Monday, September 9, Year II

We are back home to begin a 2 week home stand, the final one of the year, before we finish the regular season with a week on the road. The Los Angeles Angels are here to play a 3 game series. They were swept in 3 games at Seattle over the weekend, so they are coming here a bit embarrassed. We are 8-7 against them on the season and won 2 of 3 the last time they were in Portland, July 29-31. They are 11th in scoring in the PCL with 3.38 runs per game (Portland is down to #6 with 4.19). Spots 4-6 are bunched up together. The Angels are 8th in fewest runs allowed with 4.15 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.13). Our team ERA is now 2.79. No one else is under 3.

I am not superstitious, but...

The San Francisco Seals are in town to play a 3 game series over the weekend. The just beat the Padres 2 games at home to move into 2nd place in the PCL West. Dave Lesley flies out to right and Austin scores without a throw. 4 to 3, Beavers! PH Woody Griesbach (24-R) strikes out...

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Lou Hertzberg (30-L). Larry Sinchak is in to play 3rd, Eddie Thomas is in to play short, Rollie Ferree is in to play left and Bob Draper moves to right. With 1 out, PH Marcos Barron (33-R) lines a hit to right. Dan Fortino walks... Javy Vasquez doubles to center and Barron scores to tie the game... 4 to 4. Chris Greenwald strikes out! Sandy Mojica pops out to 1st!

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:
They go down in order!

Bottom of the Tenth:
Rollie Ferree, who needs a hit to keep his average from dropping below .400, grounds a single to right! Bob Draper lays down a sacrifice bunt, but beats it out for a hit! Eddie Thomas, does not bunt, but swings away and pops out to shallow center. Why? PH Phil Parker (28-S) the last bat on the bench, squibs one in front of the plate and they get a force at 2nd, 2-4. Ferree goes to 3rd. Larry Sinchak swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to left...

Top of the Eleventh:

New Pitcher: Mitch Dowdell (26-L). They go down in order!

Bottom of the Eleventh:

New Pitcher: Gus Hanauer (29-R) with a 1.27 ERA in 71 IP. 46 H and 19 BB for an 0.92 WHIP and only 1 HR allowed. Batters are hitting .182 against him. In 4 innings against him, we have 1 hit, no walks and 4 SO. Paul Bouvet leads off with a line drive over the left field fence and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!!!

Won - 5 to 4 in 11 innings

We had 10 hits and made no errors

RHP Gus Hanauer (L 6-2) faced 1 batter, who hit a home run.

2B Paul Bouvet had 2 hits with his 9th home run as a Beaver. It ended the game. C Dave Benya went 1 for 1 before getting hurt. C Dennis Webb had 2 hits and a walk, scored a run and had an RBI. CF Jeff Schottler had 2 hits with a double and 2 walks, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. 1B Jeff Austin had a double, scored a run and had his 86th RBI of the season, setting a new Beaver high for a season. LF Rollie Ferree had a hit in his only trip to the plate.

Pepe's report on Dave Benya is not good. A sore back that will likely keep him out of action about 3 weeks, which will cut into the post season.

I am not superstitious, but...

P Tom Horn (26-L) is eligible to come off the DL. Do you even remember him? He was 7-5 in 24 starts last year with a 3.14 ERA before needing elbow surgery on August 20. He has not pitched since. All 5 of the guys in our rotation are pitching very well right now and I am a little chicken to put a fellow who has not pitched in over a year right into the thick of it when we are shooting hard for 100 wins (which I want very badly). He has options, so we are shipping him to Vancouver (AAA) and we'll see if he has anything left to maybe make the rotation next year.

San Francisco Seals (83-65 .561 10 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (93-55 .628 in 1st place in the PCL West)

SF: Brad Simpson (35-R 16-9 2.88) vs. POR: Brian Hagans (26-R 4-3 2.97) Rookie

Simpson is 0-2 in his last 3 starts, but they were all Quality Starts. He has not allowed more than 3 runs in a game since July 16 (11 starts). We are 3-1 against him, but the win was his last outing when he held us to 1 run and 4 hits and no walks in 8 IP.

Hagans lost his last outing, giving up 4 runs in 5 innings.

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome

Attendance: 27,614

Top of the First:

Bottom of the First:
Paul Bouvet grounds out to 3rd. Dennis Webb strikes out. Jeff Schottler grounds out to 2nd...

Stan Ward beats out an infield hit... Chip Carpenter strikes out. Bill Giffin swings at the first pitch and pops out to 3rd.

