RF Jerry Suazo (28-L) signed our contract offer today! We now have $276,200 left to spend! But we now have a total of one outfielder who will take a pitch every once in a while!

LF Michael Guerrero (31-L), formerly of Detroit, signed a 6 year contract with Chicago for $1.68 million per season. He hit .295 with 65 HR and 255 RBI and an .881 OPS over the past 2 seasons, but has not made the All-Star team. He finished 2nd in the MVP vote in 2001.

Time for the B Leagues Draft! The final B Leagues Draft of all time! The Major Leagues are taking over the B Leagues and the C Leagues and will draft from the D Leagues next January.

Just like last year, I come into the draft with 2 players I really want. Unlike last year, however, when we had the 5th pick and I thought I would land one of the two players but did not, I have no illusions of getting either this time around with the lucky 13th pick. But I am hoping we can maybe work out a trade for one or both after the Draft. The two players in question are P Mitch Bagley (21-R) and SS Darrell Grigg (20-L).

Well, Bagley went to San Antonio with the 2nd pick, but Grigg was still there when we picked, which made me suspicious, but I went ahead an took him!

Not near the haul of talent we got last year. Other than our 1st round pick, I don't think we got anyone who will make much of a difference. Hope I am wrong, though.

Time to get to work on the trade front!

Editor's Note:
I have decided to stick with my house rule enforcing 1 for 1 trades. So far, even though it has been frustrating not being able to get a lot of the players I wish I could and know I could without the restrictions, the rule has done its job of keeping me from trading my way to a quick title.

Trade #29
2B Shannon Kuchta (25-R) to Cincinnati for RP Vic Kyzer (24-L).

Kuchta's defense is not great and he never takes a walk. He does have plus power for a middle infielder, but that is not enough to overcome his weaknesses in my eyes. Plus he missed significant to injuries in each of the last two seasons.

Kyzer was taken in the 4th round of this year's B Leagues Draft. We need left-handed relief desperately and hopefully he will help with that.

Trade #30

1B/3B Rick Woodell (31-L) to Kansas City for RP Jon Weekley (27-R).

Woodell could not play D very well and complained when he was not in the lineup and then, when he was in the lineup, complained that he was not our cleanup hitter.

Weekley had an excellent year for the Royals last year.

Trade #31
SP Joe Hoehn (27-R) to Seattle for RP Victor Alvarez (29-L).

In A Ball, Joe Hoehn was 34-18 with a 2.52 ERA over the past 2 seasons. But for Portland, he went 1-5 with a 6.91 ERA. There was quite a bit of interest in him around the league, but I decided to go for a rarity: a quality left-handed reliever.

Editor's Note: I did a search for left-handed relievers rated 3 stars or better. There are only 4 in all of Baseball... And two of them are slackers. Alvarez is the highest rated at 4 stars.

Alvarez is a unique individual: not only is he a rare quality left-handed reliever, but he was the only Colombian in the Major Leagues until rookie SP Emilio de la Torre joined the Denver Bears this season. SP Carlos de Santiago was drafted in the first round of this year's B Leagues Draft by the Brooklyn Dodgers and may be the 3rd Colombian in the Big Leagues this season.

Trade #32

RP Garry Ayers (30-R) to Seattle for LF Carlos Lopez (27-L).

Ayers has been decent for us, but in our revamped Bullpen, he just will not do. He has walked 91 batters in 142.2 IP.

Lopez does not hit for much average and he strikes out a lot, but he will draw walks and hit some home runs and play sold defense in left. We needed a lefty bat on the bench for pinch-hitting duties, since we let Don Neumann go and traded away Rick Woodell, our two primary options last season.

Trade #33

RP David Fuentes (26-R) to Sacramento for SS Dave Maynard (20-R).

Fuentes had stretches where he was unhittable for weeks. And then he'd give up 10 hits in a row....

Editor's Note: This is the first trade made purely on the recommendation of our Scouting Director, as Maynard has no stats accumulated anywhere for me to peruse. He was acquired by the Solons in the Major League takeover of the B Leagues. We did not get any 4 start prospects in our haul.

By the way, In the Major League takeover of the B and C Leagues, our new affiliates will be the Hartford Whalers (B) and the Evansville Triplets (C).

Trade #34

RP Jeff Gleason (25-R) to Baltimore for 3B A.J. Lee (23-R).

Gleason was just like Fuentes, except without the unhittable streaks....

Lee will take over the job vacated by Rich Cruz: backup infield and late inning defensive replacement for Fernando Mexicano at 3rd base. If he develops like SD Oscar Cervantes thinks he will, then he will be very useful indeed.

Trade #35
Minor Deal
2B Steve Stone (19-R) to Boston for C Stan DiPrima (22-L)

Stone was part of our haul when we acquired Hartford (B) and Evansville (C). He is one of the youngest players we have and that usually marks someone as a player to watch. But SD Oscar Cervantes says he will never walk much.

DiPrima is nothing special, except he is a non-stationary catcher who has a little skill and is not a slacker, which is a rarity. You will probably never hear of him again.

