Requesting Help/Support for a 34 T/162-145 Reg. Season Games/AL-NL Conferences w/8 and 9 teams.

Hello,

This is my first time posting ever on OOTP Forums! I'm hoping I receive success from it! Anyways, here is what I'm respectfully requesting:

34 MLB Teams (17 teams in AL and NL)

Two divisions (Western and Eastern) for each conference

AL Western Division will have nine teams
AL Eastern Division will have eight teams
NL Western Division will have eight teams
NL Eastern Division will have nine teams

Regular Season Format

145 (to 162) regular season games
-Four-game series against Division teams
*Three-game series against Division teams (if needed)
-Three-game series against Same-Conference teams
-Two-game series against Interleague teams

Current created proposal:

AL Western/NL Eastern (9 teams)
64 Divisional Games - Two series of four games against their 9-team division.
24 Divisional Games - One series of three games against their 9-team division.
24 Same Conference Games - One series of three games against their same conference 8-team division.
34 Interleague Games - One series of two games against 17-team NL/AL conference.

Total Amount of Games: 146 Regular Season Games

AL Eastern/NL Western (8 teams)
84 Divisional Games - Three series of four games against their 8-team division.
27 Same Conference Games - One series of three games against their same conference 9-team division.
34 Interleague Games - One series of two games against 17-team NL/AL conference.

Total Amount of Games: 145 Regular Season Games

Problem: I would like to have the same amount of games for both divisions, but I having problems with getting the equal amount of games for both divisions (9 and 8 team divisions). I think I'm overthinking this, so I'm hoping someone will help me with this issue. I would like to stay in the area of 145-162 regular season games, and I have no preference of who plays who, when, and where. If there is no solution, I'm comfortable with having this schedule made by whoever wants to help me. Thanks! I hope I did this right!

Welcome! That is a good description of what you are wanting. Hopefully we can help get you something satisfactory.

Your math is right - the numbers of games will just not work out exactly the same that way. So the first question for you is, are you okay if the number of games against teams in a division are not exactly the same? For example, would it be okay if teams in a 9-team division did not play exactly 11 games against each other, like maybe play some 10 games, some 11, some 12?

That will be pretty much necessary to get a solution. And the differences should only need to be small.

The numbers of games then could be worked out to something even between both types of divisions. But that still leaves making the series work out too. The way you were planning would have the teams in the 8-team divisions playing 47 series and the teams in the 9-team divisions playing 49 series. We want to get those numbers to match also.

I will think on this more and try to come up with some ideas of how to get it to work.

Awesome! I'm perfectly fine with having a different amount of division games for 9-team divisions. If you have to increase the number of games played to even out series, I'm fine with that also! In my OOTP, I'm planning to add another playoff seed, so I will need to shorten the original MLB schedule by a week or so. Thanks for the help!

I think I have the initial layout set for something. At this point I am not sure when I can get to completing. It may be in the next day or two, but it may be into next week. Hopefully no longer than that.

The plan is 156 games per team, and I am aiming to it into a length a week shorter than MLB. How to fit the series together with the mix of 2-game, 3-game, and 4-games series takes some planning. It will probably not be too realistic, but I believe that I see how to fit it together.

The mix of games are:

8-team divisions
  • 13 games against 6 teams in division, 15 games against 1 team in division
  • 3 games against 9 teams in other division in league
  • 2 games against 16 teams in other league, 4 games against 1 team in other league
9-team divisions
  • 12 games against 8 teams in division
  • 3 games against 8 teams in other division in league
  • 2 games against 16 teams in other league, 4 games against 1 team in other league

So basically pretty close to what you were planning, but...
  • Several more games per team
  • Play one interleague opponent in an extra 2-game series
  • 8-team division has one opponent played in a couple more games than the rest
  • More of the series are 3-game and fewer are 4-game

This is perfect! I don't see a problem with any part of the schedule. I know it's going to be a bit weird cause of the odd amount of teams, but this is what I want. If possible, could you alternate the home series with interleague matchups each year? For ex., CLE at WAS (2019), WAS at CLE (2020); If it's tedious or requires more maneuvering, don't worry about it! Once again, thanks man! Take your time, no rush!

It did not come out as cleanly as I was hoping, but I got something that I will post below. It may be worth checking out before you just run with it because there were some extra steps needed since the layout was more complicated.

Regarding the alternating matchups, I would think you would want it for the interdivision games within the league too, since they are also only one series per year. That makes it pretty complicated to cover every team playing at every other team in short order. What the game does itself in carrying forward is randomize the teams in each division from one year to the next.

I set up the schedule so that there is a mix of home/away in those single matchup cases - the AL Eastern teams play some AL Western teams home and some away, some NL Eastern teams home and some away, and some NL Western teams home and some away.

So in your example of CLE at WAS (2019), there is basically an equal chance of 2020 being CLE at WAS or being WAS at CLE. Just like you could flip a coin a bunch of times and get heads several times in a row, you would occasionally have get something like CLE at WAS for several seasons in a row. But there will be substantial variety across the years.