Bottom of the Fourth:
Jeff Schottler grounds a hit to center. With 2 outs, Bob Draper singles to right and Schottler takes 3rd without a throw. Omar Flores swings at a 3-2 pitch and homers to left center!!! 3 to 1, Beavers!

Top of the Fifth:

With 2 outs, Chris Greenwald singles to center. Tim Roberts takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Ron Chestnut lines a hit to left center and Greenwald heads home.....he beats the throw... 3 to 2, Beavers. Greenwald is hurt, though. With the runners on the move, Javy Vasquez swings at a 3-2 pitch and lines a hit to left and Roberts scores without a throw to tie the game at 3... The Bullpen is up. Stan Ward swings at the first pitch and grounds out to short. Why couldn't someone have done that a little sooner?

Bottom of the Fifth:

With 1 out, Dennis Webb beats out an infield hit. Jeff Schottler lines a hit to right and Webb beats the throw to 3rd. Jeff Austin grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and Webb scores. 4 to 3, Beavers. Tony Casarez lines out to center.

Bottom of the Sixth:

Bob Draper leads off and whacks a 2-2 pitch down the right field line for a double. They walk Omar Flores intentionally. Dave Lesley grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and Draper goes to 3rd. With P Brian Hagans already at 104 pitches, we pull him down and send up PH Gordon Saunderson (27-L). He lines a hit to right and Draper scores and Lesley beats the throw to 3rd! 5 to 3, Beavers! That sends P Brad Simpson to the showers. New Pitcher: Harlan Martin (25-R) with a 1.43 ERA. Paul Bouvet triples to center and 2 more runs score! 7 to 3, Beavers! Do you remember when Bouvet was hitting a triple almost every game, it seemed? This is his first in September and he only hit 1 in August. Dennis Webb grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and Bouvet holds at 3rd for some reason. Jeff Schottler swings at a 3-2 pitch and strikes out.

Won - 7 to 3

RF Bob Draper had 2 hits with a double and scored 2 runs. 3B Omar Flores was 3 for 3 with his 6th home run of the season and a walk (INT) and 3 RBI. PH Gordon Saunderson had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI.

The Seals announced that Chris Greenwald just had a bruised knee and would be fine in a day or two.

We are finished with the Seals this year and we won the season series, 12-6. Last year, we split it, 9-9.

Down on the Farm:
In his season debut for Vancouver (AAA), Tom Horn (26-L) pitched 5.2 hitless innings. He did not allow a run, but walked 4 and only struck out 1. Not bad, for someone who has not pitched in over a year!

Randy Hobson grounds a hit to center and both runners score... 2 to 0, Seattle. I would not have minded an intentional walk right there. Okay, Christy, okay! We get the Bullpen up. You happy, now? Oscar Reynoso swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to the pitcher.

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 20,818

Top of the First:
Paul Blaine grounds an 0-2 pitch to right for a hit. Randy Hobson grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. Jim Rier flies out to center. Mark Fenik lines a hit to right and Hobson makes it to 3rd without a throw. Jim Perkins swings at the first pitch and grounds out to the pitcher!

Bottom of the First:

Paul Bouvet grounds a hit to left. Dennis Webb lines a hit to right and Bouvet has to stop at 2nd because Webb hit the ball too hard. Jeff Schottler grounds a hit to right and the bases are loaded with nobody out. Jeff Austin flies out to right and Bouvet beats the throw home. 1 to 0, Beavers! Webb tagged up at 2nd and went to 3rd. Tony Casarez lines out to center and Jim Perkins fires to 1st to double off Schottler...

Top of the Second:

With 1 out, Bob Dillon grounds out to short and P Bob Grigg calls Pepe out... New Pitcher: Jorge Reyna (32-R). He strikes out Herb Leavitt.

Bottom of the Second:

Bob Draper floats a soft little hit to center and goes to 2nd on a ground out by Omar Flores. Dave Lesley lines a hit to right and Draper scores! 2 to 0, Beavers!

Top of the Third:

P Alan Merandi leads off with a double to center. Jeff Schottler gambled trying to make the catch and the ball got by him. Paul Blaine lines a hit to right. Randy Hobson takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and we get the Bullpen up. The bases are loaded with no outs... Jim Rier grounds a hit to center and Merandi scores. 2 to 1, Beavers. Mark Fenik flies out to deep right and Blaine scores and Hobson takes 3rd. 2 to 2, tie game. Call to the Bullpen: Lou Hertzberg (30-L). Jim Perkins strikes out! Terry Singer swings at the first pitch and flies out to right!

Bottom of the Third:
Our 2-3-4 hitters go down 1-2-3....

And we just plain stop hitting....