Trade #36
RF Paul Moreland (21-L) to Sacramento for C Tim Higbee (20-S).

Moreland hit .311 with 50 doubles for Vancouver (A), but drew 26 unintentional walks and SD Oscar Cervantes says he never will learn to be patient at the plate. He was the #3 prospect in Baseball this past April

Higbee was the 5th overall pick in this year's B Leagues draft. He hit 26 HR at the age of 19 which is very impressive. Fernando Mexicano hit 27, but was a year older. The only knock on him his his defense leavers a lot to be desired. But catchers who can hit and are not immobile are hard to find. I wish I would have traded for Joe Taylor last year when I had the chance. The Denver Bears would have taken Kim Springer for him then, but won't even take Fernando Mexicano now.... Higbee is as slow as molasses, but he can outrun my pet 3-legged box turtle by a whisker.....

Trade #37

3B Roger Cullifer (26-R) to Houston for SP John Krawczyk (23-L).

Cullifer was an All-Star for Vancouver (A) this year, hitting 16 HR, stealing 42 bases and drawing 63 walks. Unfortunately, he only hit .229. He plays solid defense.

Krawczyk was drafted in the 3rd round of this year's B League draft and looks to have some potential, though he will give up a home run or two. At the least, he should develop enough to be a decent left-handed option in the Pen.

Trade #38
LF Fernando Martinez (28-L) to New York for RP Denny Jennissen (29-R)

It amazed me how little interest there was in acquiring a player who hit .281 with 35 HR and 102 RBI and has won back to back Gold Gloves. I was hoping to get a decent starting pitcher for him, but everyone just laughed in my face.... I could not even get an elite reliever... Oh, well, I guess I cannot blame them, since I don't want him either.... That's a million dollars off the books now, at least...

Trade #39
Extremely minor deal
RF Jerry Gibbs (21-R) to Miami for C Victor Barron (25-S).

Gibbs is a 2.5 star prospect who is a slacker and cannot play D.

Barron is too old to be a prospect....

SP Billy Fritts (28-L), formerly of New York, signed a 5 year contract for $11 million with Boston. He was 20-6 with a 2.33 ERA in 2001, but dropped off to 12-11 with a 3.39 ERA in 2002. He also missed the World Series with a partially torn labrum.

He's the last good starting pitcher to sign. There are a few hitters left hoping to make over a million. We will not be dipping into the market anymore.

I think we are done trading for this year, too. I have gotten rid of everyone I wanted to. At least, everyone who would bring back something of value....

1B Burt McTyre (29-R), formerly of St. Louis, signed 6 year contract for $1.29 million per season with Cleveland. He was an All-Star and won a Gold Glove last season, batting .290 with 15 HR and 66 RBI with 104 R and 54 SB.

We began our schedule of 30 Spring Training games with a 1 to 0 loss to the San Diego Padres at our Training Complex in Glendale, Arizona. Only 7 hits total by both teams. Rookie relief pitcher Greg Wills (22-R) hurt his ankle, but Trudy the Trainer says it is nothing serious. Cross your fingers for no dreadful harm comes to any of our players.

We signed 1B Oscar Trejo (30-R), formerly of Los Angeles, to a 1 year contract for $200,000. Over the last two years he has hit .263 with 20 HR in 482 AB. We did not have much of a backup plan if Glenn Snowden got hurt and we were a little light on pinch-hitter types.

The Padres lost CF Dave Bafaro (28-L) for the season with a torn ACL. He won the Batting Title (.358) and a Gold Glove in 2001 and led the PCL in steals last season (64).

We finished our Spring Training schedule with a 3 to 2 win at the Angels Training Complex. We ended up 15-15, our best Spring record ever! The only major injury we had was that P Roger Lerer (29-L) broke his elbow and is out until August. But he is always breaking something and will not be missed.

The Padres had the best record in our division, even without CF Dave Bafaro, at a pedestrian 17-13. Hollywood was last at 12-18. The Kansas City Royals had the best record in Baseball at 22-8. LF Ken Manning (24-R) led all players with 8 HR. The worst record belonged to the Houston Astros at 10-20.

Next Up: Meet the Beavers!

Starting Rotation

Bobby Johnson
23 year old (24 on April 20) right-hander from St. Petersburg, Florida. 6' 2" 198 lbs. (+7) $52,500. Arbitration eligible after this season. Acquired in a trade with Seattle in January, 2001. He was the 12th overall pick in that year's B Leagues Draft. 94 MPH over-the-top fastball with a curve, changeup, splitter and circle change. The changeup is his best pitch, but all are very good, except the circle change, which is a work in progress. Not a good move to first. Decent bunter. Likable young man. Was 1-0 with and did not allow a run in 18 IP with only 8 H and 5 BB with 10 SO.
2002 (MLB): 13-12 3.22 ERA 36 GS 254.1 IP 252 H 22 HR 61 BB 131 BB 2.2/4.6 BB/SO per 9 for Portland

Steve Muir
28 year old right-hander from Ooltewah, Tennessee (a suburb of Chattanooga). 6' 3" 204 lbs. (+4) $1,062,500. Arbitration. An original Beaver. 90 MPH fastball with a good curve and slider. He has a tendency to get more fly balls than grounders. Average bunter. Solid move to first. Won the Gold Glove in 2001. Was 1-0 with an 0.90 ERA this Spring.

