An image of Gordie with Tulsa in 1956 appears elsewhere on this site. The images below include one with the White Sox from Whitesoxcards.net, one showing the first baseman with the 1956 Memphis Chicks (from Flickr), and a small shot of Gordie in his front office job with the Cubs in the 80s (from the Chicago Baseball Museum web site). For whatever reason, the Cubs pushed Gordie out in 1988 and then dismantled the superb minor league organization he'd built for them. He finished out his career with the Orioles. The Pilots hired Gordie in mid-to-late December 1969, so I'm not sure how much scouting he actually did for them, as opposed to scouting for the Brewers. Gordie passed away in 1996. |

Looks to be from his days [1952-1953] at Great Falls. From the "family collection" of his nephew, Ted Marmo…you might want to try contacting him. |

Colonel Bob Whitlow 1963
Well, he's not a coach, but if we started a thread for his official title, I believe he'd be the only one in it.
Whitlow was the retired Air Force colonel hired by Phil Wrigley to oversee the zoo that was the Cubs in the third year of the infamous rotating "college of coaches," 1963. Wrigley gave him the title "Athletic Director" and a uniform, and presumably wished him the best of luck. Apparently the only decision he really made was that the rotating manager system was nonsense. He kept Bob Kennedy - with the title "Head Coach" - for all of 1963 and 1964, and then Whitlow quit. Bobby Hofman - A's
A while back I was searching for an image of Hofman as a coach with the A's in the 1970s, and could only muster 1 or 2 B&W images. I just found this one on SABR's site Hofman Bio page.

Frankie Frisch HOF 1949
After being dismissed by the Pirates after the 1946 season, "The Fordham Flash" spent two years broadcasting Giants games on WNBT television (now WNBC) and WMCA radio, until Leo Durocher lured him back into uniform to coach at the start of 1949. Frisch was only a coach until the Cubs kicked Charlie Grimm upstairs in June and hired Frisch to replace him.
The picture we have of Frisch in the coaches pack captures him in a dour mood, in a road uniform, and has some of his cheek missing (from the developed photo, not in reality). This Lexibell picture from spring training in Phoenix seems an improvement, IMO. (I removed the text and the sepia coloring, and did a little brightening and sharpening.) |

Salty Parker 1936 (Player) 1958 (Coach)
Merry Christmas, #4
A Six-week infielder with the 1936 Tigers, Salty Parker was a major league coach every season but one between 1958 and 1974 (with a one-season redux in 1979). While he changed jobs seven times, it's telling that he was twice brought back to teams he had worked for years before (Giants 1958-1961 and again '79; Angels 1964-66 and again 1973-74). This nice image is from the Dexter Press negatives collection and dates to 1966. The next year, Parker coached for the Mets (and served as their manager for the last 11 games of the season) and the Dexter image in their uniform is posted in the managers' thread: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ml#post4129109 Last edited by Merkle923; 08-05-2017 at 12:36 PM. |

George Myatt (1938)
Five years a utility infielder, and for two wartime seasons the starting second baseman of the Senators, George Myatt went on to coach - usually third base - for 23 consecutive seasons ending in 1972.
He worked for the Senators, White Sox, Cubs, Braves, Tigers and - for the last decade of his career - the Phillies. When the Phils fired Gene Mauch as manager in 1968 Myatt took over as skipper (and went 2-0) until Bob Skinner took over for good. But they'd fire Skinner the next season and Myatt managed the last 54 Phils games. This is from the Dexter collection. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-05-2017 at 12:36 PM. |

Johnny Sain (1942)
Famed as a pitcher, famed as an iconoclastic pitching coach (18 years, six different teams).
He ran the pitching staffs of three World's Champions and two more American League pennant winners. But the emphasis was on the words "he ran" and his territoriality about his hurlers tended to make his stays short-term. Sain had a three-year stint in New York, then two seasons in Minnesota, and three with the Tigers (with whom he is shown in this unpublished Dexter image from 1967). A's Coaches, 1977
I know Lee Stange was the A's pitching coach in '77, but I'm trying to uncover the specific roles (hitting, baselines) served by Cal Ermer, Red Schoendienst, and Bobby Hofman. Any help is appreciated.

To the best of my recollection, Red Schoendienst was the first base coach. The others, I couldn't tell you.

Glenn Ezell
As a Rangers coach. Heavily shadowed, but larger and possibly better than the Rangers image posted earlier in this thread by tnfoto. This was from an eBay auction from seller autographsink.

Jimmie Dykes
Baseball lifer Jimmie Dykes spent only one season with the Braves (1962), and a rare Topps Vault image of Dykes with Milwaukee was cleaned up in the new "general discussion" thread.
His playing career began way back in 1918 with the Philadelphia Athletics, playing for Connie Mack until moving to the White Sox for the 1933 season. The following year, he became the team's player-manager, and would appear as a player until 1939. Much more prominent as a manager, he spent 1934-46 as skipper for the White Sox; 1951-53 running the Athletics; 1954 with the Orioles, part of '58 managing the Reds; managing the Tigers in 1959-60 and the Indians in 1960-61. He passed away in 1976. But Dykes' journey as a coach began in 1949-50 with the Philadelphia Athletics, then coached again with Cincinnati from 1955-58; Pittsburgh in 1959; and ended his career again with the Athletics in 1963-84. |
