The weeks leading up to the draft were very stressful for Vegas Management. Many talented players were left unprotected, and although many teams tried offering trades to protect some of their players, GM Dustin had no interest in listening. In one of his most recent press releases he explained his reasons for this. "We are coming into the league as the 31st team, but we have no intention of finishing 31st. Please stop soliciting us with meaningless offers as we are here to be competitive all season long and for seasons to come. If we like him, we will take him." Such a bold and direct statement. Many general managers around the league feel very disgruntled about this. These choices have surely tarnished GM Dustin's reputation around the league as an uncooperative, hard headed manager. However this does not seem to phase Dustin.

We here at The Vegas Star News love this mentality and drive that GM Dustin brings to Vegas. Its bold, its risky, and it screams VEGAS!

That being said here is our top 3 picks of the draft.

1. Petr Mrazek -- Pick Quality: A-

As the unquestioned number 1 goalie for Vegas, Mrazek has been good for Detroit over the passed few seasons but has always fought for the number 1 job with Jimmy Howard. Despite being younger, Mrazek has been slightly more inconsistent, therefore forcing Detroit to leave him unprotected. We expect Mrazek to start 60 games or more for Vegas this season with at least 20 wins.

2. Matt Dumba -- Pick Quality: A

Although Vegas drafted a handful of quality right handed defense man, the standout of this group was clearly Dumba. Similar to Mrazek's situation, in that Dumba has been playing 3rd pairing minutes behind some stellar defense in Minnesota. Despite this, Dumba has steadily increased his offensive output since first joining the league and we expect this trend to continue. If Dumba plays in all 82 games we expect him to finish with around 35 points again.

3. Bobby Ryan -- Pick Quality: B+
Tied with Jack Johnson as the 3rd oldest player on the team behind Gaborik (35) and Plekanec (34) Bobby Ryan is a sure bet at leading the Vegas offense in points. At only 30 years old he still has plenty left to give and being given the opportunity at being the star player again might just jolt Ryan into getting back to the 50-60 point plateau.

Sleeper Pick: Marian Gaborik -- Pick Quality: B-
A lot of people were scratching their heads when they saw this one, as were we when we saw this. However once healthy Gaborik has the potential to ease into the top line and start producing. If Gaborik suits up for at least 40 games we expect him to finish with around 30 points.

Wasted Pick: Kevin Connaughton -- Pick Quality: C-
In all fairness Arizona did not have much to offer in terms of value or quality. However Vegas has a plethora of left handed defense man, so we are still scratching our heads on this one. We expect Kevin to play for Vegas's Farm team and be used on a call up basis due to injury. At 27 years old we don't expect much progression from him or much offensive output if and when he does play.

We will bring you all current news surrounding the Golden Knights as they progress throughout the season as well as any other formidable news! Stay tuned for our next update mid September.

Development Report

Nearly a full month has passed since the Vegas Golden Knights were inaugurated into the league. Many rumors have come and gone in the past month of possible trades between the Golden Knights and other teams however no significant moves have been executed.

Klim Kostin was recently claimed off waivers by the Golden Knights, which bolsters the RW position. Kostin is now the 3rd highest ranked prospect for Vegas behind the likes of Eric Brannstrom and Malcolm Subban.

With training camp rounding out today, we've decided to deliver you some updates on the players who stood out most to us during camp.

1. Cody Glass
It was an impressive battle between Glass and Suzuki who had outstanding showings in camp. However despite the waves they both made, general manager Dustin explained that he is not planning on rushing them, and that they will be sent down after preseason is over.

2. Nick Suzuki
As mentioned above, Suzuki was doing everything right at camp to show the training staff and management what he is truly capable of. Alas at only 18 years of age, he wont be seeing any major playing time with the big club. We are excited to see how he does during the pre season!

3. Ville Pokka
Was the best of all the youngest defense man on the team. Outplaying, out skating and generally out performing, he showed us that he wants to be on the team. We expect him to come in as the 7th d-man to start the year or possibly call up if injuries occur.

4. Calvin Pickard
Pickard came out ahead of Grubauer and will be the clear number 2 behind Mrazek for the upcoming season. At only 25 years old both still have room for improvement but for now its clear that Pickard has a step up on the rest. It will be exciting to see how they perform during pre season!

With camp finishing today we are eagerly waiting the first pre season game. Its unclear now which players will be used or left aside, but we assume the four players mentioned above will be given an extended look during the preseason.

1-6-0 Pre Season

With only one win under there belt, the newest team to join the league had trouble scoring goals during the preseason. Albeit they only iced a roster close to opening night against Pittsburgh and that proved to be quite successful. Bobby Ryan found the back of the net twice in that contest and added a helper to boot. Shipachyov, Eakin and Pokka were the only other players to record at least two points in that game. Otherwise the rest of the preseason was fairly quiet.

