The XML Suggestion Thread (June 15 XML File Version)

Hi folks,

New version of the thread. Before you submit more feedback on the in-game text or PbP commentary, please go here and make sure you are using the most recent XML file!

http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...d.php?t=124128

---

This thread is for suggestions, corrections, or constructive criticism related to in-game text in OOTPB. The XML file that contains play-by-play and in-game text for OOTPB is being updated and polished on an ongoing basis, based on feedback from the community.

A few rules for submitting feedback:

1. Be nice. If you can't post a suggestion without resorting to inflammatory phrasing like "This sucks" or "This sounds pathetic" then don't bother.

2. Please be as specific as possible about where you saw the text. For example, "This was in a player of the week news article for a starting pitcher" or "This was when my runner was advancing to third..." If possible, provide a screenshot. In the case of play-by-play, try to include the full play in question, not just the one erroneous line.

3. If possible, provide an alternative. Rephrase it, correct the spelling, etc.

4. Please try to stay away from feature suggestions in this thread. This thread is not intended to discuss ways that Markus could change how in-game text works. It's more to address incorrect or unnatural text items in the game.

5. Be nice.

6. If you really want to help debug text, try using some of the game's text debugging options.

We're very open to feedback, as long as it's constructive and polite.

Thanks very much!

As of tonight (my time), all of Tysok's concerns (see the previous thread) have been addressed, and the vast majority of them were incorporated into the new XML file that Steve has made available.

Please report here any other glitches you see, and we'll keep making the database even better.

In an effort to be more constructive, I am now running debug as Steve suggested

[189-5407]swung on...
[225-5533]it's belted...
[236-12213]to...

Is the last line supposed to contain a player name or field?

The result of the play was a home run, but the distance units are not being given...

[280-10311]that ball landed 380 from home plate.

also...

[280-10320] 353 on the tape measure... should read 353 feet...

Found another with pitch count:

[12-11339] it's one balls and two strikes on the batter...

Should read one ball.

I think this one may just be missing a (nl):

Greg Stead got him with a [314-8853] hummer knee high on the outside corner...

Never mind, I've seen this on other pitch calls where variation is called for.

Typo:

[384-14488] called third strike!
Spurr just watched it go by...(n) Espinoza rung him up...

Should be (nl)

News item announcing POW:

[33-462] ...He batted .435...

"Batted" is an awkward term, considering it's followed by:

...swatted 5 home runs...

"hit" would work better insted of "batted".

Also,

[92-1225] ...10 bases on balls...

While "base on balls" is a more than appropriate term in baseball, when listing stats "walks" is MUCH more common.

Thanks, this is a great help, as always. The debug mode really speeds up our ability to fix things.

The fielder waiving himself off remains...

[241-12291] Francois Lapierre gets upder it...
also on the move if Lapierre...
but he's waved off by Lapierre...

For the record, this folled the following text:

[233-12116] out towrd straight away center...

So, no one BUT the centerefielder had any business going after that one.

Edit: I have seen this type of play numerous times since, and it only seems to be a problem when the centerfielder is the primary player involved.

Got this call on a strikeout...

[347-10030] the umpire is maintaining a very wide strike-zone...

The strikout pitch was right down the middle, well inside the strike zone.

This may not be a text issue, but more of a coding problem...

[151-9372] back up the middle...past the pitcher's mound...
[199-14325] West could have a hard time with that one...
[216-13403] West dives...

The main problem here is...West is the third baseman and therefore should not be the one diving to try and get a grounder "back up the middle."

Another call where it seems to be the wrong player:

[233-12118] straight away to short center...
[239-14270] Ping is charging for it...
[217-13434] but he can't corral it...

Ping is the second baseman. While yes, he will go after a ball in center, he wouldn't be "charging" it, since that implies he's coming IN, and not going OUT.

This is redundant...

[179-8022]Thien gloves with the backhand...he steps on second for the force...
[206-9868]the tag on Ken Goodchild...out!

He either tage the base or tags the man, not both.

News item:

[92-1301] ...he has homered 1 times...

With only one HR, it shoud read "1 time".

Not sure if all of this is part of the text file, or if the offending portion is hard-coded:

[280-10325] 410 (unit of measure missing) as Tufts just watched it go...
Generoso Herrera belts a 2-run homer!
Generoso Herrera belts a 2-run homer!

The line is repeated (although this could be for effect now that I think about it...)

Of course, the next line WAS...

"they go deep back-to-back" - It's IMPOSSIBLE to hit a two-run shot as the second half of back-to-back jacks! There was a single in between the two homers.

Edit: The next batter went yard as well, and I got the double Homerun call with [280-10310]

Grounder to short ends up awkwardly...

[180-6648] a difficult play...Booth (the SS) darts over...he makes the play!
[220-13488]no chance to make anything of this play...he'll hang onto it...

The first line should probably read "he makes the stop..." Otherwise, he makes the play then he doesn't make the play!

A news item about a shutout that is questionably appropriate:

[93-1068] "Vachon is the type of young stud that makes scouts salivate."

Might be offensive to some. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

News item for relievers:

[94-5382] He has delivered x saves out of a possible y.

For one, this should read "out of a possible y opportunities."
For the other, not all relievers record saves, and this particular line should be reserved for closers in a perfect world. Ironically, this item came up for a starter...he must have been used as a reliever this season.

Batter of the month news item:

[40-1853]...after posting a .333 in May...

It should read "...after posting a .333 average in May..."

Guess I'm the only one working on this...oh well!

Something's missing here...

[189-11391] the batter swing from his heels...
[15-7722] scoring is Whiteway...

The situation? Runners of first and third, no outs. After the play, the run has scored, the bases are clear, and there are two outs. Oops, checking the log, it's the 1-6-3 DP bug.

When it rains it pours. Got a 2B throwing it to himself:

[176-7136] Callahan picks it...he takes it to the bag himself...
[206-9851] makes the catch to retire Je-ju Ping...
[162-11013] that's flashing the leather!

Strikeout call, missing possessive:

[348-14486] HE GONE!...

Requires a ['s]. Last time I checked, 50 Cent is not a PxP guy!