Frank Flores
23 year old (24 on April 26) right-hander from Caracas, Venezuela. 6' 1" 179 lbs. (+2) $50,000. Minimum. Selected in the 2nd round of the 2002 B Leagues Draft. 93 MPH over-the-top fastball with a very good curve and solid changeup. Decent move to first and an average fielder. Below average bunter. A hard worker and a leader in the clubhouse. Was 1-0 with a 6.40 ERA this Spring, pitching mostly well, but a few bad pitches ended up the seats.
2002 (MLB): 13-12 3.39 ERA 33 GS 225.1 IP 199 H 17 HR 64 BB 107 SO 2.6/4.3 BB/SO per 9 as a rookie for Portland

Rondey Moe
27 year old right-hander from Round Rock, Texas. 6' 4" 204 lbs. $150,000. Arbitration. Acquired in a trade with Pittsburgh in May, 2002. 91 MPH fastball with with a nasty curve and an excellent changeup. He pitches up in the zone and gets a lot of fly balls. About as good at holding runners close to first as a right-hander can be, but a poor fielder. Average bunter and a decent hitter for a pitcher (.209 career BA). Was 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA this Spring only walking 2.4 per 0 IP with 9.5 S)/9. Control, or lack thereof, has been his biggest weakness.
2002 (MLB): 6-8 2.86 ERA 24 G 23 GS 154 IP 111 H 13 HR 65 BB 105 SO 3.8/6.1 BB/SO per 9 for Portland

Drafted in the 2nd round of this year's B Leagues Draft. 92 MPH fastball with and excellent changeup, a good slider and forkball and a decent sinker. He gets a lot of ground balls. We cannot get him to pay attention to runners on base.... He is a decent fielder and hit .273 in his career in the B Leagues. Was 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA this Spring. In 20 IP, he allowed 18 H, 1 HR, 11 BB and 15 SO.

32 year old catcher who bats and throws right-handed from Houston, Texas. 6' 0" 211 lbs. (+5) $660,000. Arbitration. Acquired in a trade with Cincinnati in May, 2001. Decent receiver with an average arm. Average runner who likes to steal bases if given a chance. Very hard worker and a spark plug in the clubhouse. Plays the game all out. He cost us a bunch of money with the good year he had last year. I hope he can keep it up, but he never hit before in his life... We can't afford to keep the old Shippy on the new salary... Hit .218 with 1 HR and a .592 OPS this Spring.
2002 (MLB): .274/.334/.409 in 430 AB with 9 HR and 56 RBI and 9 SB for Portland
MLB (2 yrs): .265/.325/.377 in 584 AB with 10 HR and 75 RBI and 9 SB for Cincinnati (.22) and Portland (1.78).

Rick Mansoor
29 year old catcher who bats and throws right-handed from Ridge Wood Heights, Florida (a suburb of Sarasota). 6' 0" 213 lbs. $50,000. Minimum. Acquired in a trade with Houston in January, 2002. Excellent receiver with a below average arm. No speed at all, but will steal a base if the battery is napping. Was maybe even a bigger surprise than Jim Shippy with his hitting. Hit .292 for us after hitting .234 in A Ball the year before. Hit .250 with 0 HR and a .650 OPS this Spring.
2002 (MLB): .292/.343/.425 in 120 AB with 3 HR and 14 RBI and 1 SB for Portland

Infielders
Glenn Snowden
26 year old first baseman who bats and throws right-handed from Prestonsburg, Kentucky (a very small coal mining town in the mountains of southeastern Kentucky). 6' 3" 212 lbs. (+5) $1,300,000. Signed through 2012! An Original Beaver. Won the Gold Glove at first base in 2001 and a Silver Bat in 2002. A 2-time All-Star. Did not win a Gold Glove in 2002 when his errors skyrocketed from 9 to 20. A below average runner. A very hard worker and a fan favorite. Hit .286 with 3 HR and an .947 OPS this Spring.
2002 (MLB): .308/.386/.551 in 595 AB with 38 HR and 113 RBI and 0 SB for Portland
MLB (2 yrs): .312/.390/.555 in 1174 AB with 73 HR and 226 RBI and 0 SB for Portland

Oscar Trejo
30 year old first baseman who bats and throws right-handed from San Mateo, Venezuela. 6' 2" 218 lbs. $200,000. Arbitration. Signed as a free agent this March. Decent fielder with limited range. No speed. Hard worker and a leader in the clubhouse. Was the PCL Championship Series MVP in 2001. Hit .323 with 2 HR and an .861 OPS this Spring.
2002 (MLB): .265/.346/.469 in 113 AB with 6 HR and 19 RBI and 0 SB for Los Angeles
MLB (2 yrs): .263/.340/.432 in 482 AB with 20 HR and 74 RBI and 0 SB for Los Angeles

