Okay...could it be because the nations file doesn't update?

I don't see how....the nations file only controls the percentages and you can set that from in game....

Markus really needs to fix this; I will see what I can come up with, but don't hold your breath....

In the old versions, if you tried to change name.dat files you'd change all the player's names, because the game looked at a specific location in the database for the player's name. When you changed the .dat file, you changed the name in the location that the game was referencing. I got around this in my Era Appropriate Name Set, by using the exact same name set for every era and only changing frequencies.

Like I said, I've done this before. I have a 19th century names file (might even be yours, but I'm not sure). Usually once I get to 1920 or so, I put the original game name files back in and use the historical names, then switch to modern in the 70's or so.

I've done this many, many times and it's always worked perfectly. I just swap the files, re-import, and it works.

So I'm very, very confused as to why this is not working.

I don't understand how to install these. I can't find the names.txt anywhere, but I do find names.dat and foreign.dat, etc. But I don't know how to install this.

And does everyone agree that this is an improvement? Just making sure.

They're not in your saved games folder. Open up the ootp10 directory. Click on the database folder.

That's where they are.

And yes, this is a big improvement.

If you decide to use these names in an already existing league, be sure to back your league up and test the results at least through one draft.

Until Markus does something about the importing feature, this can be hit or miss....

Can I re-name the original files and leave them in that folder? Or will it cause a glitch in the game? I want to name them to nations_bu.txt or or something like that or nations_backup.txt

Can I do that?

Yes, the game will ignore the original files if you rename them....

I drafted a SS named 'Terry mo'. Was the "m" supposed to be capitalized?

What's the player's nationality?

There are no last names of 'mo' in the sets I edited (0,1,2,3, and 39). There ARE two 'Mo's in foreign sets I didn't touch, but they are both capitalized in the files I provided.

I suspect you re-imported the file into a league already started with another name set, which, as I mentioned, can sometimes produce strange results.....

Hopefully, Markus will address this in a patch soon.....

Well, there are no mo's without a cap in the name set.....

You can look for yourself....

I have not seen this happen before on a league created with the files....

I haven't noticed that happening, although it's possible that some players got changed and I just haven't run into it. I don't think the names.dat file has any effect on names that have already been created.

I'll take a closer look when I can. Also, I've only got one OOTPX league, and I might have just been lucky when I did the copypasta.

Swapping the names.dat file does indeed change every player's name, new and old......

All I know is, I did it, and I didn't see anyone's name change.

2 questions...

1. Wil this mod work with OOTP11?

2. If not, do you plan on making one that does?

QD I can atest that replacing names.dat with the default (or non QD file) caused ALL the names to get reset. NOT FUN.

The way I solved this for my solo league to support subsequent changes was to reimport the names and ethinicity database. This brought in the name names and prevented then game from wiping out my custom names.

I ran tests with several OOTP 11 leagues during the beta and QDs text files (though not the DATS) work with 11.
