Actually, two: American rules football and Canadian rules football.

Football (soccer) - Played by all players on the field kicking the ball, hence football.

Football (NFL) - Played by only two players (punter/kicker) kicking the ball hence hmmm football

By the way despite living in England I love both and will probably buy BTS before FM.

Not that I should get involved in this argument but two things worth pointing out.

a)Soccer is an English word which was used to to differentiate the sport with Football, or as the English now commonly call it: Rugby.
2)Etymologically, the word "Football" probably has little to do with kicking the ball with you foot. It means the game is played on Foot.

Am I the only one to think that [American] Football should be properly called American Rugby?

The name Rugby comes from the School (Rugby School in Rugby) which codified football (as it was then) into the set of rules we know as Rugby.

There's a great line in Rambo 3 when Rambo's guide inquires: " What it is football? You play with your foot?"

Rambo replies: "Not really."

You can't play either without using your feet. Thus the name 'football' seems completely appropriate for both sports.

And Canadian football kept more of those rugby roots than has American football. Indeed, for many years Canadian football was officially referred to as rugby football, e.g. the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union.

Don't forget Australian rules football, American football is a sport that I love but Aussie rules has my heart. I will not even get FM this year because of BTS, I can't wait for this game.

Definitely cool to watch. Especially some of the wild angles these players make the kicks. I also think the US has an Australian football league. But not sure of the details.

I really enjoy watching footy. A couple decades ago ESPN used to televise it.
