I like Historical but none of the guys have History like shown who they were Drafted by and Template of one I saved Fictional Guys would be in Draft if added to this Year's and if add this Year's to a Historical League like let's says 1979 guys like Chris Archer and so on would show Missed Season and not their age back then.

I noticed Monte Ward had 111 sb in 1887. I just overlooked it before.

I like trying to change history. I'm in a historical sim right now (which I'm going to start posting here) that starts at a crossroads. I like seeing how I stack up against what happened in real life.

David I stopped playing historical a long while back...


But I would start to play almost 100% if we could get access to the stats minor league database, but use any league and minor league set up we want. make it access to basically just be a player DB like the spritze db used to be (generally the current one is real good for setting up things like players fielding ratings, esp for minor league guys)


I just like to have 20 teams and 1 or 2 minor leagues for the period 1890-1950 and then start expanding from there....Cant do that with the minor league db at present.
So if that would change, I would go back to historical

I was going to start a new thread but this looks like a great thread to comment and ask a few questions...


Over the years I've loved simming teams and seasons from the 1920s to 1970s - grew up a Twins fan so love simming 20s Senators and 60s and 70s Twins, lived in Milwaukee for years so also sim 50s Braves and 80s Brewers, also love Brooklyn Dodgers and other historical teams like 30s and 70s As and 30s Cardinals.


Lately I've been getting into deadball era too. Rereading Glory of Their Times and re-watching the Ken Burns documentary.


Been replaying Connie Mack A's, the Senators, and Joe McCarthy Giants. Really fun - but why do Eddie Collins, Walter Johnson, and Christy Mathewson (and other big stars) always get hurt right before the World Series? Argh.


Anyway, how do you guys set up your leagues?


There aren't any farm systems before 1915. I kind of like the New Player drafts (and definitely like the options to trade etc.) but the teams I've been simming do pretty well and miss the top players in the draft, so after 10 years or so they start to decline (certainly due in part to my sucky GM abilities - LOL). There are certainly gems to be had later in the draft - picked up a pitcher, Babe Ruth, as the A's.


Tips? What settings do you guys use to set up your league? Best way you've found to acquire players? Trades? Minors? Draft? If you do "Historical Farm System," don't some of the prospects you'd normally draft land in your organization?

Why Historical? I'm a Red Sox fan. I also grew up watching the TV show Quantum Leap.

Given the team's history of hilariously incompetent roster and/or on-field management from ~1919 through 2003, OOTP is the perfect mechanism to "strive to put right what once went wrong," to quote the show's opening.

I'm wading back into this after ~2 years out of the game (bought OOTP 19 and never used it), due to getting into a strategy game that monopolized my available gaming time, but I've gotten the itch again.

I'm getting antsy to revive my "100% corrected Red Sox history" universe, where I went through every transaction the Red Sox made from 1901-1987 on b-ref and constructed what the depth chart "should" have been if the team had "Ziggy" helping them out with avoiding stupid moves. Fortunately, I kept my old spreadsheets around and won't have to restart from scratch, the only thing I have left to decide is whether to keep simulating a month at a time from 1987 onward, or to go back and start manually playing out games (probably starting in 1939).

Historical leagues cant sim as far as fictional leagues can but is that a bad thing? How many years is too many to sim when there is no historical time frame? If you could sim till almost every team has 30 championships would it be as fun as a shorter one? I dont know.

Its not just seeing how historical players do but it allows you to rewrite history. Lets say you sim the 1986 and the Mets win again but do they do it easier because in your sim world the story is that Gooden and Strawberry
stay clean. The White sox dont throw the series because Chicago doesnt make it to the series but how do you explain all 8 players being released in 1920? Cant use the series gambling story as Chicago didnt make it.
You are free to develop the story as your historical league grows.

Its not just replaying a season and expecting the same exact stats.
I've always been satisfied with stats within the ballpark of a players real life performance. I wouldn't want the same exact stats for as the real leagues. Though i have to admit it was fun to see Ty Cobb have a career avg of .367 in a sim league i once had. Though how he got there was not exactly the same as the real Cobb did.