Juan Rojas
24 year old second baseman who bats from both sides of the plate and throws right-handed from Torreon, Mexico. 6' 0" 176 lbs. $50,000. Minimum. Drafted in the 3rd round of the 2001 B Leagues Draft. Excellent range and a very quick release. Decent hands and arm. Can play anywhere in the infield and some outfield, too. Average runner, but not a very good base stealer and not very smart on the base paths. A crossword puzzler. Hit .137 with an .424 OPS this Spring. I hope he hits, because we do not have a lit of other options...
2002 (MLB): .239/.298/.298 in 372 AB with 1 HR and 28 RBI and 0 SB for Portland
2002 (A): .242/.329/.305 in 128 AB with 2 HR and 16 RBI and 0 SB for Vancouver
MLB (2 yrs): .222/.282/.275 in 477 AB with 1 HR and 32 RBI and 0 SB for Portland

Fernando Mexicano
22 year old third baseman who bats left-handed and throws right-handed from Culebra, Puerto Rico. 6' 1" 178 lbs. (0) $52,500. Arbitration. Selected in the first round (2nd overall pick) of the 2001 B Leagues Draft. Won a Silver Bat in 2002. An average (or below) fielding third baseman with a solid arm. Can play First and anywhere in the outfield. He is probably best suited defensively as a corner outfielder, but having a 3rd baseman with his bat is too much temptation to resist. Slow runner and not aggressive on the bases, but will surprise with a steal every once in a while. Like Juan Rojas, he likes to do crossword puzzles in the clubhouse. Hit .295 with 3 HR and an .949 OPS this Spring.
2002 (MLB): .295/.376/.545 in 589 AB with 38 HR and 118 RBI and 2 SB for Portland
MLB (2 yrs): .296/.367/.553 in 1067 AB with 68 HR and 191 RBI and 2 SB for Portland

A.J. Lee
23 year old third baseman who bats and throws right-handed from Fremont, California (on San Francisco Bay). 6' 0" 185 lbs. $50,000. Minimum. Acquired in a trade with Baltimore this January. An excellent fielder who can play anywhere on the diamond, except catcher. Good base runner with the above average speed and will steal a base. Excellent bunter. Hit .152 with 0 HR and a .351 OPS this Spring.
2002 (MLB): .253/.303/.320 in 372 AB with 2 HR and 35 RBI and 5 SB as a rookie for Baltimore

Dave Risinger
27 year old shortstop who bats and throws right-handed from Hayesville, Oregon (a suburb of Salem, just 45 miles south of Portland on the I-5). 6' 2" 194 lbs. (+1) $280,800. Arbitration. An original Beaver. Decent range, but a very strong arm with a super quick release and very good hands. Can play anywhere but catcher. Very fast and a good base stealer and very aggressive base runner. Hit .180 with 1 HR and a .563 OPS this Spring.
2002 (MLB): .278/.322/.366 in 413 AB with 7 HR and 46 RBI and 20 SB for Portland
2002 (A): .173/.200/.250 in 52 AB with 0 HR and 2 RBI and 3 SB for Vancouver
MLB (2 yrs): .263/.315/.348 in 799 AB with 10 HR and 80 RBI and 42 SB for Portland

Outfielders
Kim Springer
22 year old left fielder who bats and throws left-handed from North Westport, Massachusetts (12 miles southwest of Fall River). 6' 5" 197 lbs. (+1) $50,000. Minimum. We used up his rookie status last season by a handful of AB. Selected in the 1st round (5th overall) in the 2002 B Leagues Draft. Adequate fielder and runner, but will steal a base and is a heads up base runner. Does not have the arm to play right and his range is only average at 22 years old, which means it will not be very good at all when he is 30. I tried to trade him this winter, but no one would give me good value for him. We'll try again next winter. He is easy to get along with. Hit .236 with 0 HR and a .621 OPS this Spring.
2002 (MLB): .257/.301/.375 in 136 AB with 3 HR and 13 RBI and 3 SB as a rookie for Portland
2002 (A): .300/.357/.433 in 416 AB with 7 HR and 49 RBI and 8 SB for Vancouver

Carlos Lopez
28 year old left fielder who bats and throws left-handed from Oxford, Ohio (home of Miami University). 6' 2" 208 lbs. $120,000. Arbitration. Acquired in a trade with Seattle this January. Average fielder with sire hands. Can play right in a pinch, but his arm is only average. Fast runner, but not very good at stealing bases. Hard worker and a hard-nosed player, but not dirty. An enthusiastic teammate. Hit .235 with 2 HR and a .798 OPS this Spring.
2002 (MLB): .243/.312/.432 in 205 AB with 8 HR and 28 RBI and 4 SB for Seattle
MLB (2 yrs): .221/.297/.359 in 298 AB with 9 HR and 36 RBI and 5 SB for Seattle