Top of the Eighth:

On the Hill: Mitch Dowdell (26-L), beginning his second inning of work. There are no fresh arms left in the Pen.... With 1 out, Jim Perkins doubles to center. We walk Terry Singer intentionally. Bob Dillon grounds a hit to left and Perkins heads home....Tony Casarez doe not throw Perkins out, but he does throw his shoulder out.... 3 to 2, Seattle. Woody Griesbach goes in to play left. Let's just get everybody hurt for the Championship Series! Dowdell gets the next two out.

Bottom of the Eighth:

New Pitcher: Danny Gilmore (29-R), who's ERA is down to 1.69 now... Paul Bouvet grounds a hit to left. New Pitcher: John King (27-L) with a 2.82 ERA in 115 IP. We let Dennis Webb bat, hoping he will bunt. He does not, preferring to strike out... Jeff Schottler grounds a hit to left. A passed ball by rookie C Herb Leavitt moves the runners up. And Jeff Austin looks at strike three.... you HAVE to swing there with a runner on 3rd and less than two outs!!!! This drives me nuts.... Woody Griesbach draws a walk... That brings P Mitch Dowdell to the plate... We obviously cannot let him hit. PH Rollie Ferree (29-R) is sent up. He grounds out to short....

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Mike Aaberg (24-R), their closer. They did me a big favor by pulling the left-hander... Though we will still lose, now that I jinxed them... Aaberg has 4 SV with a 3.67 ERA in 41.2 IP. He is a rookie. Omar Flores grounds a 2-2 pitch to right for a hit. Dave Lesley bunts him to 2nd. Gordon Saunderson swings at a 3-2 pitch and loops a hit to left. Flores stops at 3rd... Of course, he does... Aaberg is hurt, though... New Pitcher: Scott Mortensen (33-R) with a 3.41 ERA in 71.1 IP. Paul Bouvet lines out to left and Flores holds... Dennis Webb strikes out.... Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.....

Lost - 3 to 2

We gad 12 hits and made 1 error
Seattle had 9 hits and made no errors

Bob Grigg went 1.2 scoreless innings and allowed 2 hits.
RHP Jorge Reyna got 2 outs, allowed 2 runs, 3 hits and 1 walk.
LHP Lou Hertzberg went 4.1 scoreless innings, allowed 2 hits, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 5. 60 pitches.
LHP Mitch Dowdell (L 5-4) went 1.1 innings, allowed 1 run, 2 hits, 1 walk (INT) and struck out 2.
RHP Don Schmidt went 1 perfect inning and struck out 1.

Alan Merandi (W 7-16) went 7 innings, gave us 2 runs, 8 hits, no walks and struck out 1. He lowers his ERA to 5.95.... At bat, he hit a double and scored a run.
RHP Scott Mortensen (SV 5) faced 2 batters and got them both out with 1 strikeout.

2B Paul Bouvet had 2 hits and scored a run. C Dennis Webb had 2 hits. CF Jeff Schottler had 2 hits. RF Bob Draper had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. SS Dave Lesley had 2 hits and an RBI. RF Gordon Saunderson had a hit.

Pepe's report: Bob Grigg has a stiff back that will bother him for a week or so, but should only affect his batting and running and should not bother him pitching too much. Tony Casarez, on the other hand, is out for 6 weeks, at least, which means no post-season for him....

Seattle announced that Mike Aaberg had strained his back and will not pitch again this season, but should be fine in 3 or 4 weeks.

We are done with Seattle for this year and won the season series, 12-6. We won it, 11-7, last year.

Wednesday, September 18, Year II

We placed LF Tony Casarez (20-L) on the Disabled List and recalled RP Barry Chapman (27-R), because our Bullpen is spent right at the moment. Chapman was not all that great in Vancouver (AAA). He had a 3.33 ERA, walking 11 and giving up 3 HR in 27 IP. But he only gave up 16 hits. And he is fairly fresh, which is the main thing...

The San Diego Padres are in town to play 2 games. They just lost 2 in Los Angeles and have lost 7 in a row and 13 of their last 14. They finished August winning 11 of 12 and have started September losing 13 of 15. We are 11-2 against them on the season and won 3 of 4 the last time they were in the Skydome, June 13-16. The Padres are 8th in the PCL in scoring with 3.95 runs per game (Portland is #6 with 4.21). They are 6th in fewest runs allowed with 3.97 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.14).

