Mexican Baseball League to Start June 28th

June 24th, 1925 - Mexico City, Mexico

Following the merger of the Mexican Baseball Association and the Mexico City Baseball Association, manager Ernesto Carmona and Alejandro Aguilar Reyes "Fray Nano" have announced the formation of the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol. After several meetings with team owners, they have reached the following agreements:

- Messrs. Eduardo Ampudia (México), Ernesto Carmona (Agraria), Gral. Andrés Zarzoza (74 Regimiento), Agustín Verde (Águila), Jesús García (Guanajuato) and Jorge Bixler (Nacional) will be the owners of the Liga Mexicana clubs
- The league will be formed by 6 teams with a schedule of 14 games per team, starting on June 28th and ending July 14th of the present year
- Every club can have a maximum of 20 players or less, Mexicans and foreigners, according to each one's needs
- Inscription is 50 pesos per club. If a club retires, they have 24-48 hours to reintegrate, otherwise they'll be out of the league

These were the most important of 35 points touched during the last meeting. The league is set to start on Sunday, Jun 28th with the game between Club México and Agraria de México.

------------------------
Some notes about this save:
- I will be starting a historical game in 1925
- Real transactions and lineups are on to have MLB results as close to real
- I added the Mexican League and will be changing it according to real life changes when necessary

- The first 11 years, players will be fake because tracking of statistics began in 1937
- From 1937 on, player ratings will be calculated using OOTPs engine based on IRL stats (where available)

- When a Mexican player moves to the MLB, I will delete the player automatically created by the historical engine and replace him with the one I created, this so players have their full history including the Mexican leagues*
*Players originally drafted into the MLB, such as Marco Estrada, will not be edited in any way

Play Ball!
June 29th, 1925 - Mexico City, Mexico

We had our first-ever Opening Day in Mexico City as Nacional defeated Agraria 1-0 in nine innings. Javier Palomo collected the league's first ever hit with David Hernandez collecting the first win after allowing 6 hits and no runs.

Elsewhere, Guanajuato defeated Club México 2-0 and 74 Regimiento bested Rojos del Águila 7-4. Águila's Victor Centeno hit the league's first home run in his team's loss.

Guanajuato crowned First Liga Mexicana Champions
July 18th, 1925 - Guanajuato, Mexico

After a game that can only be described as a "long and hard-fought battle," Guanajuato will be crowned as the first-ever Liga Mexicana Champions. Here are the final standings:

# Team - Rcrd - W% - GB
1. Guanajuato - 9-5 - .667 - -
2. México - 9-5 - .667 - -
3. Nacional - 7-7 - .500 - 2
4. 74 Regimiento - 7-7 - .500 - 2
5. Águila - 6-8 - .429 - 3
6. Carmona* - 4-10 - .286 - 5

*Agrario changed its name mid-season

Due to the tie for first place, a tiebreaker game was scheduled between Guanajuato and Club México. It was a long and hard-fought battle.
Guanajuato's Harry Perez reached on a single in the bottom of the first. Then Jorge Peña made an error. Then Alex Perez grounded out. Then Bobby Palos hit a sacrifice fly and Harry scored.
That was it until the top of the 5th. Picture José Torres in the batter's box, two outs with runners on third and second. He then proceeds to have a 9-pitch battle, including 4 straight fouls before scorching a groundball for a single, allowing both runners to score.
One inning later, Armando Baca tied the game for Guanajuato with another sacrifice fly.
From there, it was a pitching battle. México's Rubén García threw 11 innings, 138 pitches while Nelson Vazquez threw 172 pitches in the same amount of innings.
Finally, in the bottom of the 12th, Alex Perez hit an infield single with the bases loaded to end the game and seal the championship win for Guanajuato.

------------------------------------------
Comparison to real life:
# Team - Rcrd - W% - GB
1. 74 Regimento - 10-4 - .667 - -
2. México - 10-4 - .667 - -
3. Carmona - 8-6 - .571 - 1.5
4. Nacional - 7-7 - .500 - 3.5
5. Guanajuato - 5-9 - .357 - 5.0
6. Águila - 0-10 - .000 - 8.0

Just like in the sim, there was a tiebreaker in real life. Except that in real life, it was a 4-game series which 74 Regimiento won over Club México to become the first champions of the LMB in reality.

1926 Liga Mexicana Season set to start
April 24th, 1926

The league presented today the changes made before the 1926 season as well as the schedule.

Following a not-so-successful season, 74 Regimiento de Puebla moved to San Luis Potosí and will now play as the Tuneros. Nacional de México and Rojos del Águila de Veracruz have folded as well. Despite this, the league has now expanded to 7 teams with the inclusion of Artillería de México, Ocampo de Jalapa and Gertrudis de México.

