Season's End

28 games better than reality in '72. Lots of pieces in play for the future.

The Orioles take the Pirates in 7 games.

Despite the finish, I get a 444 score...which is a disappointing reward for a 2nd place finish. On to 1973...

Who would trade that many players/prospects for a bench player like Gamble. Seems you fleeced the AI.

First time in this sim. Put the hammer to him. Was kind of astonished at the level of stupid. Reminded myself the Astors traded Morgan, the Mets traded Ryan, the Red Sox sold Ruth...any other franchises I should insult?

Yes, the Mariners and every trade they ever made besides the one for Buhner, lol.

1973 is about to start. Traded Tommy Hilgendorf for Tim McCarver. Bracing to make a run? Who knows...

Well, one if my cats died...and I've had pneumonia. Between the two, I've pretty much blown off posting about the Phils.

1973 was an injury decimated season...so bad that adding Fergie Jenkins couldn't bring us any farther than 77-85.

Of course, it didn't help that the Pirates won 106. Gene Clines and Richie Hebner (29 HR) hit 350+ for them, Bob Robertson hit 39 dingers, Gaylord Perry, Nelson Briles, and Dock Ellis sparkled. Giusti was great in the pen. Got crushed by a better unit. Prepping for the 74 season...

Finally back to reporting on this. 1973 was a 77 win campaign, and a relatively quiet off season.

1974...another story. After spending half a season watching Davey Lopes get caught stealing, and I seriously don't know how he can be sub 50% with that speed, and having 11 guys on the 60 day, including 3 of my planned starting 5, I find myself at roster expansion with a 1 game lead over the testy defending champ Pirates. Lee May (.332, 30HR) is carrying us on his back. Rose has also had a great season so far.

Aided by Kenny Forsch and 6 innings of 2 hit ball, the Pirates go down 3-0. The lead is 2 1/2 games on the 2nd of September...

Pirates inflict humiliating 14-4 loss on us...Charley Hough—gotta find an upgrade. Couldn't even bear to play it out.

Tommy John...8 hits, no walks, no runs. Lee May with 2 hits, including the triple that broke it open, and we smuck the Cubs 7-0 in the Friendly Confines.
