth as the G-Men went on for a 7-2 win over St. Louis at Wrigley Field (1979). The win enabled Chicago to take the final two games of their three-game series against the River Walkers. Walkers starting pitcher Jimmy Lambert's inability to throw strikes played a big part in the G-Men's outburst. In the third, he walked two of three hitters and also made a wild pitch to put runners at second and third with two outs. Brandon Nimmo then tied it when he drove in Victor Caratini with a ground out. A third walk, this one to Jarred Kelenic, put runners at first and second before a second wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Cruz Calderon was issued an intentional walk to load the bases. Matt Wallner then plated two runs with a single. Yet another single, from Nolan Jones, put Chicago ahead 4-1. In the fourth, Lambert again struggled to throw strikes with another walk and wild pitch. Nimmo drove in the inning's first run with a double. Kelenic plated the other two when he followed with another double. G-Men starting pitcher Jake Mullholland (9-9) worked five innings, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out six and walked one. Seven relievers followed Mullholland to the mound. Trevor Hildenberger (1.1 IP) began the march. He was followed by Taylor Rogers (0.2). Jamie Callahan (0.1), James Pazos (1.0), Tyler Chatwood (0.0), Danny Barnes (0.0) and Ken Giles (0.2). |

Walkers news: August 29 -- Quad City 6, St. Louis 5
Record: 68-67, 3rd, 6.5 GB Quad City
Luken Baker's RBI single capped a two-run bottom of the ninth inning as Quad City rallied for a 6-5 win over St. Louis at Fenway Park (1970). The River Walkers jumped out to a 5-1 lead but could not sustain it as once again its bullpen, particularly its back end, was unable to slam the door. An Andrew Benintendi double off Thunder relief pitcher Luke Weaver plated Nick Poirier with what would be St. Louis' final run in the top of the fifth as its lead grew to four runs. Baker took a big chunk out of the Walkers lead in the fifth inning, hitting a three-run homer off Walkers starter Freddy Tarnok. Tarnok had just been called up from AAA Memphis after Argenis Batista was forced to miss the start because of back tightness. Jake Brentz opened the ninth on the mound for St. Louis and it went south right away with a walk to lead-off hitter Jose Ramirez followed by a wild pitch which moved him to second. Ka'ai Tom followed with a double, bringing Ramirez home with the tying run. Edwin DIaz replaced Brentz and was not any better hitting the first batter he faced Duke Kinamon. Baker followed with his game-winning hitter, as St. Louis two supposed closers failed to retire any of the four batters they faced. The blown save was Brentz's third of the season. Diaz already has chalked up seven. Thunder starting pitcher Evan Steele allowed four runs on three hits over four innings. Luke Weaver handled the fifth and sixth innings, allowing the Walkers final run. Daniel Ritcheson worked two scoreless innings, getting it to the ninth. Brenan Hanifee (9-1) pitched around a hit in the ninth, which set himself to earn his ninth win of the season. |

Record: 69-67, 3rd, 5.5 GB Quad City
Alex Faedo pitched seven shutout innings and a pair of relievers finished it off as St. Louis shutout Quad City 6-0 at Fenway Park (1970). Faedo (10-9) scattered six hits in his seven innings. He struck out five and walked two. John Curtiss worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning, Edwin Diaz handled the ninth without allowing a run. A pair of runs in the top of the second inning put the River Walkers ahead for good. Romy Gonzalez led off with a single off Thunder starting pitcher Izzy San Juan. He moved to third when Jared Thomas followed with a double. Rhys Hoskins put St. Louis on the board with a single. Faedo hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Thomas with the inning's second run. Thomas led off the fourth with a single off San Juan and later scored on an Alan Dondero ground out. Dondero led off what would-be a two-run sixth with a single off Davison Gonzalez. Dondero stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball. Bo Bichette later walked, moved to third on an Andrew Benintendi double and scored on a Jared Thomas ground out. St. Louis made it 6-0 in the eighth. Alek Thomas led off with a double off Justus Sheffield. A pair of walks moved him to third and he scored on a Bo Bichette sacrifice fly. |

Down 2-0, Quad City scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to propel the Thunder to a 4-2 win over St. Louis at Fenway Park (1970). An RBI single by Romy Gonzalez and a bases-loaded walk to Jean Carmona, both from Thunder starter Adam Haseley, in the top of the first inning helped stake St. Louis to a quick 2-0 lead. The Thunder wiped that deficit out in the second. Daniel Johnson Jr. started a big day with a lead-off single off Walkers starter Argenis Batista. A single by Miguel Gomez moved Johnson to third with one out. Andrew Bethea made it 2-1 with a sacrifice fly. Haseley followed with a double, evening it at 2-2. Ka'ai Tom then came through with a bases-loaded, two-out single to make it 3-2. Quad City made it 4-2 in the third when Johnson led off with a homer. Walkers news: Sept. 1 -- St. Louis 2, Quad City 0
Record: 70-68, 3rd, 5.5 GB Quad City
Steven Brault went the distance in what in today's game is a rarity, tossing a four-hit shutout in St. Louis 2-0 win over Quad City at Fenway Park (1970). The win allowed the River Walkers to split their four-game series with the Thunder. Singles to Shane Shiffelt and Jose Ramirez were the only hits Brault allowed. He also struck out three and walked two. The game's only runs came off the bat of Andrew Benintendi, who cranked a two-run homer off Quad City starting pitcher Brent Honeywell in the top of the sixth. Bo Bichette, batting in front of Benintendi, had singled to get in base before the big blow. |