Subban played one game and was bombarded for 6 goals against vs the Red Wings. Pickard and Grubauer both saw 2 starts, however Grubauer outplayed Pickard by only allowing 3 goals in each of his contests. We assume Grubauer will be backup to Mrazek who saw 3 starts and came up with a big win against Pittsburgh, stopping 21 of 22 shots.

Will Vegas finish dead last in the league? We don`t think so, but will they finish bottom 5? We say yes. Unless management steps in and shakes things up drastically we do not think the Golden Knights will fair well this season.

There have been rumors that GM Dustin has been talking to RW Jiri Hudler and Jerome Iginla. Both seasoned veterans in the NHL, either could add some extra fire power in the top 9. We see a nice fit for Hudler to slot in on a line with former world cup teammate Tomas Plekanec and youngster Dimitrij Jaskin. Despite Hudler`s off season shenanigans of him demanding drugs on a plane from a flight attendant, we believe that Hudler could still contribute to the team offensively. At only 33 years old he still has several years left to give, although he will need to pass a drug test and prove that he is ready to play.

In other news, Jack Johnson strained his foot during preseason and will be held out of the first game and is considered day to day. Also Ryan Strome was injured, but the details have not yet been released. Consider him day to day for now. Shea Theodore also tore his flexor tendon on September 29th and will be sidelined for 3 to 4 months.

Other Injuries

Sami Vatanen - Torn Labrum - Out 2 Weeks
Marian Gaborik - Knee Soreness - Out 4 Weeks
Reid Duke - Seperated Shoulder - Indefinite
Brendan Gaunce - Shoulder Soreness - Out 2 Months
Ryan Strome - Unidentified - Day to Day

Here are the projected lineups for opening night:

0-2-1 Season Record

Johnson back, Gaborik return delayed

The Vegas Golden Knights and their fans will be happy to know that Jack Johnson will be returning to action tomorrow October 13th at home versus the Detroit Red Wings. Having only missed the first three games of the season, Johnson will slot in on the 2nd unit with Ian Cole and will quarter back the top PP. Expect Johnson to log heavy minutes and have an immediate impact for the team.

Ryan Strome is also back in action after missing only the first two games of the season. Turns out his injury was a false alarm, and was feeling much better only a few days later. His return immediately paid dividends when he scored the tying goal in a 3-2 overtime loss to Arizona. He should continue to produce all season long if he stays on the 2nd line.

Unfortunately Vegas will have to wait for Gaborik's return to the fold. He experienced a setback with his knee and is still going through a lot of pain. He was expected to miss another week or two at most, but now there is no exact time line for his return. The team and the fans eagerly await his first taste of action in Vegas!

No additional news surrounding any FA signings or trade rumors at this time. If the team continues to struggle however, we can only assume that GM Dustin will make the necessary moves to try and keep his team in a competitive position this season.

Vatanen back, Struggles continue

Vatanen will be back in action tonight at home against St. Louis.
In consequence, Engellend was waived and if no one claims the 35 year old defense man he will report to the Chicago Wolves.

In Johnson's return versus Detroit, he played a huge factor getting a hooking penalty which lead to a game misconduct. As soon as he got out of the penalty box, Johnson took a pass from Dumba and scored the tying goal at 2-2 with only one minute left in the 2nd. This has been Vegas's only win and they went on to win 5-2.

Can we expect the same kind of game for Vatanen in his return? We believe so.

2 Assists for Vatanen in Return, Vegas picks up the W

As was the case with Johnson, Vatanen had an immediate positive impact in joining the team for his first game of the 2017 campaign. He logged 19:48 of ice time and had 1SOG and 4BKS, as well as 2 helpers to boot. All while playing on the 2nd unit with Ian Cole, While Johnson was promoted to the first unit for the game.

Vatanen should continue to produce all season long if he remains healthy. Despite a losing record Vegas has one of the better defensive cores in the league, and sooner or later this will translate into more wins.

October Recap

After one month the Golden Knights sit 26th in the league with 9 points and all 4 wins coming at home. It has been a rough start plagued with injuries for the Knights. Even with the return of some key players on defense, the Knights are still lacking up front. Leading scorer Bobby Ryan has been quiet in his last 2 outings with a minus-3 rating and 0 points. On a positive note Sami Vatanen has recorded points in every game except one since his return and sits with 5 points in 5 games.

Cody Eakin was injured versus the rangers last night. The duration of the injury has not been confirmed yet, so for now consider him day to day. However with a 3rd degree MCL sprain we can only assume he will miss some time.