Brian Mitchell
21 year old (22 on April 9) center fielder who bats and throws left-handed from Detroit, Michigan. 5' 10" 172 lbs. (+3) $50,000. Minimum. Selected in the 4th round of the 2001 B Leagues draft. Good range and a superior arm. Very hard worker. Very fast and will steal bases. Good bunter. Hit .220 with 0 HR and a .538 OPS this Spring. Will start versus right-handers.
2002 (MLB): .307/.351/.367 in 381 AB with 0 HR and 16 RBI and 17 SB as a rookie for Portland
2002 (A): .194/.256/.278 in 36 AB with 1 HR and 3 RBI and 2 SB for Vancouver in a rehab assignment
MLB (2 yrs): .296/.341/.350 in 432 AB with 0 HR and 18 RBI and 19 SB for Portland

Jack Hinckley
27 year old center fielder who bats right-handed and throws left-handed from White Lake Township, Michigan (a suburb of Detroit). 6' 4" 203 lbs. (0) $200,000. Arbitration. An original Beaver. Good range and a very good arm and sure hands. Very hard worker. Very fast and will steal a base. A good bunter. Hit .267 with 0 HR and a .749 OPS this Spring. Will start versus left-handers.
2002 (MLB): .292/.342/.363 in 424 AB with 2 HR and 34 RBI and 22 SB for Portland
MLB (2 yrs): .269/.327/.345 in 940 AB with 4 HR and 73 RBI and 48 SB for Portland

Larry Ballard
24 year old center fielder who bats left-handed and throws right-handed from Wellington, Florida (just west of West Palm Beach). 5' 9" 150 lbs. (+6) The weight is all muscle! $50,000. Minimum. Signed as a minor league free agent in February, 2002. Selected in the 4th round of the 2002 B Leagues Draft by Detroit, but released. Good range and a decent arm and very sure hands. Can also play 2nd base, but is not so good there. He has good range there, but is prone to errors and not so good on the pivot. Extremely fast and a smart base runner. Very hard worker and a humble gentleman. He is a weightlifter and very strong for his slight build.
2002 (MLB): .236/.311/.354 in 161 AB with 2 HR and 13 RBI and 12 SB as a rookie for Portland
2002 (A): .301/.349/.485 in 196 AB with 6 HR and 25 RBI and 6 SB for Vancouver

Jerry Suazo
28 year old outfielder who bats and throws left-handed from Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic. 6' 1" 193 lbs. $575,000. Signed through 2005. Signed as a free agent this past December. Good range and a decent arm and very sure hands. Arm is not quite what I'd like in a right fielder, but he seems more comfortable in right than in center, though he has the range to play in the middle. An average runner, but will not steal a base. Good bunter. Very hard worker. Hit .286 with 0 HR and a .743 OPS this Spring.
2002 (MLB): .295/.376/.355 in 563 AB with 2 HR and 54 RBI and 0 SB for Hollywood
MLB (2 yrs): .299/.379/.374 in 1162 AB with 9 HR and 117 RBI and 0 SB for Hollywood

Disabled List

Roger Lerer
29 year old left-hander from New Milford, Connecticut (near the border with New York). 6' 0" 186 lbs. (+5) $50,000. Arbitration. An Original Beaver. 92 MPH sidearm fastball with a good slider and splitter and a crappy changeup. A very good bunter. Has a good move to first, but not as good as most lefties and is a below average fielder. He is a prankster. Was 1-0 with a 4.32 ERA this Spring. 8.1 IP, 8 H, 0 HR, 5 BB, 4 SO. He broke his elbow and will be out until August. It's always something with him, but he is not costing us much money to keep around, so why not?
2002 (MLB): 0-1 3.15 ERA 25 G 1 GS 20 IP 21 H 1 HR 9 BB 17 SO 4.0/7.7 BB/SO per 9 for Portland.
2002 (A): 4-0 2.74 ERA 7 GS 42.2 IP 40 H 2 HR 18 BB 29 SO 3.8/6.1 BB/SO per 9 for Vancouver
MLB (2 yrs): 0-3 5.44 ERA 33 G 9 GS 46.1 IP 57 H 5 HR 21 BB 36 SO 4.1/7.0 BB/SO per 9 for Portland

Prospects ranked by Baseball America in the top 200:
C Tim Higbee (#26)
20 year old catcher who bats from both sides of the plate and throws right-handed from Shreveport, Louisiana. 6' 2" 191 lbs. Rookie. Acquired in a trade with Sacramento this January. He was drafted in the 1st round (5th overall) of this year's B Leagues Draft. Not a bad receiver as some have claimed, but he does have a below average arm. He's a very hard worker and a natural born leader. A slow runner. Won a Bronze Bat and was an All-Star in the B leagues last year. He is projected to be a big time hitter. He hit .317 with 1 HR and a .749 OPS this Spring. My expectation is that Jim Shippy will not be able to match his production from last season and Higbee will be our starting catcher by the All-Star break. In the meantime, he will get some seasoning at Vancouver (A).
2002 (B): .270/.305/.488 in 518 AB with 26 HR and 73 RBI and 0 SB for Chattanooga

SS Dave Maynard (#52)
20 year old shortstop who throws and bats right-handed from San Diego, California. 6' 2" 192 lbs. Rookie. Acquired in a trade with Sacramento this January. He has superior range, but only a decent arm. Sure hands. He is a fast runner and will steal bases. Was not invited to Spring Training. Last year he played in the low minors. He will begin the season at Evansville (C).