There is a new 25-game schedule with games played only on weekends and a split-season format. The winner from the first half will face the winner from the second half in the Final Series. The league will start July 3rd, with Guanajuato facing Jalapa.

1926 Mexican League Baseball comes to a close
August 31st, 1926

After the last weekend of games, we finally know which teams will be facing each other in the Serie Final: Gabay de Pachuca and Agricultura de México. Here are the full standings:
First Half
#. Team - Rcrd. - W% - GB
1. Gertrudis - 9-3 - .750 - -
2. Guanajuato - 8-4 - .667 - 1
3. Carmona - 6-6 - .500 - 3
4. Jalapa - 6-6 - .500 - 3
5. Artillería - 5-7 - .417 - 4
6. San Luis - 4-8 - .333 - 5
7. México - 3-9 - .250 - 6

Second Half
#. Team - Rcrd. - W% - GB
1. Agricultura* - 6-2 - .750 - -
2. Artillería - 7-3 - .750 - -
3. México - 6-4 - .600 - 1
4. Jalapa - 6-4 - .600 - 1
5. Pachuca** - 4-3 - .571 - 1.5
6. San Luis - 3-7 - .300 - 4
7. Guanajuato - 2-9 - .182 - 5.5

*Agricultura de México replaced Carmona in the league
** Gertrudis moved to Pachuca and became Gabay de Pachuca

------------------------------
Comparison to real life:

In real life, Jalapa won both halfs and were crowned champions with no need for a final series. San Luis abandonded the league after 4 games with México and Guanajuato abandoning after 3 games in the second half. I tried to emulate this by releasing their players and auto-filling with lower quality ones.

Agricultura de México win first title
September 7th, 1926

Agricultura completed a Final Series sweep of Pachuca to take home their first Championship. Despite their hardships this season which included a name change, Carmona's boys dominated Pachuca winning 2-1, 2-1 and 7-1 with former Phillie, Lew Fonseca, taking the Series MVP honors.

Harry and Alex Perez, who played with Guanajuato last year, won their second title in a row and became the first ever players to do so.

Champions Disappear
April 28th, 1927

Following the preseason meetings of the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol, it was announced that Guanajuato and Agricultura de México had decided not to continue in the league. It was also announced that Gendarmería de México will take their place instead. Club México and Tuneros de San Luis will also return to the league, following their abandonments last season. Guanajuato and Agricultura will always be remembered as the first league champions.

The 1927 season will start July 2nd and will consist of 16 games per team, to be played only on weekends. There will be no playoffs this year, meaning the team with the best record will be crowned 1927 Liga Mexicana Champion.

Many changes ahead of 1928 season with Pachuca the only team left
April 26th, 1928

Today, the Liga Mexicana's President made some very important announcements regarding the league. Most importantly, he announced that all teams, except Pachuca, had decided to leave the league. Gabay de Pachuca would change its name to Pachuca de Hidalgo.

Here are the new teams that will start play this season:
Bravo Izquierdo de Puebla
Carmona de México
Chiclets Adams de México
Policía del Distrito Federal
Sindicato de México
Tigres de Comintra

All of them except Puebla play in Mexico City.
Fray Nano also announced the new schedule, consisting of 18 games per team with games played only on weekends. There will be no playoffs, so the first placed team after 18 games will be crowned champion of the 1928 season. The season will start June 30th with Pachuca hosting Carmona.

Pachuca win first title
August 8th, 1928

Pachuca de Hidalgo have won the 1928 Liga Mexicana de Beisbol after a dominating season. They become the fourth different team to win the championship. Here are the full standings:

#. Team - Rcrd. - W% - GB
1. Pachuca - 11-4 - .733 - -
2. Chiclets Adams - 9-6 - .600 - 2.0
3. Policía - 8-7 - .533 - 3.0
4. Carmona - 8-7 - .533 - 3.0
5. Comintra - 8-10 - .444 - 4.5
6. Puebla - 5-10 - .333 - 6.0
7. Sindicato - 5-10 - .333 - 6.0

---------------------------
Comparison to real life
#. Team - Rcrd. - W% - GB
1. Policía - 13-5 - .722 - -
2. Puebla - 13-5 - .722 - -
3. Carmona - 9-8 - .529 - 3.5
4. Comintra - 8-10 - .444 - 5.0
5. Sindicato - 7-10 - .412 - 5.5
6. Chiclets Adams - 6-11 - .353 - 6.5
7. Pachuca - 5-12 - .294 - 7.5

Policía won their first and only title after beating Puebla in a tiebreak series.

Note: I'm going fast through these early seasons simply because there is no real life data available aside from teams folding/appearing, schedule lengths and standings. When we reach the 1937 season I will go slower, perhaps month-by-month with updates about storylines, players, new teams, etc. as I believe the most interesting part of this sim will be seeing how the real life players perform and how their teams do.