The teams top 2 centers in Shipachyov and Plekanec have been held to 3 and 2 points each. Rumor has it that Shipachyov is being shopped around. Most recently as per Eklund, is that Shipachyov could be shipped to the Calgary Flames who currently sit 9th in the league. The details have not been leaked yet, but we assume high picks and prospects could be involved in the trade.

Trade Announcement

Finally after almost two weeks of discussions, the Golden Knights have pulled the trigger on a blockbuster deal sending Vladim Shipachyov and defensman Kevin Connauton to Calgary for Sam Bennett and prospect Oliver Kylington. This move liberates Vegas of over 5 million in cap space allowing them to sign Hudler or Iginla if needed. Both teams benefit from this deal, in that Vegas replaces an aging center with a top young gun and still gets a defensive prospect in the process. While Calgary benefits by adding 2 NHL ready players to their mix, which adds depth to their team. Vegas had to part ways with top prospect Erik Brannstrom who is currently playing in the SHL until 2020 and a 3rd round pick in 2020.

Both Shipachyov and Bennett are tied for points at 3 a piece. However Bennett has an excuse as he has been primarily playing on Calgary's 3rd line with minimal PP time, whereas Shipachyov has been playing first line minutes both at 5 on 5 and the powerplay.

We are excited to see how Bennett will pan out here in Vegas, where he will be given every opportunity to further advance his career as a number 1 center for the remainder of the season.

In other team news, Petr Mrazek suffered a cut on his face and his been sidelined for the last two games and is considered day to day. Cody Eakin has been re-assessed and is expected to miss approximately 2 months of action. While players such as Brandon Gaunce and Marion Gaborik have resumed skating and are expected back in the lineup soon.

November Recap

The struggles continue for the Golden Knights, as they currently sit tied with the Oilers at the bottom of the standings with 13 points and 6 wins. Although GM Dustin re-assured the fans that he was going to build a competitive team right away, its safe to say now that Vegas will certainly finish in the bottom 5 this season and will be competing for the first overall pick in the 2018 NHL entry draft.

When asked about his thoughts on the matter, Dustin was relatively quiet. "On the bright side, we have a good chance at Dahlin." We hope for him and the Knights that this would in fact be the outcome of what is turning out to be a disastrous season.

Marian Gaborik returned to the lineup for 5 games, scoring only 1 goal while seeing time in the top 6. However fans will have to wait longer to see if the aging winger can still produce for the team, as he has been sidelined again for 3-4 weeks with an elbow sprain after colliding into his own net trying to break up a 2 on 1.

Brandon Gaunce also made a return to action, suiting up for 1 game, recording 1 assist before being sent down to the minors where he has accumulated 2 points in 4 games.

Sam Bennett has only 2 points in 8 games for the Knights while playing on the top line. We expect this to change once he starts feeling more comfortable with his new team. Bennett has the skill set to record a multi point night on any night and is a volatile player against the opposition, and still has room to grow.

Not sure if anyone is actually following this at all, but seeing as my first season seems to be a solid tank, I'm only going to make my next update at the trade deadline, do some sort of team analysis and basic league news, after ill recap the draft/offseason and go from there!

Abysmal Season, Vegas eyes Dahlin

After finishing 2nd to last in the league this season, Vegas has their eyes on Dahlin. Only the Arizona coyotes finished with a worse record of 22-58-2 for 46 points on the season. They will be the ones giving Vegas a run for Dahlin. However Vegas has a plethora of picks and young talent available to move up in the draft, should they lose out on the lottery.

What was most shocking this season was that the GM Dustin traded only one of his aging players at the deadline. Many rumors had surfaced around players such as Gaborik, Plekanec and Gaunce being the youngest of the rumored players, however only Plekanec was moved. We understand Vegas already has several picks in this years draft, but a few more couldn't have hurt? The trade itself was:
C Tomas Plekanec to Toronto for C Dominic Moore + TOR 6th round pick in 2018

Another disappointment this season was the acquisition of Sam Bennett, many believed he was going to have an immediate impact on the team, but fell drastically short of making a difference with only 30 points. However Shipachyov himself only finished with 18 points on the season, 3 with Vegas and 15 more with Calgary. Still, the future is bright for Bennett and we expect him to be the top center in Vegas next season.

Bobby Ryan broke his thigh back on January 13th, and was held out for the remainder of the season. He still managed to lead the team in goals, and we can only assume he would have finished in the 25-30 goal range. With a contract like his, we only assume he is the candidate of trade bait and he could easily help out any team with cap space trying to add a pure goal scorer.

Here is a list of the top 16 scorers throughout the league:

OTHER NEWS