3B Brent Edwards (#56)
21 year old 3rd baseman who bats and throws right-handed from Steilacoom, Washington (a suburb of Tacoma). 6' 3" 183 lbs. Rookie. Drafted in the 3rd round of this year's B Leagues Draft. Has the range to play short, but is awkward around the bag on double plays. Very fast runner and likes to steal bases, but could be better at reading pitchers. A good bunter. Keeps to himself. Was not invited to Spring Training. He wil start the season at Hartford (B).
2002 (B): .269/.301/.371 in 572 AB with 3 HR and 60 RBI and 22 SB for Birmingham

SS Jose Atoige (#103)
21 year old shortstop who bats and throws right-handed from Puerto Plata, the Dominican Republic. 6' 2" 179 lbs. Rookie. Acquired in the Major League takeover of the B and C Leagues. He has good range and a very strong arm. May end up at 3rd base. Very fast runner and a hard worker. Was not invited to Spring training. He will begin the season at Hartford (B).
2002 (B): .219/.270/.264 in 462 AB with 0 HR and 31 RBI and 15 SB for Jacksonville

SP John Krawczyk (#153)
23 year old left-hander from Columbia, Maryland (15 miles southwest of Baltimore). 6' 4" 207 lbs. Rookie. Acquired in a trade with Houston this January. He was selected in the 3rd round of this year's B Leagues Draft. 94 MPH fastball with a good curve, a mediocre sinker and a crappy changeup. Not a good move to first for a left-hander and not a good fielder or bunter. Was a B League All-Star last year. He led the Midwest League in wins. He was 1-2 with a 4.05 ERA this Spring. 20 IP, 21 H, 5 HR, 6 BB, 12 SO. 5 HR is a lot... He will begin the season in Vancouver (A).
2002 (B): 16-10 2.58 ERA 35 GS 254.1 IP 211 H 10 HR 79 BB 198 SO 2.8/7.0 BB/SO per 9 for Fort Wayne

20 year old center fielder who bats and throws left-handed from Chester, South Carolina (a very small town 40 miles southwest of Charlotte, North Carolina). 6' 2" 175 lbs. Rookie. Acquired in the Major League takeover of the B and C Leagues. Excellent range and a very strong arm. Very fast. Was not invited to Spring Training. He will begin the season at Evansville (C).
2002 (B): .217/.242/.267 in 60 AB with 0 HR and 2 RBI and 2 SB for Jacksonville

RP Seung-ook Koo (#186)
25 year old left-hander from Yongin, South Korea. 6' 2" 196 lbs. Rookie. Acquired in the Major League takeover of the B and C Leagues. 90 MPH fastball with a devastating changeup and poor curve. Gets a lot of ground balls. Good move to 1st, but only average for a left-hander. Below average fielder. A good bunter and a hard worker. Was not invited to Spring Training. He pitched in the low minors last year. I do not know how great a prospect you can be when you have not reached B Ball yet and you are 25.... He will begin the season at Evansville (C).

Before we get to Opening Day, let me introduce the new lineup of ballparks. We have used every park that was in service in 1969-1992 for more than just a season or two. The factors are based on an average of what the park displayed during those years. This time, instead of normalizing the parks by league, I normalized them by division, so that all the park factors in a division average out to 1.

Giant Stadium is a clone of Yankee Stadium. Its factors are only based on what it displayed after the renovation of the mid-1970's.

Gilmore Stadium is a clone of Dodger Stadium.

The only two teams that play in parks not used in 1969-1992 are Miami and Denver. Miami's Joe Robbie Stadium is based on 1993-2000 and Denver's Coors Field is based on 2002-20011 with the left and right hit factors toned down a bit from real life.

The Beavers park is Metropolitan Stadium which was the home of the Twins before they moved into the Metrodome. It is quite hitter friendly.

Opening Day
!

We open the season with 2 games at home versus Los Angeles, the same as we did last season. We do not have the same schedule as last year after these first two games. In 2001, we opened the season in Los Angeles. I think our fans would like to see a different opponent on Opening Day for next year, please. Unlike last year, though, the Angels are not the defending champions of the division. They finished with a losing record, but beat us out of the 4th place spot at the end of the season. We were 6-8 against them last year and 4-10 in 2001. They were 13th in the PCL in scoring last season with 605 runs (3.73/G). We ended up 6th with 692 runs (4.27/G). We were 2nd in home runs with 149. San Francisco hit 153. The Angels were 12th with 107. They were 5th in fewest runs allowed with 633 (3.91/G). We were 7th with 654 (4.04/G). We were last in the League in Saves with 32. They had 43, tied for 4th best. The Angels lost their top two starting pitchers to free agency (Sam Henderson and John Guss), but they have Bud Fields (27-R) back from injury and they signed free agent Bill Wertz (32-R). Fields was 12-5 with a 2.42 ERA in 2001, but did not pitch at all last year. Wertz went 40-17 with a 2.46 ERA over the last two seasons with Salt Lake City. The Angels made him the highest paid pitcher in Baseball with his $2.64 million salary this season. Their lineup is basically unchanged from last season.