Changes ahead of 1929 LMB season
March 28th, 1929

4 teams to disappear with 2 new ones to join the league before this season, announced league president Alejandro Reyes. The new league will look like this:
Club Azcapotzalco
Tigres de Comintra
Chiclets Adams de México
Delta de México
Bravo Izquierdo de Puebla

The season will have an early start in late May and teams will play 16 games each, only on weekends. Again, there are no playoffs, so the team with the best record after 16 games will be crowned champion.

Chiclets Adams Win First Title
July 2nd, 1929

After a strong season in which they lost only 3 games, Chiclets Adams de México have won their first ever LMB Championship, becoming the fifth different team to do so. Here are the full standings:

#. Team - Rcrd. - W% - GB
1. Chiclets - 11-3 - .786 - -
2. Puebla - 6-7 - .462 - 4.5
3. Comintra - 5-6 - .455 - 4.5
4. Azcapotzalco - 5-8 - .385 - 5.5
5. Delta - 5-8 - .385 - 5.5

And for the first time ever, we present this year's "Best Nine"
P - Rubén García (Chiclets Adams)
C - Hank Severeid (Puebla)
1B - Carlos Domínguez (Azcapotzalco)
2B - Carlos Reyes (Delta)
3B - Rubén Ramírez (Chiclets Adams)
SS - Mike Durán (Puebla)
LF - Howie Williamson (Delta)
CF - Tony Acuña (Comintra)
RF - Tony López (Delta)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: My copy of The Mexican League: Comprehensive player statistics 1937-2001 arrived today! So I'll get to simming these early seasons faster and work on setting the stats to start playing out the "modern" seasons.

Comparison to real life:
#. Team - Rcrd. - W% - GB
1. Chiclets - 11-5 - .688 - -
2. Delta - 11-5 - .688 - -
3. Comintra - 7-9 - .438 - 4.0
4. Puebla - 7-9 - .438 - 4.0
5. Azcapotzalco - 4-12 - .250 - 7.0

A 3 game series was won by Chiclets Adams to win the championship. The "Best Nine" was also real:
P - Charles Cortizzos
C - Pancho Torrijos
1B - Ramón Montes de Oca
2B - Rafael Argumosa
3B - Chon Ortega
SS - Chucho Torrijos
OF - Jesús Becerril
OF - Berlín Gutiérrez
OF - Rafael Reyna

Again, stats were not collected from these early seasons and with 8 years to go until that point it is unlikely that we see any of these names again.

Chiclets Adams Win Back-to-Back Championships!
July 14th, 1930

The best way to follow up a championship season is with another championship season, or at least that's the way it is for Chiclets Adams de México who have officially won their second championship, this time under Agustín Suárez. Full standings can be seen below:

#. Team - Rcrd. - W% - GB
1. Chiclets - 18-7 - .720 - -
2. Delta - 14-11 - .560 - 4.0
3. Comintra - 14-11 - .560 - 4.0
4. Cardenales - 11-14 - .440 - 7.0
5. Hidalgo - 9-16 - .360 - 9.0
6. Obras - 9-16 - .360 - 9.0
-------------------------------------------------------
Comparison to real life:
#. Team - Rcrd. - W% - GB
1. Comintra - 19-6 - .720 - -
2. Obras - 13-12 - .520 - 6.0
3. Hidalgo - 13-12 - .520 - 6.0
4. Delta - 12-13 - .480 - 7.0
5. Chiclets - 12-13 - .480 - 7.0
6. Cardenales - 6-19 - .240 - 13.0

The book doesn't mention a "Best Nine" for this season, and it only mentions some of the managers, which I have put in game.

1932 Will Have Early Start
March 2nd, 1932

It was announced that this year's season will begin in early may, the earliest it has ever been in its short history. Opening Day will begin with a match between reigning champions Tigres de Comintra and Chiclets Adams de México.

It was also announced that Leones de Obras Públicas and Comunicaciones de México would not be participating in this year's league, with Cardenales de Puebla taking their place.

Despite having one team less, the schedule will be longer this year, up to a total of 36 games per team. As always, matches will be played only on weekends.

Melo Makes History!
September 20th, 1933

Yesterday marked a historic date for baseball in Mexico as well as for the MLB. Cleveland visited Boston and, in the 9th inning, Baldomero "Melo" Almada made his debut with the Red Sox, becoming the first mexican player to debut in the Major Leagues. Melo was 1-0 with a strike-out.

The 20-year-old from Sonora had been playing in AAA with the Seattle Indians for two years, accumulating a .346/.391/.422 line which caught the eye of Doug Reed, Boston's General Manager. Melo had been with the team for a couple days before finally being played in the game against Cleveland.