San Diego Padres (81-70 .536 14 GB in 3rd place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (95-56 .629 in 1st place in the PCL West)

SD: Mike Nackley (28-L 13-13 3.23) PCL CY 2 time All-Star vs. POR: Don Panighetti (26-L 12-8 2.81) 2 time All-Star

Nackley, who was the lights out best pitcher in baseball last year, has fallen on hard times of late. He last lost his last 4 starts and allowed at least 4 runs each time. We are 3-0 against him this year, though he did have one really good game against us.

Panighetti had a no decision last time out, allowing 3 runs and 7 hits and 3 BB in 5 IP.

4: RF Bob Welch (37-R .252-266-7-33-.732)

Top of the Eighth:

On the Hill: Oscar Soto (30-R), beginning his second inning of work after a scoreless seventh with only his own error marring his performance. Dave Lesley doubles to center. Paul Bouvet draws a walk to force in a run! 6 to 1, Beavers! Omar Flores swings at the first pitch, a big fat one right down the middle, and triples to center!! 3 runs are in!! 9 to 1, Beavers! Jeff Schottler swings at a 3-2 pitch and doubles to the left field corner! Flores scores! 10 to 1, Beavers! We have scored 10 runs in a game 6 times this season; we have not scored 11... Omar Soto is relieved. New Pitcher: Joe Thomas (30-L) with a 4.93 ERA. Jeff Austin grounds out to short. 2 outs. Down to our last chance to score more than 10 in a game.... Woody Griesbach grounds a hit to center and Schottler scores without a throw!!! 11 to 1, Beavers! That ties our all-time mark! We scored 11 twice last year. For the season, we drew 1,819,273 fans. Not a great number for a 2 time division winning club, but up from last year's 1,666,706. Boston leads Baseball with 2.8 million. This team had been a loser so long that I think there just are not that many baseball fans left. If we can keep up the winning, they will come...

Butch Nelson pops out to shallow right. Mark Saylor jumps on the first pitch and hits a home run to right... 1 to 0, Padres. Roger Rojas lines a hit to left. He tries to steal 2nd, but C Phil Parker guns him down! Bob Welch pops out to 2nd.

Bottom of the Second:

With 2 outs, Otis Smith, batting seventh because he can't hit lefties, hits a home run to right... 2 to 0, Padres. It is only his 2nd home run of the season off a lefty. 26 against right-handers.

Bottom of the Third:
P Mike Nackley, batting .056, leads off with a hit to center... Butch Nelson lines a hit to left and we get the Bullpen up. Mark Saylor grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-6. They have scored in every inning and we have 1 total base runner...

Top of the Fifth:
We finally get our second base runner when Woody Griesbach leads off with a triple to left center! Dave Lesley grounds a hit past the shortstop and Griesbach scores. 3 to 1, Padres. Rollie Ferree bunts Lesley to 2nd.... really, Rollie? You bunt him to 2nd with 2 automatic outs on deck? Is that you or one of our coaches being stupid? Phil Parker swings at a 3-2 pitch and strikes out. Don Panighetti grounds a hit to right and Lesley scores. Shut up, Christy....just because it worked does not mean it still wasn't stupid.... Wait! Christy! I'm sorry, I didn't been for YOU to shut up! Come back!.... 3 to 2, Padres. Paul Bouvet lines out to short.

Phil Parker is pulled down and Gordon Saunderson (27-L) is sent up. He is chosen, in preference to Bob Draper, because he is a fly ball hitter and less likely to ground into a double play... He grounds into a 4-6-3 double play.... Lesley goes to 3rd. Now PH Bob Draper (23-L) is sent up there. He swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the Ninth:

Schottler grounds out to short and Jeff Austin grounds out to 1st, unassisted.

Bottom of the Thirteenth:

We are in Oakland to finish the regular season with 3 games over the weekend. They just won 2 of 3 here from Los Angeles. We are 13-2 against them on the season and won 2 of 3 the last time we were in the Coliseum, August 9-11. The Oaks are 11th in the PCL in scoring, 2 runs ahead of the Angels, with 3.42 runs per game (Portland is #5 with 4.25). They are last in HR with 89 and last in BA at .233. They are 5th in fewest runs allowed with 3.97 per game (Portland is #1 3.19). The 14 runs allowed to the Padres ended our hopes of finishing the season with fewer than 500 runs allowed.

Portland Beavers (101-58 .635 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Oakland Oaks (67-92 .421 34 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

POR: Bob Grigg (24-R 10-1 2.33) vs. OAK: Bob Stark (28-R 6-4 2.61)

Grigg has not allowed a run in his last 2 starts, but had to leave both with back troubles. He is supposed to be 100% now.

Stark is 0-2 in his last 3 starts. We have only faced him once and he pitched a 5 hit shutout...