Los Angeles Angels (80-82 .494 26 GB in 4th place in the PCL West last year) at
Portland Beavers (79-83 .488 27 GB in 5th place in the PCL West last year)

LA: Bud Fields (27-R DNP last year) All-Star(01) vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (23-R 13-12 3.22 last year)

Fields was out all last season with an injury. We faced him once in 2001 and he pitched a 4 hit shutout with no walks and 8 SO.

Irv Hill grounds into a 6-4-3 double play! Charlie Allen hits a no doubt home run to right... 4 to 2, Angels. I think I am not going to like Jennissen much....

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Hal Ockey (27-R), their 2-time All-Star closer. Kim Springer swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to left. Dave Risinger grounds into a 4-6-3 double play....

Lost - 4 to 2

We had 7 hits and made no errors
Los Angeles had 8 hits and made 1 error

Bobby Johnson (L 0-1) went 5 innings, allowed 3 runs, 6 hits, 4 walks and struck out 5. 101 pitches.
RHP Denny Jennissen, in his Beaver debut, went 2 innings, allowed 1 run, 2 hits, 1 home run and struck out 2.
LHP Vic Kyzer, in his Major League debut, pitched 1 perfect inning and struck out 2.
RHP Jon Weekley, in his Beaver debut, pitched a perfect inning.

Bud Fields (W 1-0) went 6.1 innings, gave us 2 runs (1 earned), 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 8. 109 pitches. His first win since 2001.
RHP Hal Ockey (SV 1) pitched a scoreless 9th and gave us 1 hit.

RF Jerry Suazo, in his Beaver debut, went 1 for 4. CF Brian Mitchell had a hit and a walk, stole a base and scored both of our runs. 3B Fernando Mexicano hits a double. PH Carlos Lops, officially made his Beaver debut, but did not bat because they switched to a left-handed pitcher after we sent him up and we pulled him down. PH Oscar Trejo, in his Beaver debut, had a hit.

Around the League:
3B Rick Woodell (31-L) hit a home run in his debut with the Royals yesterday.

Editor's Note:
One other change I have made for this season is that I have upped the All-Star rosters to 32 players from 25. In the 1970's, the NL had 12 teams supplying 25 roster spots and they upped it to 30 in 1982. So 32 players from 16 teams still leaves us with a slightly less All-Star to team ratio than the 1970s.

We are in Milwaukee to play the Brewers a 4 game series through the weekend. They split a pair of games here with San Antonio to open the season. We were 2-6 against them last year and 4-4 in 2001. They won 82 games last year and finished in 4th place in the PCL East. They were 2nd in the PCL in scoring last season with 758 runs (4.68/G). They were dead last in fewest runs allowed with 767 (4.73/G), 1 run more than the Denver Bears. Their pitchers allowed 161 HR last year, by far the most in the League. Salt Lake City allowed the 2nd most with 133. They are in a new park this season, however, that favors pitchers.

Portland Beavers (1-1 .500 tied for 1st (and last) place in the PCL West) at
Milwaukee Brewers (1-1 .500 1 GB tied for 3rd place in the PCL East)

Every team in the PCL West is 1-1!

POR: Frank Flores (23-R 13-12 3.39 last year) vs. MIL: Tim Willcox (31-R 18-9 3.52 last year)

Willcox was acquired from Dallas in a trade this January for RF Kennie Masline (28-L). He allowed 25 HR last year and 29 the year before. We were 1-1 against him last year with Dallas, but he pitched decently in both games.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
PORTLAND
1: RF Jerry Suazo (28-L .125-8-0-0-.250) 6 for 11 (.545) with 2 HR vs Willcox
2: CF Brian Mitchell (22-L .167-6-0-0-.452)
3: 3B Fernando Mexicano (22-L .250-8-0-0-.750) Silver Slugger
4: 1B Glenn Snowden (26-R .286-7-0-1-.571) Silver Slugger/2-time All-Star(MVP)/Gold Glove(01)
5: C Jim Shippy (32-R .000-7-0-0-.000)
6: LF Kim Springer (22-L .286-7-0-0-.571)
7: SS Dave Risinger (27-R .000-7-0-0-.000)
8: 2B Juan Rojas (24-S .286-7-0-1-.571)
9: P Frank Flores (23-R Season debut)

MILWAUKEE
1: 3B Antonio Flores (27-L .250-8-0-2-.500)
2: LF Dong-hak Shong (24-L .571-7-0-0-1.339)
3: 2B Gregg Hobbs (29-R .400-5-0-0-1.025) Silver Slugger(01)/All-Star(01)
4: C Larry McNeil (27-R .500-4-0-0-1.000)
5: 1B Steve Quakenbush (22-L .000-6-0-1-.125) Rookie #19 prospect
6: SS Fernando Medina (31-S .000-8-0-0-.000) 2-time Silver Slugger/2-time All-Star FA from Toronto
7: RF Bob Wick (30-R .000-6-0-0-.000)
8: CF Miguel Aguilar (33-L .143-7-0-0-.536) FA from Salt Lake City
9: P Tim Willcox (31-R Season debut) Trade from Dallas

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Milwaukee County Stadium
Weather: 48 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 13 MPH wind blowing in from center
Attendance: 17,423

Top of the First:
Jerry Suazo grounds out to short. He got a hit in his first AB as a Beaver and is 0 for 8 since... Brian Mitchell grounds out to 2nd. Fernando Mexicano grounds out to 1st, unassisted...

Bottom of the First:
Antonio Flores swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds a hit to left... Dong-hak Shong swings at a 3-2 pitch and hits a home run to left... 2 to 0, Brewers. Greg Hobbs grounds out to short. Larry McNeil grounds a hit to center. Steve Quakenbush swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds a hit to center and McNeil beats the throw to 3rd. A wild pitch scores McNeil... 3 to 0, Brewers. The Bullpen is up. I revamped the Bullpen this winter, thinking we had a pretty good starting rotation.... Fernando Medina lines out hard to right. 2 outs. Bob Wick lines out hard to left...

Top of the Third:

Dave Risinger is the first player to not make an out for us with a triple to right center! Of course, scoring him from there will be problematic.... Juan Rojas strikes out... With the infield in, P Frank Flores grounds one to 1st, but rookie Steve Quakenbush boots it and Risinger scores! 3 to 1, Brewers. Jerry Suazo grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and P Flores goes to 2nd. 2 outs. Brian Mitchell lines a hit to center and P Flores scores! 3 to 2, Brewers.

Bottom of the Fifth:

Antonio Flores leads off with a triple to right center... The Bullpen is up again. Dong-hak Shong beats out an infield hit and Flores scores. 4 to 2, Brewers. Gregg Hobbs grounds into a 4-6-3 double play!

Top of the Sixth:

Jerry Suazo grounds a hit to right. Brian Mitchell lays down a bunt and beats it out for a hit! Fernando Mexicano grounds a hit to center and the bases are loaded with no outs. Glenn Snowden beats out an infield hit and Suazo scores! 4 to 3, Brewers. Jim Shippy, still looking for his first hit of 2003, finds it with a grounder to right that scores 2!! 5 to 4, Beavers! That does it for P Tim Willcox. New Pitcher: Rick Webber (21-R), a rookie making his Major League debut. #36 prospect. Kim Springer strikes out... Dave Risinger swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 3rd and the runners advance. 2 outs. They walk Juan Rojas intentionally, which is not too smart, because they have to know I will pinch-hit for P Frank Flores. PH Carlos Lopez (28-L) to get his 1st PA as a Beaver. He swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses....

Bottom of the Ninth:
On the Hill: Roy Huls (22-R), after getting 2 outs in the 8th. With 2 outs, PH Bob Goemaat (22-L), a rookie who is 1 for 1 on the season, takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Miguel Aguilar grounds out to 2nd and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!

Won - 5 to 4

We had 8 hits and made 1 error
Milwaukee had 7 hits and made 1 error

Frank Flores (W 1-0) went 5 innings, allowed 4 runs, 7 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 3. He threw a WP. At bat, he did not have a hit or a walk, but scored a run and and an RBI.
LHP Victor Alvarez (H 1), in his Beaver debut, went 2.1 perfect innings with 1 strikeout.
RHP Roy Huls (SV 2) went 1.2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 walk and struck out 1.

Tim Willcox (L 0-1) went 5+ innings, gave us 5 runs (3 earned), 7 hits, no walks, 1 HBP and struck out 5.

Our batters have struck out 26 times in the first 3 games, tied for the 2nd most in Baseball. Denver has 28. The League average is 5.3 per game.

RF/LF Jerry Suazo had 2 hits and scored a run. CF Brian Mitchell had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. 1B Glenn Snowden had a hit and a walk (INT) and an RBI. And his 1st error. C Jim Shippy had his 1st hit of the year and bagged 2 RBI with it. SS Dave Risinger hit a triple and scored a run. 2B Juan Rojas was hit by a pitch and walked intentionally.

For Milwaukee, LF Dong-hak Shong ha 2 hits with a home run and 3 RBI.

Around the League: Nobody wanted LF Fernando Martinez much when we tried trade him this past winter and we had to settle for a decent relief pitcher from the Giants. I figured it was his $1.4 million salary that was scaring everyone off, but New York has already signed him to a 4 year extension for $7.8 million....

Down on the Farm: Rookie Don Marshall (23-L), our 4th round draft pick this year, pitched a 4 hit shutout at Tucson in his debut for Vancouver (A). He walked 3 and struck out 7. 134 pitches. At bat, he had a hit.The Mounties won, 4 to 0. Rookie C Tim Higbee (20-S) had 3 hits with 2 doubles and an RBI.
